Middle East » Jordan » North » Amman June 17th 2012

WelcomeWelcome! I've heard that phrase a hundred times today, these Jordanians do know how to make you feel at home. I'm in the capital of Jordan, Amman, aka the surface of the damn sun. And I love it. I can't understand the Arabic writing, or grasp more than the intent of the call to prayer that blares over the microphone city wide, but I can cross the street just one lane of traffic at a time (no worries fam!) bargain with a street vendor and hale a local cab with the best of them. I didnt use a private taxi once in my five weeks there, only public transit or my own feet, but that's all in the past now, taxi time! I am staying in a hostel right next to the Roman Amphitheater and the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome June 14th 2012

There's a reason, many in fact, tHat the Romans were world leaders, conquerors, for over twenty centuries. This city is magnificent, the scale of buildings and art pieces are larger than life.the pantheo was surrounded by regular buildings, with the Italian stock exchange (a former pagan church, a different kind of worship going on there!) just down the way. Every block seems to have a fountain, or sculpture or an image engraved in the building. Most of which are catholic in nature, though some pagan artifacts are still about. The Trevi Fountain is one of those sites that is really worth the hype, while the Spanish steps were just in fact, steps. Interesting history, but, well just steps! The area around those two attractions is flooded with dolce and gabana, Prada, Gucci and other bullcrap that apparently ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa June 12th 2012

The bustle of Pisa is in the background of my current hostel, cars and horns and italians talking and occasionally a bird tweeting. My hostel is five minutes from the big square of miracles where you will find the Tower, the church and so on. The Tower is quite impressive, the architecture giving me goose bumps. Or maybe that was just the 50 vendors selling their same products within the square! I don't know if I will ever become accustomed to that sight. Beyond the Tower though, there isnt really much. I had been given a bit of advice to not stop overnight, to leave my luggage at the train station and stop over for about three hours or so. However, with my hostel booked and my recent digestive disaster this week, I thought Pisa would ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre June 10th 2012

Today I visited the village of Monterosso, a quick train ride of about five or so minutes south. There is a hiking path between all of the villages, but with the expectation of a good rain today, I decided to pay the five bucks for the trip. Monterosso is similar to Levanto, though the view to the ocean and the artificial bay add a whole new dimension, or distinction from this community. Monterosso and the neighboring villages were slammed by massive waves last year, with businesses and families close to the water experiencing heavy property damages. They are still rebuilding from the damage and a couple if the hiking trails are disconnected due to that damage. Anchovies are a prize here in the community, and have that protected origin designation. You cannot sell an anchovie with the ... read more

I'm over in the west coast of Italy now, in levanto, a town that is part if the Cinque Terre. It's a cluster of five islands along the coast, all within walking distance of each other (when the flooding isn't an issue of course). Staying here is fairly cheap, with a four night stay in a hostel that's only two minutes from the beach, costing me under a hundred bucks, so I'm happy. This place is fairly new to the tourist track and as such there haven't been even a tenth of the street vendors that Venice had. This is a real town where travellers are guests, not the main consumers, at least that's my perception. The beach is beautiful. I always gravitate towards gravel and rocky beaches just so I can see what sort of ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice June 6th 2012

Im right in the middle of the island of Venice, and have finally sat down for abreak after rushing about exploring the city. I had a deep sense of urgency to visit this place after reading an article in the recent past about how Venice is crumbling, in danger of tumbling straight into these famous canals. And having walked around here, I see what they mean, this entire island is in a huge state of disrepair, decay. While I sets a striking scene as far as ambience goes, for the future I do worry for the structural integrity of Venice. The first thing you have to know about this city is that the water is the star of the show. I mean the canals, the aquablue waters and the buildings that housshuhe people and shops of Venice. ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Grindelwald June 4th 2012

Today it isn't raining too bad so I caught a train to the nearby town of grindelvald so that I could check out the waterfalls and caves I have heard about here. The caves are actually part of a man made path carvedoin to the side of an enormous slab of limestone or Alpine chalk, whatever you prefer to call it. The water from the White Lutschine roars, drowning out all other noises. There's a big adventure race going to happen this week, so this hostel is teeming with racers and staff. It is called the apex race if you are interested in following along. I'm rooting for the Kiwis!... read more

Here I am, in the alps of Switzerland, and let me tell you, we have been sold an image of the alps that doesn't do them justice. Things of how beautiful you've always thought they are and them multiply that by at least three and then you can begin to imagine just how much beauty these mountains hold. I'm in Interlacken, a popular town sandwiched between two alpine lakes that run through town in a shade of the purest blue. And my toes can testify that these waters are cold! I'm staying in a tent city, not Arapaio's kind, but in a lot with six bunks to a rent, and yes for some reason the world sees fit to always put me on the top bunk! Luckily my cat like reflexes allow me to jump up ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Versailles May 31st 2012

Todaywas dedicated to visiting the garden city, Versailles and to watching andabsorbing Parisian culture. I spent my time at Versailles entirely in the gardens, miles and miles of manicured green lawn, grasses and trees with beautiful pieces of art work all around. I found what has been my favorite Piec of art so far, check it out here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latona_Fountain The trip was fairly easy to plan and so I had time to comeback into town to hopefully catch the catacombs, those cellars full of the bones of the dead that were moved for hygienic purposes. Well, apparently every other tourist had that same idea as the line was easily 300 people deep. So, you're in Paris for a day, do you spend three hours in line to see the site? Or do yo find a local ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris May 30th 2012

The City of Lights, Paris is my home for the next couple of days. I ran into a bit of luck when my train arrived as an outbound tourist gave me fevered voucher for the double decker sight seeing buses that run the course of the city. This was incredible luck, because at 50bucks I would never have purchased this item and yet it proved to be absolutealy amazing! I saw all the main sites of the city, for free! The Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Champ Elysses, the Louvre and....drum roll please....the Eiffel tower! To get mushy and cheesy for just a moment, when I hopped off the bus at the louvre (side note, that pyramid in front of it does look stupid, and yet, it's intriguing at the same time, I'm undecided I should ... read more
