Geo: 16.392, 103.924Wake at 03:00 to watch Wolves 0v2 Chelsea. This is followed by Huddersfield v Man City but I cant face two games at this time in the morning.Into Phon Thong after breakfast for a cracking game of rugby;Gloucs 31v23 Saracens ... well done all concerned. It is already a hot one as I bike back to Khamnadie. Getting back to the house I find Jai making a pudding. I cant get the message across that we are eating too much sweet stuff and need to cut back.'Army' beans are doing well now.The last couple of years they have been developing the land around the village reservoir. There is now a paved footpath all the way round with pieces of gym kit at regular intervals ... cant imagine anyone here using these mind ! I have ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924It now looks as though Jai might be leaving this evening and not tomorrow. They have decided that as it is a long drive, about 380km, they will travel at night. Jai's brother Sai whose truck they are going in, has dodgy eyes and cant drive at night so now they are trying to find another driver. Planning and organising isnt a local strong point and I expect things to change a few more times yet.We bike into Phon Thong for the Saturday market. On the ride back we see a large snake crossing the road. I tend to assume that all snakes I see here could kill me so give them all a wide berth. I dont actually believe that many of them are that dangerous but I dont intend to get close ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924Watch Man Utd 3v0 St Etienne at 03:00.After breakfast I bike into Phon Thong for the internet. When I get back to the house Jai has had news that her youngest brother's wife is very sick and has been in hospital in the town of Loie for about 10 days. They used to live in Khamnadie but had problems with number 2 son who got on drugs and became violent. He is untouchable inasmuch as he now works for the police selling drugs that they confiscate from others ... allegedly !! On a number of occasions he threatened to kill his mum so they moved away. Not seen them for a couple of years. Plan sounds like a few of the family will go to visit her on Sunday. It is rumoured that the rice money ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924Watch Munich 5v1 Arsenal at 02:45; Arsenal were about as competitive as Gloucester had been on Saturday !! There is English footer on free to view Thai TV all the time at the moment as well as German, Spanish, Italian, and a selection of other games.Wan arrives mid-morning on foot. I had arranged to go and pick her up at 11:30 but she couldnt wait. When Wan comes to eat and Jai and her start their nattering the whisky/wine has to come out as well to help loosen their tongues - like they need any help !!A big lunch with a couple of drinks and then a lazy afternoon stretched out in the back garden whilst the nattering continues in the house.Jai's sister Begat comes round with a bunch of bananas off her farm ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924Right after breakfast I go for a haircut. She wasnt home so I went to get some petrol instead. On my way back my 'barber' called out to me to say she was free but I had just spent my money on petrol so had to go back to the house for some more first. Anyway, I finally got my haircut. Strangely the hole in the ozone layer of my hair on top of my head seems to be getting larger and it looks as though I am going to have to buy a farmers hat now to cover it up from the sun.Back at the house we have mains water so I give the veggies a good soak. We have a new bean just forming. It has green and brown flecked skin and ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924Today is Valentine's Day but more importantly for Jai the day she is due to get a second payment as compensation for the poor rice prices this year. I'll believe it when it has actually happened.Into Phon Thong for the internet. I couldnt watch the Gloucester game last time I was in and wish that I hadnt been able to watch it today either; 34v9 at Leicester and very poor.It was a glorious morning as I biked back to the village. This is definitely my favourite time of year over here and I wish it could be like this all the time. Fresh mornings but bright sunshine and usually warmed up to the 30s by late morning. No humidity and rarely, very rarely, any rain. Altogether, most pleasant. After dinner we go to visit friend ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924Today is a national holiday here to mark Maha Puja. Appaently the day when Buddha spoke to a 'spontaneously assembled' crowd of 1250 people. Wonder why Christian countries dont get a day off to mark the 'feeding of the 5000' ?We indulge in a coconut ball each with mid-morning coffee. I am sure that these dont really count against our self enforced cake deprivation !!I bike out to the farm in the afternoon to break up the day a bit. Sit looking across the rice fields for a while and not a soul in sight for miles. Really quiet as well apart from the noise of the wind which hasnt let up too much in days. I take back an old coconut for Jai to strip down for the husk. Definitely wont be anything ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924It is even windier here this morning and I am reduced to having my post breakfast coffee indoors for the first time since I got back.Well wrapped up I bike into Phon Thong for the internet. Bit early to watch the Gloucester game yet but find 5 mins highlights of Wales 16v21 England. It is a still a bit fresh when I bike back to the village but it is the winds that are the problem being dangerously strong.Jai was doing a bit more work with the orchid baskets this afternoon and ran out of coconut husks to wrap the roots in so had to break down the ones we acquired from a neighbour a few days back. We were told that these were no good for eating but when Jai opened one up there ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924Whilst it is definitely not down as low as 4-8 degrees we both agree that perhaps we dont need to bike into Phon Thong for the market this morning !!I cut up the last lot of tree bracnhes for Jai to make baskets after lunch. I have to go to the village shop and buy 1kg of nails as the baskets are getting through my supplies. The wind stays with us all day today and their is loads of dust in the air.Visit the village market in the evning where Jai buys some small doughie things called blah tong goh(SP) which I believe loosely translates as golden fish. We used to eat these almost every day for breakfast when we were in Chiangmai but dont see them in many other places. They are lovely and ... read more

Geo: 16.392, 103.924It is particularly cold this morning. TV forecasts that it could get as low as 4-8 degrees although I have never known it get quite that cold here so I doubt it.Jai repots some old orchids into the new baskets. Half way through she runs out of old coconut husks so, after asking (!), she nips over the fence and acquires some from next door. Whilst Jai is repotting I set about repairing the fence where they hang with the bamboo I brought from the farm a few days ago. Just about finished when the saw slips and takes a lump out of the end of my thumb. Probably could do with a stitch but have had unpleasant experiences at the hospital here so decide to leave it for a while and see. Jai ... read more
