Why would you write a travelblog when you don’t actually travel anywhere? Last year we went to Thailand and spent the Christmas period walking through powdery white SAND. This year we stayed at home and spent a lot of our time walking through powdery white SNOW! It was such a change from the usual damp, cold Christmas's that we normally have that I decided to put some photos out there to let family and friends in warmer climates see what England has to offer. Christmas started early for us because Gary and Milena were off to Poland on the 22nd to spend time with Milena’s mum. So, the weekend before Christmas they came to us and we had a ‘mock’ Christmas. It felt exactly like Christmas day, we all sat around the tree in the morning ... read more

I didn't expect anything eventful would happen on our last day in bangkok. How wrong can you be? We woke up to the sound of heavy rain but by 10am everywhere was beginning to dry out. We had decided to check into a cheap guest house just for the day as we needed to vacate our hotel at midday and weren't due to leave by taxi for the airport until 10.30pm. That's a long time to walk the streets. The sun never really showed up all day but thankfully the rain held off. We showered and set off around 8.15pm for a last meal at our favourite restaurant. As a last minute thought I dashed back for my umbrella. When we got down to reception it was beginning to spit with rain and we debated whether ... read more

It's hard to say why we love this part of Bangkok but it somehow draws us to it like a magnet each time we are in the area. Maybe it's the chilled out bars along Soi Rambuttri where you can sit and 'people watch' or the delicious food you can buy so cheaply from the street traders. There's never any shortage of interesting travellers to exchange stories with and new places to find out about from them. And of course the beautiful warm evenings, well ok, I know it's rainy season right now but the rain soon dries up and life gets back to normal again. Not that it changes much, the locals seem to carry on regardless! By Saturday we were recovered from the long travel days and ready for some sightseeing. We booked ourselves ... read more

Asia » Burma August 25th 2009

On Tuesday morning we were up before dawn and waiting for our ‘taxi’ to take us to the port on Ko Phangan. He drove like a maniac up and down the steep hills and throwing us around bends. We had to tell him to slow down for fear of being thrown out of the back. Once at the port we grabbed a quick sandwich and boarded the ferry which thankfully left on time, 7am. Three hours later we arrived back on the mainland and were herded onto mini scruffy coach, three quarters of an hour later we were dropped off at a café and told to ‘sit down’. No idea how long for so we just grabbed a bottle of water and packet of biscuits as the old stomach was beginning to grumble by now. Soon ... read more

One problem of coming to the island immediately after full moon are the tides. Within two days of arriving the tide was so far out that the water was too shallow over the coral to be able to swim or snorkel until 5pm or even later. ( Of course someone out there reading this may tell us it’s nothing to do with the moon and it’s phases!) For this reason we went in search of something else to do. We climbed the steep road from our resort down onto the next bay from there we were able to walk several kilometres along the beach from bay to bay. It was impossible to get into the sea from any of the bays, just a few inches deep maybe. The bays were picturesque with gorgeous soft sand but ... read more

We have now left Malaysia behind and are on the Thai island of Ko Phangan. This island is famous for it’s full moon parties, half moon parties black moon parties - any excuse for a party to be honest. Fortunately we have found a really nice resort on the opposite side of the island to Hat Rin Beach where the parties take place. We are staying at a place called Had Yeo. It’s a bit more upmarket to the places we normally stay but as it’s low season prices are low. We have found a fantastic room with equally fantastic bathroom and large balcony. One of the best things is the fact that everything works! We even have spotlights on the ceiling with a dimmer switch. All this for 500 Baht a night (that’s about ... read more

I wasn’t looking forward to the next part of our journey. It involved getting the 11.30am boat off Kapas, then the public but to Terangannu followed by a bus to Kota Bharu, further north, where we would stay overnight (not one of my favourite places). From there, next day, we would need to get the public bus to Rantau Panjang on the Malay/ Thai. border. Walk across the border to Songai Kolok before taking a 10 hour train journey to Surat Thani. Another overnight stop, then make our way, by a series of buses and a ferry, to Koh Phanang, an island off the East coast of Thailand renowned for it's full moon parties. Sounds daunting but not so bad if you just take it day by day. In recent years there’s been a few terrorist ... read more

We walked down to the jetty before 7.30am to check out boats to Puala Besar. As it's a such a quiet island we were told we'd need to charter a boat meaning finding other people to share the cost or paying a huge amount. But that day our luck was in! A large fery was going over at 8.30am to collect about one hundred guests fron D'Coconut Resort on the island so we were able to hitch a ride. We had the whole ferry to ourselves! Once on the island we checked out a couple of resort options ranging from the absolute pits to luxurious. The cheap one didn't look too bad from the outside but it was up a rickety flight of steps to a dark room with 4 or 5 mouldy mattresses strewn around ... read more

We arrived at the dreaded Puda Raya Bus Station in good time for our 9am bus to Mersing. 'Dreaded' because it is mega crowded, very dirty,so noisy you can't hear yourself think and scores of buses spewing out hot air making the temperature hotter than hell! Suprise suprise, our bus was delayed an hour. Thankfully when we finally dropped our weary bones into our allocated seat we discovered they were actually quite spacious and comfortable unlike the buses in Indonesia where we were squashed 5 people onto 4 seats that were broken, lost all their stuffing, hot and stuffy with people all around you chain smoking! We plugged ourselves into our I Pods and settled down for the 6 hour journey to the East Coast. Quite soon after leaving Kuala Lumpur we were driving through picturesque ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sulawesi » Bunaken National Park July 30th 2009

We decided to leave Bunaken and see what else Sulawesi had to offer. We spent Monday in Manado on the mainland, which was a nightmare, dirty, noisy, traffic everywhere and road signs that were impossible to follow! We managed to do the essentials like Internet and buying eardrops, which we were both in need of badly. None of the hotels ,within our budget had a shower, instead they had a 'mandi' which is basically a tank in the corner of the bathroom that's filled from a cold tap then the idea is that the water can be used, by means of a scoop, to either flush the toilet or pour over your body in an attempt to wash yourself, there's no outlet for the water so it sits in the bottom going stagnant, nice! Oh well, ... read more
