What would you most hate to do when the forcast is for 10 days continuous rain? Go camping!! That's what we had planned - 2 weeks camping in Cornwall. Sorry people in Cornwall, you have a beautiful county but who wants to sit under canvas watching the rain pour down and tripping across a wet field to answer a call of nature? We were all set to go but on seeing the forcast we searched through the internet, got a late booking to somewhere guaranteed to be hot and sunny. Turkey, well Side, to be exact. (Prounounced Seeday) 24 hours later we were sitting on a plane winging our way to bluer skies. The hotel turned out to be a bit basic but at least it was somewhere to rest your weary head after a hard ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cumbria » Lake District August 12th 2006

Although we live in England we don't always appreciate the things so close to home. Dave, my brother and partner Claire came for a visit from Australia and we showed them the local sites. First we went to my favourite place, The Lake District, Cumbria. First stop, Ambleside to see the famous bridge house where a family of about 8 lived and the man of the house also conducted his carpentry business of making chairs. Next stop we drove over the mountains from Grassmere to the Langdales, one of my favourite places, the views are amazing without having to climb the mountains on foot which was fine considering we had my 79 year old mum with us and I was recovering from a foot operation. We ended the day by visiting Tarn Howes, a favourite haunt ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Gwynedd » Snowdon July 2nd 2006

The last weekend before my dreaded foot operation was forcast to be hot and sunny. Not wishing to waste a moment we decided to shoot of to Snowdonia on Friday afternoon for the weekend. As soon as we'd set up camp we set off for a short walk. The road near the campsite gives good views of Mount Snowdon and was ideal for a late afternoon walk. Saturday dawned hot and sunny so we headed off to the beach on Angelsea figuring that we could chill out on the beach and do some serious walking on Sunday. We were first on the beach as it's a long walk through thr forest to get there, but before long others began to arrive, then the boats turned up and dropped their passengers and before too long the beach ... read more

We were suddenly blessed with a few unexpected days off work. As the weather was gorgeous at the time we decided not to waste it but to go camping in our favourite place, The Lake District. As usual we headed for Castlerigg, Keswick. The campsite we've been going to for the last 20 years or more. We spent the whole 4 days climbing the fells and relaxing at the campsite. The weather was perfect and as it was June we had daylight until almost eleven o clock each day so no worries about getting lost on the fells. The photos show the mountains we climbed.... read more

We stood in the lobby of our luxurious hotel in Kuala Lumpur waiting to be picked up for the trip to take in the sights of K.L. After a brief stopover on a beautiful tropical island and 10 days exploring a tiny corner of Australia, it was now time to whiz around the city. We had arrived early in the morning, too early to check into our room, so, after 9 hours of flying and one and a half hours coach travel, we found ourselves waiting to squeeze onto a minibus full of other like minded travellers. The tour began by driving us past all the Foreign Embassies, given the political climate at the moment I was glad when that bit was over. The promised rubber plantation turned out to be a solitary rubber tree at ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » Mt Dandenong February 24th 2006

After our short break in ”Paradise” we landed in Melbourne, Australia, and were greeted with horrendous queues to get through customs. Two hours and a bit of queue jumping later, we met up with Duncan (June's son) who took us to June’s house in the Dandenong Mountains. The skies were grey as we drove through the suburbs and it felt very much like we'd returned to England. Fortunately it was just a blip and the weather went on to improve immensely. During our time here we spent most evenings sipping a cold beer and talking with June, Chris and Janet (June's daughter.) In between hospital visits our days were filled with walks in the nearby forest listening to the strange noise of the kookaburras and searching in vain for Lyre Birds. One day Melanie and Pud ... read more

We had a trip planned to visit Stan's sister and brother in law in Melbourne Australia who were both very ill. The thoughts of a 24 hour flight filled me with dread so we came up with the idea of having a one night stop over to break the journey. I was told by the airline that we could chose from several locations around Kuala Lumpur. I requested the tropical island of Langkawi and much to our delight it was possible even though it involved a 50 minute flight to get there from K.L. at no extra cost. Amazing! I e-mailed Sharon with the news and she arranged to meet us there as her and Scott would be quite close by in Thailand at the time. This was getting even better! Well, this travelling gets addictive! We'd only been home a few weeks from Bali when we both found ourselves with a weeks holiday from work. Couldn't stand the thought of England's grey skies so booked a flight to Turkey. We ended up in Marmaris, it was fairly quiet as it was the end of the season. The weather was a pleasant 25 degrees by day, a bit cool in the evening. We did plenty of running around on the dolmus buses, visiting Icmeler and Turunc. Both were lovely small towns backed by high mountains. On our last day we visited the famous rock tombs of Dalyan and also the supposed healing mud baths close by. This turned out to be quite a fun affair, although I have to admit that I declined from completly submerge myself ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Gunung Agung September 10th 2005

We had three days left of our Bali trip. The first day was spent chilling out in Villa Shanti, the relatively luxury hotel Sharon had picked out for the two days around the wedding. Some of the guests went back to Dreamland, but it turned out the waves were even bigger than 2 days ago and even experienced surfers were not allowed in the water. I was glad I'd opted for the calm of the hotel pool! The following day we moved acommodation to Legian, near Kuta. However we were not too happy with the place so made plans to climb the Volcano, Mount Batur the following day, which was also our last day. In order to get to the summit before the heat of the day we needed to leave Legian at 5am. This was ... read more

Before the wedding of course came the Stag / Hen night in Kuta. It had been decided that the hen and stag party would be combined as all the guests had travelled a long way and wanted to stay together. It began with a meal at La Cabana Restaurant in Kuta. After the meal we all wandered around until we came across a nice quiet bar. Not for long! The barmen looked so bewildered when over 25 people arrived all at once, that Michelle from New Zealand joined in making cocktails! No-one knew who owed what but it all got sorted out somehow. The day of 'recovery' before the wedding was spent at Dreamland Beach where I nearly got washed away! The sea had turned VERY rough and made it extremly difficult to get out ... read more
