We were all up early and went for a stroll along the beach after breakfast. Leaving Hotel Ray with our backpacks we were set upon by the taxi touts, as expected. We haggled and soon got one down to a reasonable price to take us to Bangsal, where we could get a boat to Gili Trawangen. Soon we were on the small overcrowded boat leaving Bangsal. Sat next to us were the 4 Belgian girls who'd been on the ferry yesterday. We wondered if they'd had the same problems with taxi drivers that we'd had. Once on Gili Trawangen we were met by Accomodation touts. This was becoming a way of life!We ignored them and settled in the nearest nice looking bar we came across. Stan and Sharon went in seach of acommodation whilst Gary, Scott ... read more

After months of anticipation and 26 hours of travelling we finally arrived on the tiny narrow road that was Poppies Lane, Kuta. As the 3 of us piled out of the taxi and began to wonder just where this 'Fat Yogi’s Bar' was, that we'd arranged to meet in, who should come wandering along? Sharon. It must have been part of the Woolley telepathy that she should come along at that precise moment. After hugs and kisses she took us to where Scott was waiting at Fat Yogi’s. We all downed a few welcome beers and tramped around Kuta for a while before jumping into a taxi to Bingin, near Dreamland. In the darkness our accommodation appeared to be in the middle of no-where. Leggies bungalows turned out to be a delight - even the huge ... read more

Stan, Myself and Gary were going to Bali to meet up with Sharon and Scott, who were on a 9 month backpacking trip. During this trip they were going to, at last, have the wedding they'd dreamed of for the last 3 years. We'd never actually backpacked before so this was going to be a whole new experience. Originally the wedding was going to take place on Phi Phi Island, Thailand December 2005. However the invitations were designed and ready to post out when the dreadful Tsunami occurred December 26th 2004. The island was hit badly and was virtually washed out. In view of this Sharon and Scott quickly changed the venue to Bali. The date was also brought forward to coincide with the dry season in Indonesia. One of the reasons The Far East had ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Sinai June 4th 2005

At last, after 18 months we've returned to one of my favourite places, The Red Sea. Sharm el Sheik, to be exact. We were a bit apprehensive as sometimes a return visit doesn't live up to your memories of a place. We needn't have worried, our hotel was even better than the last one we stayed in and more importantly the hotel's beach was fantastic. One of the problems of Sharm is that most beaches are private so you're stuck with the one your hotel has to offer. Set in a part of Shark Bay our beach was uncrowded, sandy and the coral was absolutly amazing!! Just a short 'glide' through the shallow water over a layer of relativly dead coral and you came to the edge of a steep drop where the sea turned a ... read more

Where can you go at the end of October to escape Britains rainy cold climate? Answer - Sinai Peninnsular. Due to Stan's new job he didn't manage to get time off until the last week of October. In desperate need of some sunshine we decided on Egypt as it boasted 'guaranteed sunshine'.We were not dissapointed, we stepped on the plane leaving temperatures of 10 degrees c. and got off to temperatures of 40 degrees c. Brilliant! Stan persuaded me to buy a mask and snorkel. A bit apprehensive (I hate putting my head under the water- yes I know I'm a wimp!) I overcame my fear and tried it. Wow! How could I have got to this age and not discovered the whole new world under the sea? I began by standing in the sea and ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas April 30th 2003

Stradling the border from East California to Western Nevada is Death Valley. Reputed to have recorded the second highest temperature on Earth ever. (not sure if that little piece of info has been beaten in recent years, what with global warming) Anyway as we drove thru' it, it definately was not that hot, the wind that had followed us all around was still with us making feel decidedly chilly some of the time but then it was only April. As we drove through, the rock formations were forever changing shape and colour and had to be seen to be believed, at times they gave way to huge sand dunes that seemed to appear out of no-where. We visited several well known sites including 'Artist Pallate', an array of fantastic coloured rock that appeared to be swirling ... read more

Stan, Gary and I arrived in L.A. Airport late on Sunday night after an 11 hour flight. Sharon and Scott were waiting for us at the airport and soon whisked us off to their 'cave-like' appartment in Goleta, just outside Santa Barbara. We spent a couple of days recovering from jet lag, exploring locally and visiting Tom and Wanda, Scott's parents. On Thursday Sharon took time off work and we hired a car to see what else California had to offer. It felt like old times with the 4 of us together again at last. First we visited Saddleback Butt National Park, it was drab, dry and windswept. Nothing much to write home about. We quickly moved on arriving in the town of Mojave, slap bang in the middle of the Mojave desert, as the desert ... read more
