Storm in Verona. It's a normal hot summer day. They had forecasted rain around 11 am. I was out buying fruit at 11:30 and the ladies said..... "Well they said 11, it's 11:30, it won't rain anymore." As I left I said, "I had better go before it starts to rain." They reassured me don't worry it won't rain. Around 1 the room began to get dark. I looked outside and the sky was dark blue with heavy clouds and it was moving fast. I raced up to the roof to get a better look. Yep... The storm is coming this way. In a matter of seconds the Ivey cold wind picked up and I took my last few photos and raced back downstairs. I was just a little scared. Then it started to rain it ... read more

One week later....... No luggage. What we know.... The suitcase left Nanjing and arrived in Guangzhou. Then it went on to France. From there we aren't too sure.... But, the suitcase is not in Venice. So where is it? Vacationing in Paris without me? Back to the suitcase. So I more or less decided to put all of my most important things into my luggage, so when I arrive I have everything that I need. A cross stitch to keep me occupied over the next few weeks. Clothing. Shoes. Makeup. Paperwork. Bits a pieces to start making jewelry and bags. Sheets for the bed. My YETI. Everything that I wanted with me is in that suitcase. Everything that would make my next few weeks easier to make the transition into Italian life easy. Everything else is ... read more

The day has finally arrived. Zero more sleeps. I had written a count down on the calendar much to my daughter disgust. She really didn't want to move. But the school is too expensive, so it's time to move on. Six years in Nanjing, China where finally up. Goodbyes are really odd. With some people you shed a tear but the fact is that once you have loved in a foreign country, as an expat you meet so many people and the world becomes a smaller place. We have started making plans to meet up with friends in Amsterdam and Germany and then we have friends that will be in Italy around Christmas. Sounds like fun times ahead. Now this flight to get out of China and start this new life hasn't been so smooth. Flights ... read more

So...... The packers have packed and gone. 10am until 6pm of pure stress and relief that everything has been packed and was on its way to the new life. But, I didn't recheck the cupboards....... big mistake. Left behind the printer and the pasta machine. The printing cartridges have gone but with no printer. And the pasta machine that I so needed but never used, but I suppose I am moving to Italy so who needs a pasta machine? Right? So a word of warning when you move.... check the cupboards, and then check them again. A friend is moving right now, as I am writing and I have just sent her a messages saying just that. Check, check and recheck. The following day I caught the fast train to Shanghai to bring the shipping list ... read more

Yes. One week until the packers arrive. By this time next week I will be elbows deep in boxes, tape and bubble wrap. When you are in the right frame of mind, it becomes easy to decide what you want to keep. Then there are other things that are too good to throw away so you give them to someone who will treasure it and appreciate it. Then there are things for the Ayi and the rest goes in the bin. Saying that....... It is usually then after the item has left your house that you say where is that thing I have been keeping all this time and now I actually need it? Now I have several lists around the house. Things to sell. Once they have sold who has brought them and when they ... read more

Its a rainy day and just perfect to be saying goodbye to friends. The mood is already gloomy and grey. Reflecting on good times spent in Nanjing. The craziness that we have experienced together in this amazing but crazy place. Looking forward to the future when we will meet again, somewhere in the real world and catching up on the good and bad times. Tears are shed and smiles are exchanged knowing that the important people..... you will meet again. Life is odd..... and then you become an expat and you experience an even more crazier world. Everyone experiences these changes very different.... but I know deep down the people that have touched your heart we will see again. Maybe it hurts too much to say goodbye? So its easier to pretend that it isn't happening ... read more

It's official. We have a home in Verona. Well a three bedroom apartment on the 5th floor with a huge roof top and a view. After 6 years in China it will great to be back in Europe and especially in Verona, Italy where I can understand what people are saying to me and reply. Not to forget the amazing food, wine and fresh air and the sun. China has been a rollercoaster for me. Starting in a very interesting but strange place. The language is very difficult. I thought I would pick it up easily .... so I thought. I already know 2 languages so surely I would pick up Chinese...... Wow. I was very wrong. Its all just a load of noise and sounds to me. One word could mean 5 different things depending ... read more
