Day 7 Muroto to Kochi. 87k 30 ascent at 20kph Shorts and shirt all day in mid 20's C. Great stuff. We hugged the coast all day and saw scores of tall towers for the population to rush onto in case of tsunami. Shogo, one of our young guides, was the height of fashion this morning with his fancy socks, as shown in the photograph. The coast around Muroto, and all the way to Kochi, is quite rugged with rocks and dashing, rolling waves. we could not understand why it is so quiet and the hotels are relatively empty. We were told that later this month is the 10 day Beach Festival and everyone then goes out and the season starts. We have found ourselves lucky with the blossom ,which we saw a few days ago, ... read more

Day 6 Hiwasa to Muroto 79km and a few steep climbs. At the dinner last night we had a talk by Kenichi on the Buddhist Kaiku who started the Shikoku Pilgrimage and at the end I was presented with a white Pilgrim smock with ’Thank you Kaiku’ written on the back, in Japanese). What a nice gesture, and I am instructed to wear this all day on my bike. The rain had continued to lash down all night, beating against our widow overlookingi the ocean, which had a gap where it fitted the frame badly and continued to rattle forever. To make matters worse we had the fire alarm go off at quarter to one in the morning. We put on our Yukatas and went into the corridor only for it to stop, so off we ... read more

Japan Day 5. Tokushima to Hiwasa. 70km. Three cheers for Carradice capes. The heavens opened for business at 11 o'clock in Japanese fashion and got worse and worse as the day progressed. Not that we regret this trip to Japan as we still love it, despite the vagaries of the weather. Two years ago. Christine made the phrase, "I love Japan, I'll be back" and here she is with 15 others who have either been before, or will certainly return. Early on as we left Tokushima the day was cloudy but warm and dry. We rode through several pedestrian streets with no one around and no shops open, and later sawmills not working - is it a holiday? Easter Monday at home but not in a Buddhist country. We followed rivers for most of the day, ... read more

Japan Day 4 Koyasan to Shikoku Island 65km What a night. Sleeping on a 40mm mattress and a rock hard bean bag did nothing for my old body. I don't remember ever sleeping but I assume I must have done for a few short intervals. I awoke at 2am and walked the length of the Temple to the toilet only to see on of the old monks doing the same dressed in a cloak and puttees, which looked like bandages around his legs and funny white soft shoes on his feet. I thought I was in the Burmese jungle during WWll. I surfaced with puffy eyes, a stiff neck and a bad back ready for breakfast of good quality but not over generous portions. Luckily a Frenchman next to me was not enamoured with Japanese food ... read more

Japan Day 3 Sakurai to Koyasan. Stats, Ave speed 16kph, Ascent 1550m, Distance 73km - arrived at 4.15 Yesterday was easy on a relatively flat route. Today, by contrast, was fierce with over 1,500m of climbing but luckily in good weather again with a maximum of 27 degrees and sunny. Perfect for me. The day started by taking the 8am train to Sakourai and collecting our bikes there, having been transported by the van. Sauri, our young female guide, told us to get on the train on platform 1 and get off it at 8.29. Can you imagine that in the UK, predicting when a train will arrive to the minute? It was a very steady start passing quite a number of large sawmills and plenty of timber yards and timber merchants. The roads were relatively ... read more

Day2. Kyoto to Nara. 52k Sixteen on this popular tour with our top guide Ken and his helpers Saori and Shogu. It was great to be able to set off at 9.30, after setting our bikes up, in warm sunshine in shorts and shirt, with a light jacket for 2 Hrs only. Once out of the city on busy roads and pavements we hit the river and followed its course on cycleways for just about all of he say to Nara. The sky was blue with a slight headwind and we observed the small birds chirping merrily away and an egret standing in the river looking for a meal. The riverbank is quite fertile and was home to manny small farmers growing vegetables and loads of small tea plantations covered in black netting. There were also ... read more

Overal view of Ireland Trip 2016 I rushed around Ireland from Galway following the coast back up to Dublin in 12 cycling days. In hindsight it was a marathon and more time should have been allowed. Luckily the wind was mostly in my favour and I did get a few days when rain persisted at least half the day, which I suppose is inevitable in Ireland, especially on the West Coast. I stayed in hostels on about 5 nights, which are not the best places if you have had a hard day and want some sleep. I used them mostly because of the high cost of accommodation in Dublin and Galway. Costs could have been kept lower if I had had a travelling companion to share the costs of the double rooms I occupied. The west ... read more

Day 14 The last day and the sun is shining, but dew on the ground and a nip in the air demanding full gloves for first hour. A steady climb for 1 1/2 hrs up to Laragh where a brew and sausage rolls is called for at the fuel station cum store. There I used for the first time a new Nescafe coffee machine which asks you if you want more than one shot, takes the cup up into the machine and does a bit of spinning and grinding before presenting you with the perfect specimen. It was a good job I refuelled here because there was nowhere else all the way to Dublin. Day 13 Luck was with me again today. I seem to have the luck of the Irish. Last week as I was travelling south the prevailing wind was north west. This week As I travel north the wind is from the south west. I am sailing along. I had a good run through Wexford with the sun in my eyes as I crossed the river with some very nice views of the city. The coast road was undulating but only needed my 'granny' ring twice all morning. At Killmuckridge I stopped at a nice cafe where it appears they get a lot of cyclists since there was a pump and spare tubes in a box outside. I had the biggest scone ever with raspberry jam and cream. I will never lose weight. The sun continued to ... read more

Day 12 Set out this morning after a nice red sky had disappeared. This was a bad sign for rain, which according to the Met Office, was due at 12 o'clock. I followed the rugged coast road from Dungarvan through to Bonmahon which is on the Copper Coast Drive. This coastal area was the centre of copper mining in the 19th century and there were several steam pumping engines on the cliff tops bringing out the ore, which was then shipped across to Swansea in Wales. The business was short lived and they were abandoned around 1870 after 30 years of production. The coastal part of the town itself looks rather weary with several abandoned homes and businesses. Eventually I arrived at Tramore with a ferocious wind blowing off the sea and was looking at a ... read more
