Asia » Indonesia » Flores » Rinca August 13th 2008

You cannot come to this part of Indonesia and not go to see the famous Komodo Dragons. This is the only part of the world that they exist and so they are quite rare. The boat ride to the island of Rinca was two hours long. There were no seats in the boat just the floor or the edge of the boat to sit on, fortunately there were only four of us so we were able to spread out, lie down ect. The sea was as calm as a millpond luckily for us as this part of the world is known for it’s treacherous seas. Once again, just like when we were leaving Kapas a large pod of dolphins came to entertain us on our journey. When we arrived on the island we were met by ... read more

The boat to Serayu left at 1.30.pm and took about an hour. As we got about 150 metres from shore we pulled up alongside a tiny little boat that looked like more like a hollowed out log, it had 6 inches of water in the bottom, this was our transport to the shore. The boatman bailed out the water and put down a few planks then loaded 4 backpacks on plus Stan and myself, leaving the other four passengers behind. He then began to paddle with his hands then he spotted my flip flops and said “Marm?” took them off my feet and began to use them to paddle us into shore! The accommodation was just as basic the bathroom had no roof, a toilet with no flush or seat, no shower just a cold water ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Flores » Moni August 9th 2008

Moni is near the centre of Flores and we needed to get to Labuanbajo over 400 km on the west coast. The Island of Flores is one huge range of mountains and volcanoes with just one major road crossing the island which, in parts, is in a terrible condition as it constantly twists and turns up and down and around hairpin bends. The complete journey is estimated to take 19 hours if driven non-stop. We had planned to break it up over 2 or 3 days. For much of the time the road is lined with houses precariously built out on stilts over the slopes. There is virtually no flat land anywhere. As we drove along we got a complete insight into the way of life out here, women washing in the river (clothes and themselves), ... read more

The 56 seater turbo propelled aircraft bumped down onto the runway at Ende airport. The two hour flight had been amazing. We had never reached an altitude above 17,000 feet so we had been able to see down to the ground the whole time. Hundreds of tiny islands fringed with white sand beaches and as we flew over Flores a multitude of volcanoes, one which was smoking from it's flanks. After collecting our luggage from the completely chaotic system we emerged from the tiny airport to be met by the taxi touts quoting us rediculous prices to get to Moni, a tiny village high in the mountains which was to be our starting point next day the the summit of Kelimutu volcano. We joined up with a young couple from Slovenia, Tomaz and Simona, plus an ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Sanur August 6th 2008

It's three years ago since we were here for Sharon and Scott's wedding. We always promised ourselves we'd be back one day. Well 24 hours after leaving Puala Kapas (including an overnight stop in Kuala Lumpur) we finally made it back to Bali. We went straight to the hotel Lumbung Sari, in Legian where we'd stayed after the wedding. We'd remembered that it was nice there and was close to the airport and so convenient for arranging our forthcoming travel plans. After a week of island life it was a bit of a culture shock, mopeds and cars constantly tooting their horns all around you and the pestering of street traders saying, "come and look, very cheap prices for you" Our hotel, however, was set back from the main road and so blissfully peaceful. 3 days ... read more

When we booked our tour to Tiger Temple we were told "don't wear pink, red or orange as it upsets the tigers!" We set off on the road at 7am and arrived at the bridge over the River Kwai 3 hours later, we'd spent the time travelling exchanging travel stories with Aiden from Ireland who was 1 month into his 12 month world tour. As we walked along the bridge who should we bump into? Chris a teacher from work! Half way round the world and we still managed to meet up! A quick lunch followed by a trip to a waterfall then Tiger Temple, The reason the tigers are so calm here is because the monks have hand raised them from cubs so they have no fear of humans and are not disturbed by people ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok July 22nd 2008

Once again we have returned to Bangkok, it seems to be becoming the starting place for most of our adventures. This is now the 5th time we've been here and it is beginning to feel as familiar as home. We almost arrived a day late as when we got to the check in desk in Manchester we were asked if we would consider giving up our seats on the flight as it was overbooked. In return we would be put up in a 5 * hotel with evening meal and breakfast and then get the 10am flight next day, the sweetener was that we would each receive 475 pounds each. We instantly thought 'yes!' what were a few hours anyway when you're there for 6 weeks? Unfortunately as we hung around they then said there were ... read more

After spending a pleasant day on Railay Beach it was time to get back to Bangkok for our flight home on the 16th Railay Beach is a complete contrast to the deserted Sunset Beach on Kradan. Vendors trying to sell us clothing, sarongs, Jewellery and all manner of food and drink. People everywhere all trying to sit under the patches of shade that were growing ever smaller as the sun climbed higher and higher in the sky. We bought Pad Thai that was cooked on a Longtail Boat before taking our last dip in the sea and drinking in the amazing scenery for the last time. Despite the abundance of people Railay is still a spectacular area, high cliffs jutting straight up from the sea and dramatic rock formations everywhere. We showered in Sharon and Scott's ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand February 15th 2008

After experiencing the party island for 8 days it was time to experience the Robinson Crusoe Feelng. We boarded the 3 hour ferry Had Yao, from there we charted a longtail boat to Ko Kradan, this took almost an hour but fortunately the sea was flat so we arrived nice and dry. After a 5 minute trek along a dusty path we arrived at 'Paradise Lost' a collection of thatched huts set in a clearing in the jungle interior of the island. The owner, Wally, had about 8 dogs who formed a welcoming committee, well we had been warned by Sharon and Scott! There was only one hut left for 500 baht available so Stan and I agreed to take the luxury one at 1200 baht but only after knocking the price down to 1000 baht. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lipe February 4th 2008

After several months of dreary weather in good old Britain we are on the road again. This time we are catching up with Sharon and Scott on Ko Lipe, Thailand. Reputed to be the nearest thing to a deserted tropical island. The big down side to this island is the time it takes to get here. 16 hours on a plane, (well 2 planes to be exact) 4 hours wait in Bangkok Airport, 2 hours on another plane to the south of Thailand, taxi ride to Hat Yai then a 2 1/2 bus ride to the port of Pak Bara. All this followed by a 4 hour ferry ride. Last but not least transfer in mid-sea onto a longtail boat to drop us onto the beach as there is no jetty on Ko Lipe. Hopefully it ... read more
