By the time you get to read this blog, after many months of preparation and planning, we will be in Bangkok. The starting place for our adventure. This is going to be a whole new experience, we have backpacked for three weeks before but had Sharon, Scott and Gary with us to guide us through the tricky moments, now we have six weeks to fend for ourselves, with the minimum amount of clothing possible (less than I take for a weekend back home!) but armed with numerous guide books and a wealth of tales of experiences passed onto us by our chidren!! They both did it for a year or more so surely we'll manage six weeks, won't we? Well at least that's what we told ourselves but then Sharon went and announced that her ... read more

With a few days off work, we packed up the tent, filled the car with petrol and set off to spend a few days in Wales. Anglesey to be exact. The forcast was not good but being an island, Anglesey is supposed to be blessed with better weather (or so we are told!) Wendy and Alan had rented a cottage there and as there was a campsite adjoining, it was a perfect set up. We arrived on Anglesey in record time due to the lack of comuter traffic but after driving up and down several lanes for 20 minutes or so we eventually found the campsite, 10 minutes after Wendy and Alan had gone out for the day. Good start! The sun was shining but the wind was coming straight from the Arctic. How could ... read more

From the ferry we watched sadly as Phi Phi Island slowly dissappeared. Then we turned our thoughts to Bangkok, how much could we fit in, in one day? We arrived at Bangkok airport at 8.30 pm, after a short hopper flight from Krabi Town. the hotel we'd booked in at near the Koh San Road said they would keep our reservation until 10pm. Of course we hadn't anticipated how long the bags would take to come out. Bags retrieved, we bombed down to the meter taxi desk. We showed them the name and address of our hotel and they looked at each other and began laughing. We'd had it on good authority (our daughter) that this hotel was good! We were allocated a taxi, jumped in and sped off. The driver waited until we were on ... read more

In true backpacker style it was time to move on. We checked out of Andaman Legacy and walked to the sea front with our big backpacks on. Within seconds a Longtail boat owner accosted us, as we knew we would be. It was fine to trek across the rocks to Long Beach normally but not with our big backpacks on. Within minutes we speeding our way along the coast to the end of Long Beach where Phi Phi Hill resort was perched high up on the hill. The bungalows are reached by a wooden staircase that zig zags up the hill side (85 steps, I counted them, sado that I am!) Fortunately there was a primitive kind of pulley system that takes bags and supplies up to the top. We checked in, then after waiting for ... read more

Due to the muslim holiday the 9am ferry had been cancelled so the first ferry back from Ao Nang to Phi Phi was at midday. We were glad we'd secured accommodation there in advance. We were suprised as to how quiet the ferry was, as we sailed close to Phi Phi everything now seemed very familiar. We felt glad to be back. We checked back into Anderman Legacy without a hitch and were soon trekking over the rocks to Long Beach. I glanced at my watch several times and thought about poor Sharon and Scott sitting around in Airports. It makes a change though as it's usually us that have to leave some exotic place after a short time while they have months there! All the same it was sad. That night we ended up at ... read more

Saturday morning found us packed up and ready to roll again. Even though I was ultra ready and packed the night before, Sharon and Scott were ready first. Will I ever get the hang of it? I always seem to misplace something and have to unpack and repack! Oh well, practice makes perfect and Sharon has had years more experience than me when it comes to living out of a backpack! Anyway we had breakfast in Hippies Bar before heading off to the ferry to take us back to the mainland. Again Sharon and Scott way ahead as we still had to check out. Whilst doing so we secured a room for New Year's Eve as we'd decided to return to the island after saying goodbye to Sharon and Scott. As we arrived at the pier ... read more

On Wednesday Sharon and Scott were off extra early as they’d booked a diving trip, Stan and I however decided to slow down and actually stayed in bed until 10am. Once up, after a leisurely breakfast we made our way to Long Beach again. As we’d had a late start we stayed on the beach until almost 6 pm. By the time we got back to the bungalows Sharon and Scott had returned and were fast asleep. I decided to leave them in peace for a while. When Sharon woke up it had gone dark and she thought it was the middle of the night! The long sleep had done them good and we decided to hit the town tonight, after a meal we started off in Carlito’s Bar and watched their fire show but as ... read more

After a fun night watching a fire show at Carpe Diem bar we dragged ourselves out of bed early and set off in search of breakfast. We had planned to go to Rantee Beach so needed an early start before it became too hot. Sharon and Scott were surprised to see how much things had changed since last year. Some things had disappeared and others popped up. We ended up back near our hotel for breakfast as most places were still closed. Soon after we were climbing the hundreds of steps to the viewpoint, the views from up there were amazing and you could see how the Tsunami of 2 years ago had been so devastating. After the obligatory photo stop we set off down the other side of the hill to Rantee Beach. Once here ... read more

For the last few days, or weeks to be exact, everyone around me has been frantically shopping, baking and generally preparing for Christmas. What have I been doing? Sitting back and dreaming of far distant places, blue seas and sun kissed white sand beaches. Yes, at last, our long awaited dream was about to be fulfilled and just to make it even more perfect Sharon and Scott were going to join us on 'their island' of Ko Phi Phi, Thailand. We arrived at Krabi Airport after nearly 22 hours of travelling and marched outside expecting to be bombarded with taxi touts. Not one in sight! where were they when you needed one? It turned out the only option was to go back inside and queue up at the official desk and be prepared to pay the ... read more

After another day lazing on the beach we decided it was time to go and explore again. We chose Alanya as it was reputed to have a castle and good snorkelling. We jumped on the Dolmus bus outside our hotel and travelled to Manavgat where we needed to change buses to Alanya. We found the correct bus no problem and got on. We were extremely surprised to find that this bus was air-conditioned and quite plush, a big bonus! The ride took us all along the coast line for about 60 kms and lasted about one hour 20 minutes, very good value for 6 lire ( about £2 in our money)! The bay of Alanya was very picturesque, a pretty Port backed by high mountains and a castle overlooking the town. After grabbing a quick coffee ... read more
