Cambodia Day 1 and 2 11/12Jan 2018 The first day was spent on the 13 hr flight to Singapore. Exciting stuff, wishing you are somewhere else with a stiff back and aching body desperate for a comfortable chair or bed. The run to the airport wasn’t a lot better since the traffic was horrendous making the journey 2hrs instead of the 1 hr when roads are clear. The lay off in Singapore was 5 1/2hr and then a short 2hr leg to Siem Reap, where we were met by our local guide leader Shanee. Things may have been a bit swifter if I had not managed to miss a digit off my passport number on my Visa application. Donkey. I just hope this is the only problem we get. However in Cambodia I presented it to ... read more

Day 15. Dublin. This was our last day and whilst not the most scenic was definitely tough. Setting off from Woodenbridge in the sun was quite good, although when we hit the shade the breeze was cool. We climbed steadily to Rathdrum and up through the town eventually arriving in Laragh where we had a drink and snack to keep up our strength for the climb ahead. Above Laragh there is a spectacular waterfall just before you leave the trees and enter the exposed part of the Wicklow Mountain. We met a nice Belgian lady who took our photograph and then teased off again. The wind was in our face and was quite strong and cold. An extra layer was required to keep warm and I wished I had put on my leg warmers. The route ... read more

Day 14 Woodenbridge. 90km This was the first day that I never used my wet weather gear - marvellous. Whilst we only did 90km it was not as easy a day as I had though it would be with 900m of climbing. No big hills but plenty of rolling stuff and I often wondered why I ever bothered to shift the chain onto the big ring. We sauntered through Wexford and then hit a headwind for a long way as we headed north just a kilometre or two from the coast. It improved as we took a minor road to Blackwater as we became shielded a little by the trees. The houses along this coast are generally much better with many newish ones and quite a few thatched ones on various states of repair. A number ... read more

Day 13 Wexford A great day cycling along the Copper Coast from Dungarvan where every corner delivered a fantastic view and a chance of a great photo. So progress was slow at times with Dunmahon Beach being good to see with the rollers coming on and the sandy beach plus the signs warning of drug smugglers landing illicit cargo and a warning to dog owners to pick up their nasty stuff. Further on we saw the remains of copper mining buildings with boiler houses and chimney. These were in use employing 1200 people until the 1880's but had their heyday in the early 19'th century. This coastline is not unlike Cornwall with its steep climbs and dramatic shores. Last night we had a good meal at the Moorings pub and restaurant in Dungarvan and a great ... read more

BDay 11. Dungarvan. 103 km Cork had to be navigated today to get on our way eastwards to Dungarvan. The city was busy at 9am and the N25 eastwards was not a place to ride a bike so we headed up into the hills before coming back down to the river at Glounthaune. Some thought this was unnecessary punishment to the legs and I might agree as mine suffered as well. However, a good night's sleep may make mutiny a less likely prospect. The land whilst not attractive, as in previous days, it was flatter and when we got to the deli in Midleton we felt more relaxed. Onwards to Youghal for lunch in a nice cafe on the Main Street by the clock tower, where we all seemed to meet up again. A quick look ... read more

Day 10. Carrigaline. 113km. One of our better days, especially if you like wading birds. After a dull start we headed east with a marvellous tail wind for just about all day. We passed the graveyard of many of the people who died of starvation during the 1845-50 potato famine at Skibbereen before heading on to Leap where we had our first cafe stop for coffee and scones with a guy who was rather inebriated halfway through the morning. A right turn here took us along a very pleasant coast with colourful boats moored at Glandore. We headed upwards again and inland through Lissavard to Clonakilty for lunch of ham salad sandwiches from the Centra supermarket eaten in a small park in glorious sunshine. Andrew had a bottom bracket problem so he found a bicycle shop ... read more

Day 9 Schull It looks like we may be heading for a wild day,but who knows. The rain has just eased off after hitting the windows for a while, but at least the wind will blow us along for some time until we turn the headland at Bantry. I would like another day like yesterday where we saw 3000 cyclists heading in the opposite direction on the Rebel Tour of Cork 160km sportive and where the sun was shining on all the boats in Castletownbere harbour at night. Maccarthys Bar was also good last night with the walls plastered with memorabilia and there was even a bacon slicer on the counter and posters everywhere such as the one I posted denying access to Thieves, Fakirs Rogues and Vagabonds. The morning continued overcast but luckily only a ... read more

Day 8. Castletownbera. 112km Nice night at the Smugglers Inn at Waterville despite the noisy golf party who ate after us in the restaurant and bellowed on way into the night. The weather was wild overnight and we had a bad forecast for today. However, it set off dull and dry and apart from one quick shower we had a great day with quite a bit of sun and enough wind on our backs to make us smile. We took our photos by the Charlie Chaplain statue in Waterville ,as we do by the Eric Morecambe statue in Morecambe. After the first big climb out of Waterville we had the greatest views ever of he coastline with its many rugged islands and had to stop many times. We had two large climbs before hitting Sneem for ... read more

Day 7 Ring of Kerry-Waterville. Whilst the forecast was for lots of rain this morning we got off lightly with blue sky and sun. Peter took us on a very scenic route back to Castlemaine, which was relatively flat luckily as one of our group was having problems. At Killorglin we stopped to take a photo of the statue of Puck the goat at the bridge. There is some folklore attached to this and each year a live goat is brought into town for three days and a local fair ensues with drinking and merriment until 3am. A coffe stop followed and yet another at Glenbeigh with sandwiches made at the fuel station/deli. I am always amazed at the great quality of the sandwiches they create for us. After lunch we dropped to the bay and ... read more

Day 6. Dingle. 110km Early start at 8 since poor forecast today. I have come to the conclusion that it rains Mondays and Thursdays in Ireland since it is exactly the same weather as when I did this tour last year. It rained on and off all day with odd appearances of the sun and I was not sure whether I should put on sun cream or goose grease. Whilst the wind was not quite as strong as yesterday it caused us to puff and blow all the way to Dingle. We dropped to the sea just before the start of the big climb and saw lots of wading birds such as herons, egrets, curlews and oyster catchers. The start of the climb saw some rain appear and whilst the climb of 7 percent is not too ... read more
