We awoke at about 10am and got ready. Checked out of the hotel and got a ride from the shuttle at noon. We could not check in for our flight until 2:45pm and it was only just afternoon, so we grabbed some snacks from Jamba Juice and sat around. ICN airport is a great place for just that! It has been voted one of the top airports in the world and I can see why. We had some lunch up in the food court area above the ticketing counters. It was Asian cuisine and was very good. After our lunch, we had some ice cream. When it was time to check in, we went over and were cleared for business class at the ticket counter. We went into the secure concourse about an hour before departure ... read more

Well, 72 hours sure does fly by fast! I am not ready to leave Beijing, but have to or be in trouble with Chinese Immigration officials. We arose from sleep at 4:30am in order to get ready and depart the hotel by 6am. We took a taxi to Capital Airport and it took about 30 minutes or so. Once there, we checked in for Air China flight 123. It was a quick process and so we went to the concourse. We had about an hour and thirty minutes until departure, so we did a little shopping. After that, we went to the Air China business class lounge. It was a very nice lounge and I wish we could have stayed there longer. They had rooms where you could sleep, a full hot buffet meal, a movie ... read more

We awoke early and went up for the great breakfast buffet again. After that, the girls went to the room while I went to see the Temple of Heaven. I do not know why they did not feel like going, but they really missed out. This was my favorite part of the trip. The park grounds are amazing and I enjoyed people watching while walking through to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. I spent two hours here admiring all of the beautiful structures. After my visit, I rode the subway back to the hotel and picked up the girls. We then went to Tiananmen Square and walked all over, before going into the Forbidden City. It is hard to believe what is behind the walls. There is so much to see and lots of ... read more

We awoke early and went for breakfast at our hotel. We had a free buffet with our room and it was good food. They had a great selection of both Chinese and western cuisine. After breakfast, we rode the subway to the Beijing North Rail station to get the train to the Badaling station at the Great Wall. It was a packed ride of about one hour, but still very comfortable. Once there, we all left the train and walked up the hill to the wall. We bought our tickets and went up on the wall. It was amazing! Some parts were very steep and so we had a little workout, lol! We stayed up on the wall until about 4pm and then went into the little tourist area for a late lunch at KFC. At ... read more

As the 14 hour flight continued, we were given another meal an hour before arriving and then our plane had to hold a short time for traffic. There was fog mixed in with the pollution and so it was real bad this day. It looked like a forest fire was burning. We cleared customs and immigration within an hour and then caught the express train into the city. It was about a 30 minute ride and then it was a few metro stops to our hotel, which was the Novotel Xin Qiao. After checking in, and then showering and changing clothes, we went out to eat. We ended up eating at the Beijing Hotel and having some local dishes. It was very good. After the dinner, we went to Tiananmen Square and walked around. There were ... read more

I had neglected Asia for so long now. It is so simple for us to jump over to Europe that it was easy to forget about Asia. I had only been to Tokyo and HK and the last time I was over there was in 2002. This needed to change. The day started out very early for us. I was off work on Friday night at 12:30am and went home to change and pack. I had only made our final plans just hours before. It came down to Venice or Beijing and I ended up picking Beijing. That is the fun of stand-by! You never know where you will go. China was actually not even in the picture until we found out that they have a new 72 hour visa-free policy. We also had to do ... read more

I awoke early at 6am in order to get showered and ready. The hostel only had two showers so I did not want to have to fight for one of them. It turns out it was too early though. I was all ready to go by 6:30am and I really did not need to leave until 8am. So, I just surfed the net for a bit and made sure my flight was on time. I checked out of the hostel just after 8am and headed for the metro. I rode on the green #2 line from Novokuznetskaya to Belorusskaya in order to get the Aeroexpress train back to SVO airport. I arrived at the airport at 9:35am and was checked in by 10am. This flight was wide open for stand-by travel so i was not concerned. ... read more

I awoke and saw it was still dark out so was not in a hurry to get up but did anyways since I thought I would get online while nobody was using the computer. I am glad I did because it was 7:30am. It did not become full daylight there until 9:30am. I quickly showered and dressed and then set out to explore again. I stopped at the Mcdonalds nearby for breakfast. I do not like to do that usually, but it is a fast and convenient eating option. After breakfast, I rode the metro from Tretyakovskaya to Oktyabrskaya and then walked down to Gorky Park. I walked inside all over the park for well over an hour. It was warmer today and there was a light snowfall so it was very peaceful. I really enjoyed ... read more

I had wanted to visit Moscow since my youth, I mean who wouldn't want to? The visa process always turned me off though, but I finally figured that it must not be too bad. People go all the time, so how difficult can it be? It was actually easier than I though it would be to get the visa and they have eased restrictions recently. They now even offer three year visas! I had planned to go in early Fall of 2012, but I had the business of life come up. I was then going to wait until Spring and bring my family with me. They told me they had no desire to go, but said I could go if I wanted to. I could not wait and so I braved the cold winter and put ... read more

Time to go! Our flight was not until 1:50pm, so we slept in and I figured if we left the hotel at 10am, we would be fine. We caught bus 23 back to the airport and it goes to terminal 1, so we had to get another shuttle to terminal 2, where our flight was departing from. We checked in and then had to wait at near the counter until they cleared the stand-by passengers. They said they would do it 1 hour before departure. I was not concerned because the flight was wide open, with over 100 empty coach seats and 20 empty business class seats. I was pretty sure that at least one of us or maybe even all three of us would be in coach because there were 32 stand-by listed and we ... read more
