It was supposed to rain this day, so we planned indoor things. Well, the good news is that it never did rain! We arose early and went for the free breakfast at the hotel. It was the same stuff everyday, but did not get old. I had the meats, cheeses, croissant, and coffee daily while we were there. We went to see the Haus des Meeres, which is a WWII Flak Tower, turned aquarium. Now for me, this was a triple crown winner! 1. It has historical significance. 2. The views from the top terrace are wonderful! 3. It is a very well done aquarium that recycled existing facilities. We really liked this place all around. I will say that it can get crowded and stuffy in there, but it was easy to let the crowds ... read more

Today we would meet an old friend of my wife's. They had not seen each other in more than 20 years. They had met while both lived in Japan. Since we would meet up with her near the Schonbrunn, we chose to explore there as well. She actually lives in Graz, but would be in Vienna to see her mother and daughter, so it would work out perfect. We arose early and went down to the free hotel breakfast. It was a decent spread, and was also very filling. I had some meats and cheeses, along with a croissant and coffee. We headed out about 8am to the palace. It does not cost anything to roam the grounds, so that is what we did until about 12:45pm. My favorite part was the Gloriette and the view ... read more

We arrived into Vienna at about 1:20pm and quickly went to get our taxi. I rarely use taxis, and prefer to use public transport. However, it would have been about 23 euro for us, and would have included a few transfers. We booked a taxi for just 30 euro, and were able to be taken to the hotel straight away. We quickly checked in to the Ibis Styles hotel, and then showered and changed. There was a U-Bahn stop just across from the hotel so we went out and took a ride to the city center. It was sunny and mid 60s for the temperature. Our first visit was to the Hard Rock Cafe. I only bought a pin there, and received credit for my visit. We then walked up to Stephansplatz and saw the St.Stephen's ... read more

Well, spring break 2016 gave us some trouble. We had planned on a trip to Buenos Aires. Unfortunately, everyone else did too. The flights became full early on. However, it is a good thing. We would have left on March 23, and the next day, Argentina would eliminate the $160 reciprocity fee for American Citizens. The full flights saved us $480!!! Our next plan was to go to Seoul. We had been, but just for a 24 hour stop over, and it was not even close to enough. We wanted to see more. The flight loads looked good, and I was sure they would hold, with all the threats coming from the neighbor to the North. They did not hold though, and about a week out, we had to make new plans. Now it was going ... read more

I have been wanting to see Brasilia for a very long time. You see, I love the modern architecture of this planned city that was only finished in 1960. That Architect was Oscar Niemeyer. The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our flights to Brasilia were always full, but then they upgraded the aircraft from a 757 to a 767. Yes!!! Now I would have a chance maybe? I had attempted to go on my own several times but it seemed to always be raining and the thought of walking around in the rain did not excite me. My wife and I had planned a little getaway for this week. Our daughter did not go, as she is in Florida with some friends. Of the places we had looked at going, this seemed to ... read more

I had wanted to visit Iceland for a very long time. We started a flight there 2 years ago, but it is always full. It had run from June 1 to September 1, which is peak season. In 2015, they started it on May 2. I knew that this would be a great opportunity to get a ride on it before the loads get full, and so the planning began. My family did not have any desire to go because of the cold weather. I generally do not like to travel without them anymore, but I could not pass this up. I watched the flight loads and they were holding up. I started to get some bookings made. I have become a big fan of Airbnb lately and looked there first. I did not find anything ... read more

It was time to go home. We did not get a good sleep because people were partying the 3 day weekend away for Semana Santa. We awoke at 3 am, got ready, and went down to the lobby for our ride. Our ride should have been there at 4 am. When 4:30 am came and he was still not there, we got ourselves a taxi. We negotiated the same price we would have paid for the other ride, so that was ok. With little traffic, we got to SCL airport quickly. We checked in for our GOL flight to Sao Paulo and went to the gate to wait. Delta has a nonstop from Santiagoto Atlanta, however, it was full in business class. Spoiled, I know. At just before 8 am, we were on GOL flight 7661, ... read more

We woke up pretty early and walked down to Santa Lucia metro station to meet Alexandra and her husband at 10 am. They were free until 1 pm, so we took the metro to the Quinta Normal station, where we would visit the park by that same name. The park is massive, and has many museums inside it. The entrance is nice too and you need to register before entering. I think that is to keep Vagrants out. The park reminded my very much of Gorky Park in Moscow. We strolled by the little lake with the boats in it and past a nice fountain too. Our first stop was the Museum of Science and Technology. It was about $2.00 to enter. Although I think it is outdated, it was still a good experience. We then ... read more

Alexandra and her husband were busy on this day, so we decided we would visit the zoo and ride the funicular to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. We awoke early, got ready and headed out to the metro. We rode it three stops to the Baquedano station. From there it was about a 15-20 minutes walk to the funicular. We had been in this same are the day before when we ate lunch with our friends at Shukran. We purchased our tickets for the funicular and got off on the first stop, which was for the zoo. The funicular does not stop at the zoo on the way down so that is why we chose this first. The zoo here is a real deal at around $3 per person. It is also very nice and ... read more

Today, Alexandra's husband had to work early, so we went to explore the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino. My wife had really wanted to see this and I am glad we did, because it was a nice museum. We saw all the exhibits in a couple of hours and learned a lot. We were meeting Alexandra and her husband for lunch at 2 pm. She knew we had been disappointed about the Doner House, so she suggested a place call Shukran, for some shawarma. This place was in the Bellavista area and was easy to find. The shawarma meal was huge and we could not finish it, but it was very good. The staff there were awesome too. After that great lunch, we walked around the neighborhood and decided to get some ice cream. We ... read more
