After a mammoth 2 day journey we've arrived back in Bangkok and are spending a few days winding down before our flight home to Britain. The weather is living up to expectations for Thailands rainy season. One minute it's blue sky and sunny, next thing you know it's pouring down with rain. It's so warm though that you can carry on regardless in the knowledge that you'll dry up in no time. And of course it's not stopping us enjoying the peace and tranquility of our hotel pool. This hotel is becoming like our second home! This is the 4th time we've been here this year! We stopped overnight in Kuala Lumpur but didn't hang around as it is hotting up in readiness for the 50th anniversary of Independence, we managed to catch a firework display ... read more

By 3pm the next day, after a taxi ride and ferry, Sharon had her wish, we were on the beach on Tioman Island. We were a little disappointed at first as the beach itself was not too good. However, after a little exploration we soon discovered sandy beaches within a ten-minute walk along the jungle path. Better still, once in the sea, armed with Mask and snorkels we discovered the coral was much better than the guidebook had led us to believe. We spent the next 8 days lazing around on beaches, snorkelling in the sea, or taking boat trips around the island. Each evening we could be found at ‘Hello Bar’ watching the setting sun sink below the horizon, whilst sipping Tiger Beer.We found several restaurants serving good food, in particular one that pulled out ... read more

The guesthouse , Zeck Traveller's, we had planned to meet Sharon at in Kota Bahru turned out to be full. We had chosen it because the Lonely Planet guide book had said the owner was a mine of information and very helpful. He pointed us in the direction of a very expensive looking hotel 100 yards across the road. We decided to give it a try as we were anxious to get settled somewhere and then e-mail Sharon so she would know where we were. At that moment in time she was travelling on the overnight train from Bangkok (or at least we hoped she was!) To our suprise the hotel wasn't too expensive at all and it turned out that it had only opened that day and we were the very first customers.(Where was the ... read more

Time to move on. We caught our flight from Siem Reap to Kuala Lumpur but were gutted to realize we had landed in the ‘ Lo Cost Terminal as we’d flown with Air Asia. Our onward journey was four and a half hours away and there was nothing to do. In the international terminal we’d remembered seeing free internet access and had planned to use the time productively and update our travel blog. The only decent seats were in the café, how long can you make two cups of coffee last? After what seemed like forever we boarded our flight and 35 mins later we touched at Kota Bahru. By now it was approaching ten o clock so we were worried about getting a bed for the night. We jumped in a taxi and asked to ... read more

The torrential rain last night had created a small lake outside our bedroom window and the local frog population had moved in keeping us awake all night with their load croaking. During the morning the local children came to paddle in the filthy muddy water squealing with delight as they played. We visited the local market in Siem Reap to buy tomatoes and couldn't quite believe what we saw. In the oppresive heat and semi darkness were pigs heads, disgusting looking offal and chunks of fatty meat all crawling with flies. The smell was foul. Moving onto the vegetable section was not much better, most of the produce was in a worse state than stuff I throw away at home! Back in our room we struggled with a 2 inch pen knife to make cheese slice ... read more

Mon 30th July At 4.15am we left the hotel in search of coffee expecting to struggle at this ungodly hour. But no, Bangkok was already up and running. Tuk tuks, street cafes and backpackers all millimg around. The taxi driver we'd booked the evening before was ready and waiting with a huge grin on his face we told him he'd have to wait 'till 5 o clock, we weren't going anywhere untill we'd had coffee. By the time we were on our way to the airport the rain had begun to pour. Despite this he drove like a man on a mission reaching 140kms per hour whilst answering a phone call! Twice we asked him to slow down, on arrival at the airport we handed over the agreed 500 baht. Extortionate, as the journey had only ... read more

We are now back in Bangkok, the third time this year! We made the 20 minute walk to the pier on Ko Samet without becoming too dehydrated. The 9.30am boat was ready to sail, good timing! As we docked at Banphe the time was just on 10am, the time our bus was due to leave! By the time the boat had been tied up and we'd scrambled onto the pier over the two foot drop into the sea, we thought we'd missed it for sure. We managed to negotiate the hundreds of mopeds to cross the main road and there was our bus. The nice friendly driver waited for us to dash into the ticket office to pay. On taking our seats we were handed a bottle of water. Of course with water comes the need ... read more

A few weeks ago, Sharon, (our daughter) wrote a travel blog naming her perfect beaches around the world and asked for suggestions of others. We found our perfect beach on Ko Samet. Ao Nuan. Picture this! White powdery sand in a crescent shape bay that gently shelves into an aqua marine warm sea that's backed by dense jungle vegetation. Either side of the bay, rocks become coral as they reach beneath the water. Teems of colourful fish swim all around. When you tire of admiring the coral and fish, lay in the dappled shade of a palm tree and watch the huge colourful butterflies fluttering about. Eat lunch in the rustic little bar that’s hidden discreetly in the trees whilst watching the waves gently lap the shore. Perfect? We thought so. One of the downsides to ... read more

After a five hour taxi, bus and boat ride we were on Ko Samet. Shortly before we had arrived there'd been a heavy downpour and the 'roads' had turned to mud. We trekked to the village and found a vacant room at Naga Bungalows. After lunch we had a much needed dip in the sea, there was no sun but it was still very warm. The sea felt like getting into a warm bath! That night we came across a fire show at Ploy Bar, now we really knew we were back in Thailand. Sleep evaded us that night as our bungalow was so hot.The outside bathroom made life a bit difficult too. Every time we opened the door to go the Mossies got in! Next day we checked out some other bungalows at White Sands ... read more
