Togi to Wajima Despite the thin (very) straw mattress and pillow made of cattle nuts I had a reasonable sleep on the floor. You may guess what we had for breakfast, yes you are correct - fish. To our delight the weather had changed, as predicted, and we had sun and temperatures rehanging from 17 23 degrees. Firstly we had a talk about the Shinto religion and how you enter the shrine and the rituals. Walk along the path to the shrine building on the edge not the centre. Ring the bell, bow, two claps, pray and finally bow twice before reversing out. Just north of the town of Togi is the longest bench in Japan, and possibly the world, where we were swamped by about 200 school children in their magnificent sailor suit uniforms. The ... read more

Kanazawa to Togi The news all cyclists dread. Rain and strong winds as we wake and as we look out at breakfast time things are swirling in the air. Stoke up with food the get the metabolism generating heat. Eventually we were off at 8.20 into the headwind, on the cycleway by the river, until we hit the sea. Joy, the wind is on our tail and the rain eases a little as we fly north along the coast. Passing by plastic litter and old small boats on the tidal line swept up by a violent sea. The cycle path was in very good condition with smooth Tarmac and concrete with the occasional sandbar across our way, which on one occasion brought Tim down who immediately got up before I had time to photograph him - ... read more

Kanazawa Monday 9 May 16 24 hours after leaving home we arrived in Osaka without hitch, apart from the plane being 20 minutes late due to a strong headwind. This caused a bit of a panic when we had to buy the train tickets to Kanazawa in an office with a big queue and four clerks who made a sloth look quick. We just got our tickets with no time to spare and rushed onto the train to Shin Osaka. Fortunately the train was late , although my previous faith in Japanese railways has now been irretrievably ruined as it was also late into Shin Osaka. Luckily again the connection to Kanazawa waited for us and we set off almost 10 minutes late. The plane landed through a misty grey sky with falling rain. Welcome to ... read more

Warburton Today set off with good intentions but ended in disarray due to reasons beyond our control. Seven of us set off to Flindets Station only to be told that the trains weren't running and had been taken over by buses. We went on the train to Parliament to be told that the buses were not able to take bikes. This meant another 10km ride on the busy road to Camberwell to catch a train to take us to Lilydale. We got there an hour late and after a quick lunch were off at 11.55am. I say we, meaning four of us since we set of with seven but lost three on the way. Don got a puncture on Bridge Rd and the three decided to give it a miss due to the lost time and ... read more

Return to Melbourne Fortunately the laughing ferry steward was off duty today. I don't think I could have endured another crossing with his dour face. We had a cheerful lady instead. The train was waiting for the ferry so Sugan caught it to meet friends in Melbourne in the afternoon. The rest of the group, 9 now from a full complement of 12, rode north to Frankston following the coast as much as possible, which took in a really pleasant boardwalks through the mangrove swamps for several miles. Unfortunately we got behind some pensioners on blunderbus bikes on the boardwalk for about a mile at such a steady pace I nearly fell over. There was no way to overtake without causing them to do a headstand in the swamp so I was on my best behaviour ... read more

I thought we were going to miss getting off the island. After a dreadful night with lack of sleep with a cooling fan whirring overhead and other noises in our four man bunkhouse we woke up to no power. No power included no water and so we packed our bags in semi darkness and could not get washed, or brush our teeth. Eventually Phil got the genny working and we hastily had our 7.15 breakfast before getting to the ferry disheveled at 07.55. The ferry was ten minutes late and we were met by Mr Grump, who could not make his mind up where the bikes and bags went. I think to make a smile he would have had to wear a mask. Upon arrival at Cowes we dropped out bags at the Tropicana and then ... read more

Sorrento and French Island Our injured rider came back from hospital last night just as we arrived at the Sorrento Beach Motel after our Itslian dinner. The dinner price was OK but the wine was $54 and $40 per bottle - extortion. As we approached the motel in darkness we saw the bus which had gone off its route to drop off Sugan and Joanne. What a great driver and he made no charge. Sugan was walking very badly with assistance and still unsteady and in pain, though with full memory again. The following day she was still unsteady and so we arranged a taxi to take her to Stony Point whilst we rode into Rye to buy her a new helmet. On to Balnarring for lunch and then to Stony Point to meet Sugan and ... read more

Day in Geelong and journey to Queenscliff. We can recommend the Palace of the Orient on Yarra for a Chinese banquet. Great food and wine with good service. Today we had typical Australian Victorian weather. Not too hot but warm with some sun in the morning and a little drizzle after lunch at the Old Customs House. We were due to have a helicopter flight around the town but low cloud and the drizzle put paid to that - shame. The helicopter was unavailable in the morning since it was doing a funeral? How do you do that? Tip them out of the door over the sea? Early evening at Paul’s house with the little boys then a meal in town at Parkers Steak House. Saturday morning turned out dull and coolish as we left for ... read more

Torquay to Geelong Moby’s for breakfast on the Esplanade. A bit of an eccentric place but serving excellent food. Porridge was with quinoa and laced with all sorts of touches including mint. Very tasty I believe. A nice run out if town along the beech front before taking the Horseshoe bend road towards Geelong. Straight as a die apart from, of course the horseshoe bend. After taking left and going on Boundary Road towards Waurn Ponds Station we were offered a bit of adventure in the form of a post and wire fence and locked gate ahead. This was just after the point where I was overtaken by a kangaroo 15 months ago. Never to be deterred we took off our panniers and hoofed our bikes over the fence and trotted across the bypass onto the ... read more
