Lorne to Torquay The weather forecast was 17 degrees and light rain for most of the day. Luckily it was wrong and after a cloudy start it became sunny and warm, showing off the great views of the Southern Ocean as we continued on our journey north east towards Torquay. We passed Split Lighthouse at Airey’s Inlet and on to Anglesey where we had some lunch at midday before seeing the resident kangaroos on the golf course. A long climb later and we were on Jarosite Road leading to Bells Beach where we took the Coastal Path giving us a lovely view of the surf coast and monstrous waves coming in. However many times I ride this path I still love the views and the peace of it. As we were about one kilometres from town ... read more

Kangaroo pie last night which was OK but a bit tough. Maybe a slower cooking required, or maybe they are a tough old breed. The weather a bit cooler today and cloudy. Quite a bit of rain overnight. First stop cafe for breakfast since hotel only does cereal and toast. OK but not the best for cyclists like us carrying out own house on our backs. Second bit of real Ozzie wildlife today when we spotted a Koala up in a tree at the roadside heading towards Kennett River. The first was a wallaby heading into the bush two days ago and Phil had one rush across the road in front if him on a fast descent yesterday, causing a bit of anxiety. The Koala was sitting in the crook of a branch of a gum ... read more

Great Ocean Road. Port Campbell. Great breakfast in Warrnambool this morning and then stocked up with emergency rations at Coles before heading out on quiet roads before joining GOR after 32km. Shortly before a cafe stop for light lunch/snack at Barrewarre. The weather is wonderful to us who have escaped a wet and windy UK and a snowed on Nebraska with full sun and a max of 32 degrees. As we got close to the coast again after 48km we were stunned by the beauty of the colour of the rocks and the many rock formations close to the coast which have become islands due to sea erosion. There was the Bay of Islands, London Bridge and the Arch to name just a few. Eventually we made Port Campbell after 70km and 330m of climbing and ... read more

Great Ocean Road Tour Feb 11 2016 After a good flight from Manchester with a 6.5hr flight to Abu Dhabi and 12.5 hrs to Melbourne behind us we arrived at our hotel 32 hours later. Two hours sleep in that time is hardly enough so after rebuilding my bike I fell into bed for a nap. Luckily I set my alarm for 6.15 and after 3 hrs it woke me with a jolt, which left me shaking and wanting more of the same. A Thai restaurant for dinner seemed the best choice since we felt it was good when we last visited nine years ago (no change of staff then). It was still as good, as as testified by us going again the following night. The bike build went well, only to be marred somewhat by ... read more

Majorca 3 We woke up today to an overcast sky and were expecting a poor day. However it was quite warm at 10 degrees when we set off on our bikes at 10 o'clock and the day improved as we made our way through Alcudia to Lluba for lunch. Again we encountered a large group of Team Sky riders going the opposite way and I thought I would take a photograph but with all the excitement all I took was a video of the Tarmac. I had to take a photo of a disused windmill instead. It was either that or another twisty gate. We passed along a very fertile plain which reminded me of Banks and Crossens near Southport growing potatoes, lettuce, beans and artichokes etc. We also passed some very variable ploughed land, some ... read more

Majorca 2 Saturday Jan 23 2016 Today was like a typical summers day in Lancashire with a high of 18 degrees and the sun burning my back at lunchtime in the square in Campanet. For the first time this week I took off my leg warmers and went into fingerless gloves and felt great. The first long climb, after leaving Port de Pollenca, was up the Col de Femenia at 515m and was a bit of a pull but we didn't push too hard to save our legs because there was not climbing to do to reach the cafe at the Coll de se Batalla. We did not stop since it was a bit early for lunch and it was full of posers on motorbikes. We chased down the hairpins to Caimari avoiding the stupid motorcyclists ... read more

Majorca January 2016 A week in Majorca in January is a nice choice when the Lancashire weather is doing its worst with cold, frost and rain. Majorca, which had rain three days before our arrival, greeted us with brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the mid teens. Nevertheless we needed long gloves and leggings, as you may expect in winter, but on several days we took off a layer and had fingerless gloves after our alfresco lunch in the town squares. The first three days found us doing a total of 150 miles heading out of Pollenca in the north of the island. Port de Pollenca is a nice seaside town with loads of excellent restaurants and cafes with shops selling everything you may need. Car and bike hire is a big thing here, as is selling ... read more

Sicily Day 14. Palermo The last day travelling from the Chiuso farmhouse to Palermo. The morning was grey and miserable as we woke up, but thankfully the washing was dry, but alas, my shoes were wet through. Having no newspaper I packed them with some spare dry clothes with the hope that they may extract some moisture during breakfast. The view from our door would have been glorious if the sun had been shining over the rocky outcrops, vineyards, olive groves and vegetable patches with the town of San Guiseppe Jato in the distance. However, this is our last day and our hope is for the rain to stop and for us to be left with a bright image of a beautiful countryside. We had a bit of drizzle during our ascent out of the valley ... read more

Sicily Day 12. Wed. 21 Oct 2015 On the road to La Chiusa The meal in the hotel last night was exceptional with three courses plus fruit for a sweet and a small shot of sweet white wine. The first antipasta course was enough for a meal in itself before we even looked at the others. Luckily we had time to make room for more and cram it in ready for the next day. The breakfast was also quite good with a good variety of breads, ham, cheese, cakes, cereals, yoghurt and fruit. Following some heavy rain overnight we awoke to a cloudy morning with a few sun spots visible and our washing of last night still wet through. Never mind, bag it up and hopefully get it dry tonight. Outside our hotel was a van ... read more
Mud and more mud

Europe October 21st 2015

Sicily Day 12. Wed. 21 Oct 2015 Breakfast was a non cyclist affair made up of cakes, juice and coffee. Not what you need to go off cycling up the hills of Sicily. As soon as we were about to go at 9am the heavens opened, big style, and we hurriedly donned wet gear to climb up the steep hill out of town against a torrent washing against our tyres. This disappeared down the large grids across the road which are real tyre catchers. It was on an off all morning and even the best clothing succumbed to the intensity. Luckily it was quite warm and so was not as bad a Lancashire rain. Of course there was the obligatory mud again, not as deep but was everywhere on an important route to Corleone. This made ... read more
