I did not know what quite to expect when I decided to partake in the volunteer/vacation program sponsored by tropical Adventures.Having travelled around the continent extensively, I made the decision to do my first on hand volunteer work in Costa Rica. I have been in this country twice in the past. Why then C.R. to do this activity? I feel safe, I love the people, the country and its beautiful surroundings. Where else can you find the most beautiful and hospitable people in the world? For this wonderful experience, never mind the group tours in Tortuguero, Arenal, Irazu, etc. Let’s talk about, how I truly feel as I am typing my testimonial about my experience in Puerto Viejo, specifically teaching at Cocles Elementary School and getting to know the teachers, students and my new friend and ... read more

A while ago Isaac Garcia, one of the directors of Tropical Adventures asked me if I wanted to join him on a trip to the projects in Puerto Viejo and Bambu. The main reason for this trip was to inform the people in Bambu about the Children Incorporated project in a town meeting. After the terrible flooding in November 2008 and February 2009 Tropical Adventures has formed a partnership with Children Inc. to create a farmer’s market for the community. Off course my answer was yes straight away. So Thursday morning a little bit later as planned (but hey that’s Costa Rica) we left the office. After picking up Harold a friend and a visit to the grocery store we headed south. As we were getting closer to Puerto Viejo we could see a lot of ... read more

Panama City speaking!! Tidenes lengste koe moette oss. Saa daa ... read more

Puerto Viajo - feb 20 Recap. Went up the volcano Irazu the day before yesterday. 3400 m!! Got a little altitude sick when trying to run up a 100 m trail. Do not jump into exercise at that altitude!! lol. It was beautiful but boring. No trails to go on, etc. Just a long bus ride there and back and 20 bucks later... but i´m glad i went. Really beutiful vista. Yesterday popped onto a bus to Puerto Viajo, was suppose to stay somewhere but couldn´t get a hold of the person- some lady selling a farm on the internet?? long story, don´t ask... so we waddled around town with my 40lbs!!! grabbed a bear. got really dark. waddled around more. until we settled on a 5 dollar dorm. still there now. coming into the town ... read more

This is my first effort at blogging and I'll apologize for any inadvertent mistakes. It's really not so much a blog as a trip report, so, with that, I begin. We flew from Houston to San Jose, picked up a car from Budget, and drove to Casa Rio Blanco Eco-Lodge near Guapiles. This makes for a nice break from the San Jose-Puerto Viejo trip....about 2 hours from San Jose. Interesting factoid, we managed to get out of San Jose by driving through Heredia without going back into the City from the airport and it was fairly easy. No one seemed to be able to give us instructions, but we set the rented GPS (OK I'm a sissy) on Heredia until we got to where we could set it on Guapiles and avoided mucho mucho traffic. Casa ... read more

I'm sorry it has been awhile since my last post. Last week I didn't do anything to spectacular, mainly just classes and studying for my midterm. This week should have some interesting events, so stay tuned! Welcome party to Veritas On the 15th, Veritas, CEA, and the other international programs had a welcome party for all the students at the university. It was kind of odd that we had it the second week of school, but I guess the reason was the Tico students didn’t start till that week. We were all hoping for a decent barbeque, but it ended up being a small sausage wrap. So that was pretty disappointing. Everything in general was relatively boring until they brought in a small drum core and dancers. They were amazing. Some of the drummers even were ... read more

The best break on the Caribbean coast is right here, The "Salsa Brava"! As soon as i read this in my lonley planet, I decide that this has to be our next destination. I was on a mission to find some surf and Costa Rica certainlly didn't disappoint! We bused it to the very dodgy capital of Honduras then flew to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. We met up with Kev;s misuses (who flew from oz because they were missing each other 2 much, after only a couple of weeks!) We stayed a night then bused it to the east coast & the famous surf spot at Puerto Viejo (Salsa Brava). As soon as we dropped our bags off at J's, we went to scope out salsa brava. There were only a few lads ... read more
