Sicily Day 11. Tue. 20 Oct 2015 What a day that was. There are many things to see in Sicily of great archaeological importance and the motorists, including coach and HGV drivers are very polite and courteous. The old towns are quite classy and welcoming and prices are low compared to home, unless you go to the tourist places. However, it has many qualities that are less favourable. The roads are pretty appalling, even the major routes have subsidence problems and nil maintenance. Many country roads inland, apart from the decay, are covered in mud every few hundred metres, which are almost impossible to ride through on a bicycle, and it sticks to everything like glue. This is caused by overuse of the plough. Very steep hillsides are ploughed with crawler tractors right down to the ... read more

Cicily Day 10. Monday 19 Oct 2015 A bit of excitement to start the day. We got to the bus stop outside he hotel to go to the Archaeological Museum thinking it was one euro fare. As it happened or was 1.80 Euro and the driver had no change so it got a bit fraught with 6 of us trying to get enough change together and the women on the bus shouting with arms in the air, as only Italians do, that time was passing and they would be late for work. Great fun for us on reflection. The museum was absolutely full of artefacts with thousands of pots, vases, water vessels, lamps and stone sculptures etc etc. Plus some lead and gold coins of about 300BC. Amazing place. Eventually my back gave out and a ... read more

Cicily. Day 9. Sun 18 Oct Last night we had squid and octopus again for a starter, unfortunately the suckers kept attaching themselves to the roof of my mouth, which slowed the meal down somewhat. Otherwise it was a great meal with free wine, which went down rather better than the crawley bits and more so since Ben kept topping up my glass when I was not looking. This was preceded by a walk around the town of Sciacca and people watching. The harbour had maybe 30 or 40 fishing boats anchored which bring in tonnes of fish each day to the busy fish market. It is a bit of a climb up the steps to the main town centre where there are many churches with singing going on. When we reached the Basillica, The Church of ... read more

Cicily Day 8 Sat 17 Oct 2015. Sciacca Sunny and hot again in the mid 20's. The morning was spent in the archeological site of Selinunte, which is a 2,400 year old site of a Greek Acropolis or two and surrounding townships. I said Acropolis or two, there were actually two but what is the plural - is it Acropoli? We visited the quarry 18 km away yesterday, which produced all the stone. This must have been a colossal undertaking since many of the stones must weigh 20 tonnes or more and must have taken 10's of years in the process. The buildings over the 110 hectare site were never ever completed since they were eventually invaded in 416BC by Carthage and the site was then abandoned. The first Acropolis had been partly rebuilt and is ... read more

Sicily. Day 7. Friday. 16 Oct 2015. Marinella Today we are dashing, if that is what you could call 21 disparate cyclists on holiday, down to the Marsala archaeological museum to see what is reputedly the oldest warship in the world dating back to 240 BC. Getting this bus trundling in a morning, and even later in the day, is a major feat. Have you ever noticed how the slower, less confidant riders always set off last when the group rolls? "After you dear!", Meanwhile the peleton is disappearing out of site and they are then we'll and truly 'dropped'. When we got into town we found the remains of the warship to be impressive, it was originally 35m long and had 17 oars at each side and was built by the Carthaginians. The very few ... read more

Sicily. Day 6. Marsala It was a dull start today with damp roads after the ferocious thunder storm at 3am. The thunder rolled and then lightning lit up the sky almost continually for half an hour with very heavy rain. At least it rained at night, but unknown to me our bikes were left out in the courtyard uncovered and my precious Brooks leather saddle suffered somewhat. After a few stops for various riders to don jackets after discovering it was not as warm as they thought we arrived at the bottom of the 720 metre hill in the town of Trapani. We rode along the seafront and then wiggled around the town to get a feel of the place, which was quite ornate and antiquated. A compulsory coffee stop was had at a rather fashionable ... read more

Sicily Day 5. Erice We could have stayed a while in San Vito with its turquoise sea, lovely beach with soft sand and the warm breeze caressing our weary bodies. Alas it was not to be. We were whisked away up a nasty steep hill only to descend back into town and then climb up out of the valley on the road we scooted down with such gusto yesterday afternoon. I volunteered to be the back marker today and took charge of Bill, who was having a real struggle, not just with the wind but his energy levels and lack of fitness. Three of us surrounded him to act as a shield from the Scirocco, which was still making its presence felt, and reducing our forward motion to snail's pace. However, the time came when he ... read more

Sicily. Day 4 St Vito Sunny again today,as forecast and temperatures in the mid to high 20's. Great weather for October and a pleasure to be in Sicily with its great coastline. We set off up the hill we descended last night and had a tour of the town of Alcamo and its castle. Our first port of call was the 2,500 year old temple ruin at Segesta. This was built, when the town was inland, as a fortress against invaders but was never completed since times became more peaceful and the town was then built on the coast. Following this we had a nice long descent before our first puncture of the trip which was caused by glass. The rural roads make the Lancashire ones look good, many suffering from subsidence and lack of tarmacadam ... read more

Sicily Day 3. On the road to Alcamo Away at 9am after putting our bike bags into storage for two weeks. Down the narrow streets we went weaving our way to the coast and the harbour before making our way westwards following the coast for much of the day. We went in convoy, but not in one large group of 19, giving the traffic a chance to pass us. There should have been 21 but two of them have still not got their bikes, although they are at the airport now. The plan is for them to get their bikes built up in the morning before cycling in a straight line to the Hotel in Alcamo. We seemed to be in the built up area for quite a while before the roads became less busy, although ... read more

Sicily. Day 2. Free day In Palermo I awoke at 8am to my phone buzzing and chirping at me. Damn, why did I set that alarm? A continental breakfast with water in my cereal since no soya milk provided. Rest of it ok, just. Next job putting bikes together, which took until lunchtime helping others with the job of tyre pumping and setting up brakes etc. The rain stopped by lunch, which had hindered our bike testing. My left gear changer jammed at one point , which meant I had no gears on chain ring - a disaster. However it started to work after a bit if force was applied. Strange! Hope it is ok from now on. We then went for a stroll into town and lunch at a restaurant by a very ornate church ... read more
