Hamilton to Hobart After a very interesting stay at the Hamilton Hotel we set off on a cool but sunny morning. The meals at the hotel were very good and I had an excellent nights sleep, even though I kept banging my head on the sloping attic ceiling. We stored our bikes in a large shed at the rear, which had a bottling plant inside for water we were told. It was either filtered rainwater or moonshine. We could not be sure which. The hotel was full of old artefacts and of particular interest were two1945 maps of Tasmania showing the distribution of cattle, rainfall, fruit growing etc etc. We could not wait to climb the big 3 mile hill out of town (not) and were soon speeding down the valley seeing black swans, cormorants, buzzards ... read more

Miena to Hamilton We had a very good day today with a cold start at 7 degrees but ended at about 20deg and sunny. Very pleasant ride down to Bothwell and had wallaby pie and chips at the Devils Den Cafe for lunch. Along the way today we saw sheep farms on the high ground with beef cattle lower down with some massive South Devon Bulls around s small lake. The land is very brown and does not look very fertile but the livestock looks very healthy regardless. As we approached Hamilton we turned right on the A10 and dropped down a steep hill for 3 kilometres which must be climbed tomorrow morning on our way to Hobart. A mutiny could be on the cards tomorrow. When we eventually arrived at the Hamilton Hotel it was ... read more

After discussion with the Motel owner we decided to take the A5 to Miena since there was a short portion of the early minor road which was just dirt and we are already down for 20k along the lake this afternoon. Enough is enough and after all this is a holiday (you must be joking). Due to the reputation of the climb we got away at 8.10 and soon hit the A5 with little traffic on it. After about 5 miles we started to climb and headed up through a pleasant forest. About half way up the hill was a side road down to Liffey Falls, which 5 of us hardy souls took. We should have had more sense because it was a dirt road and quite steep when we came back up and the 5 ... read more

Tasmania Sheffield to Deloraine. 33 miles and 700 m of climbing. After a pleasant stay at the Sheffield Motor Inn we sped along Paradise Road until we hit a severe incline around Mount Roland, although it felt like we were going straight up it. As we passed through the trees on the hill of the Gog Forest we were surrounded by screeching White Cockatoos. An amazing descent followed to cross the River Mersey at the foot of the hill. Half way down I came across a French couple grinding their way up, who were spending two months cycling around Tasmania with all the camping gear. The going was nice and easy along the Meander Valley to Deloraine, where we first stopped at Mole Creek for some banana bread and coffee at the very pleasant Bozzey Cafe. ... read more

Yesterday we rode 56 miles from Penguin to Sheffield. Oh what a day! Hills, hills and more hills, relentlaess. We all got in like zombies with jelly legs. The mileage must se like chicken feed but it was up and down over several vallys and one hard piece, of perhaps 5k, on a dirt road. We rode down into Gunns Plains with a brief tail wind along a beautiful new piece of Tarmac, to visit the Wings Wildlife Park for a look around and lunch before the pain set in. We saw many species peculiar to the antipodes such as the Tasmanian Devil, koalas, wombats, wallabies and kangaroos etc. A very good park. Luckily it was a nice warm day at over 30 degrees in the shade but it took a lot of drinking water, which ... read more

Tasmania Day 1 We arrived in Melbourne airport without hitch but without significant sleep, as usual, despite the journey taking 30 hours since leaving home and another 6 hours to go before we arrive in Devonport, Tasmania. Alas I received a message from Valerie stating that she had been delayed an hour in Sydney since they would not allow her bike to be stowed in her plastic bag but had to be put in a box. She will have to catch the next flight in 4 hours and get a taxi to the motel. The plane to Tassy seems tiny compared to the A 380 double decker and I could almost touch both sides of the fuselage with arms outstretched. Valerie eventually arrived complete with bike. Another problem was that John H who had flown in ... read more

Yell Day 19 Signal Mountain to Jackson. Whow! What a way to finish this trip. Sunny and warm with a steady downhill run to Jackson with the majestic Teton Mountain Range on our right, changing their hue with every hour as the sun climbs in the sky. What a difference 16 days make to the aspen trees, which were green when we traversed this route last and now a rich yellow. It was so peaceful on the cycle track, which stretches from the top of Jenny Lake right into Jackson, a total distance of about 24 miles of smooth Tarmac. The only downside today was that about 6 miles of it was out of use due to work on lime painting and new kerbing. I defied the signs and carried on going along one stretch until ... read more

Yell Day 18. Lake Village to Signal Mountain. Overcast start to the day and onto short cycle path along the lake to the highway. Tony and Deborah saw a wolf on the shoreline path, a first this trip. Once on the highway there was a bull bison ambling along in the centre of the road in front of me. I had to wait for a car to arrive before I could pass. Apart from a bull elk with magnificent antlers bugling away later on this it was an uneventful day for me on the animal front. Bill had a lucky day he saw a woodpecker and in Jackson Lake a moose taking a dip. Some people have all the luck, or is he more observant? We rode over the Continental Divide and down a long descent ... read more

Yellowstone Day17. West Yellowstone to Lake Lodge. It was as well we went to the Running Bear Pancake House at 7am because people were pouring in to what is an excellent breakfast venue. The choice was good from the traditional egg, bacon, hash browns and toast to the delightful pancakes with boison or maple sauce. Great start for a day in the saddle. A half mile out of town and we were into Yellowstone Park again heading along the Madison River. This was a pleasant ride along fairly level terrain until we hit Madison Junction, where the climbing started and reached 8% at Gibbon Falls then varied up and down to over 2000 metres and to Norris Basin, where we had called two weeks ago. We seemed to be in better shape today, despite the hills, ... read more
