North America » United States » Indiana » Clarksville October 14th 2016

Last week I had the need for a break from the visiting professor gig, so I headed southwest for a small adventure. I drove through Ohio, Kentucky and finally arrived in Clarksville, Indiana to visit the Falls of the Ohio. This area is known for its collection of naturally exposed fossils that can be seen on the large rock that reaches out to and is covered by the Ohio river during the spring. This is actually a federally protected NWR - check it out here - http://www.fallsoftheohio.org/ The fossils are typically of the coral variety and are fairly easy to find as you walk out on the exposed rock. The interpretive center is fantastic - particularly the part about how the Lewis& Clark expedition left from the area. After checking out the fossils Brutus and I ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Anchorage August 18th 2016

This summer we were given this great opportunity to travel to Alaska for some adventure and much needed family time. Luckily I had some summer time that I could devote to a little adventure before my big move to the Midwest for a new job. We flew into Anchorage and hit the road in our chariot (read RV), stopping to gawk at the amazing beauty of the glaciers, wild berries and scenery. In Seward we split so that half of us could go Halibut fishing and the other half of us visited the incredible aquarium in town, walked the shops and got some killer clam chowder. After this adventure we then hitched a ride on a Kenai fjords trip where we took in sights including puffins, sea otters (my favorite) and for a lucky few, a ... read more

Today we visited California Adventureland - the next door neighbor to Disneyland, and it was fantastic! Loved it so much. We saw several street shows, was able to rub elbows with Pluto and Oswald (the original lucky rabbit drawn by Disney), visited Cars Land, ate some amazing sourdough bread bowls at the Pacific Wharf and chilled on a massive ferris wheel ride. It was fantastic! We have been super lucky in that the weather has been overcast, the lines short and the food great. I actually enjoyed it more than Disneyland, though I think you just have to go to Disney! And remember.."it all began with a mouse"...... read more

Graduation time came and went, and in order to celebrate this milestone I have had the great opportunity to go to Disneyland! A childhood and adulthood dream come true! On the way we stopped and visited the Seven Magic Mountains "art" collection of rocks, the beautiful desert, a tortoise and the world famous Baker thermometer. Disneyland has proven to be much more and much different than I had imagined. We went on several rides including the storybook canal, It's a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean, Winnie the Pooh, Haunted Mansion, and a few more. It's a small world - that about blew my brains out. It was just so much going on, it was complete sensory overload for me. To finish all of it off we waited and saw the Disney Parade of Lights which ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Mesquite February 15th 2016

Just outside of Las Vegas a little over an hour, you can find some of the most beautiful rock formations and open country in the area. You'll have to work for it though as the route to Gold Butte is a bit rough, a lotta bit rough to be honest. This country is BLM land and has been a long time focus of advocates who'd like to see it become a national monument. With our popular House representative on his way out soon, this may just be the year this far out of the way place changes ownership. Luckily, a friend took me out with her and her on the trip and I am super thankful for that - I needed a break from dissertation and this job search! Also, this has been at the top ... read more

Back in the good ol' United States just in time for Christmas in this winter wonderland that is to be found at the base of the Ruby Mountains. I learned a lot about myself, about Peru and about life in general on this latest trip. As is my way, I did learn most of these lessons the hard way. My lack of preparation, perhaps better described as complacency, is responsible for both our Bolivian visa saga as well my extreme altitude sickness. I did enjoy seeing the landscape and the differences between Bolivia and Peru as well as intra-country differences between the Lake Titicaca region, Machu Picchu and the Nazca area. Peru is definitely one of the more developed of the developing countries I've been to and I do believe that with greater investment in infrastructure ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines December 20th 2015

Today I saw the Nazca lines. Over 10 years ago after watching an episode of ancient aliens I knew I had to see these lines. Quite an auspicious beginning I know, as I completely understand that there are other things to see in Peru! The one thing that caught my attention and I knew I had to see these lines and I'm glad I did. It was a lot of work to get there. The lines are in the middle of nowhere, over 20 hours on a bus which seems easy but really when you're moving it about 80 kilometers an hour which is nothing in American miles. You do start to question yourself for 30 minute flight over the Nazca lines. Created by the Nazca people these lines are most likely a means to communicate ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Aguas Calientes December 18th 2015

Right now I'm sitting at a beautiful restaurant in the town of Aguas Calientes which is the starting point to get up to Machu Picchu. The area is beautiful with huge mountain scene that is incredibly green right now in the rainy season and a beautiful river raging through the town. Okay so just a little background on my situation here. I have been extremely sick with altitude sickness. and I just share that with you not to get any pity but just to let you know that these things happen. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't but that doesn't mean you don't do everything you can to enjoy your trip. So today I paid for a late departure at the hotel and then tried to get a little more sleep. And then it ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island December 17th 2015

Yesterday was really just a travel day, but wow! The sites you can see on the bus from Bolivia to Peru. The Bolivian countryside had some mountains, was this beautiful verdant green and was this strange mix of traditional and modern life. Traditional Bolivians worked the fields, perhaps tended sheep or their garden plots, while on the modern side of things there is a massive road building effort which had us in construction most of the way. We were required to first cross the lake via ferry, while our large bus was also ferried over separately. That was a fun experience and then further down the road we had the privilege of leaving Bolivia and walking across the border back to Peru where we find ourselves right now. So, on to today, a fantastic experience that ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz December 15th 2015

Hello! Today we are in Bolivia. It was an aweful trip to get here but we made it. The flight was awful but what really got me was that at the airport they charge you $160 American for a visa to get in and they won't take any twenties that have a single minute rip on them. So you already feel violated, like Bolivia does not want you here, having to pay this massive extortion fee and then they won't take your perfectly good money. Just to warn you think twice about a very short Bolivian trip. It is not cheap at all to get into this country. I made a rookie mistake and didn't check visa reqs before coming here as I've never needed them south of the border. Learn from my mistakes! We arrived ... read more
