Geo: 43.7676, 4.10119When we left Camping La Serre last Thursday, we encountered a peaceful protest on passing through Mirepoix, being part of the nationwide strike action. We simply took the flyer offered and drove on our way.We joined the motorway network just before Carcassonne which would take us within a few miles of our next destination in Languedoc. It was busy with commercial traffic - far more than we had encountered for a few weeks, and soon we were on the A9 motorway forming the Italy/Spain route through France just as the Romans would have done centuries ago. The Languedocienne is currently undergoing a major upgrade, but traffic flowed well. Our destination, Camping Domaine de Massereau, just outside Sommieres, is ten years old this month after being started by two brothers - one with background in winemaking, ... read more

Geo: 42.998, 1.8712Saturday, there was an opportunity for boys and their toys so David took up the offer to go with fellow camper, Rob, to the racetrack at Nogaro where an endurance race was taking place over the weekend. Surprisingly, admission for spectators was free of charge, but they had a good look around the pits, watched some of the laps, before coming back to the site, on what must have been one of the warmest days so far.Having decided that we must progress with this year's tour, Sunday was our final day in the Gers, and despite the poor forecast we decided to go to St. Puy for the annual May Festival event - an Anglo-French affair and much like a village fete with stalls, sideshows and foodie offerings. As we arrived, a nine piece ... read more

Geo: 43.8695, 0.258925On Tuesday we had a ride out to the village of La Romieu. After a lazy day or two we made a conscious effort to get out relatively early but we need not have rushed since the attractions did not open until 10.30, but we passed the time over a coffee in the sunshine and wrote Mum's latest postcard. On first arriving, the wide verges planted with trees, and mellow stone cottages put me in mind of Chipping Camden in the Cotswolds. The roses are particularly pretty at this time of year and next weekend is the annual rose festival event.Founded in the 14th century by the Cardinal Arnaud d'Aux, the Collegiate Church of St. Peter is a magnificent example of southern European gothic architecture. Geo: 43.8695, 0.258911The Gers region is very rural with little by way of industrial development, other than vines and the processing activities associated with wine, that is, so it makes for a most relaxing atmosphere. Little wonder that there is a growing ex-pat community, including notably Nigel Lawson and the late Terry Wogan who 18 years ago sold his place in Spain because, so he said, they fancied a change. On staying at a small hotel in order to explore the area for a potential holiday home, he discovered it was up for sale so bought it thus giving them several ensuite bedrooms for visiting family and friends. No doubt they appreciated too the virtual anonymity that the area gave them too.Anyhow, this last week we set about seeing some of the countryside using Sonia and ... read more

Geo: 43.8694, 0.258766Our campsite hosts Walter and Sonia are intent on their clients having a memorable experience, going that extra mile with facilities and service, such as water controls in the shower ensuring a continuous flow of hot water - far better than those frustrating push buttons - a pet hate of mine. Also, their very useful and informative handouts with details of what's going on in the local area. This led us to have an enjoyable trip out yesterday morning to Fourcès some 30 minutes away.Fourcès - meaning 'planted with trees', is a charming little bastide town, with an unusual circular, rather than square central 'place' shaded by plane trees, plus an ancient castle, bridge, clocktower and many timbered houses. The invaluable event listing advised of an antique or 'brocante' fair taking place there throughout ... read more

Geo: 43.8694, 0.258891I have said it before that the Internet has drastically changed our caravanning trips, as a tool for research, keeping in touch with nearest and dearest, as well as navigation, not to mention this blog which to all intents and purposes is my personal travel journal to look back on in years to come. When we decided that the time had come for the both of us to give up employment, our first extended tour in 2013 was hatched trawling the web for areas to visit, sights to see and campsites on which to stay. Whilst websites such as the Caravan Club, Trip Advisor, U.K. Campsite and Wikipedia were a wealth of information, I also sought out sites for other nomadic bloggers, some by caravan, others motorhome, some part-time like ourselves, some who had ... read more

Geo: 46.3153, -0.609801Well, Dear Reader, whether you are new to these pages or returning to our long distance caravanning saga, we are currently on Day 13 since leaving home on Friday, 22nd April, in Western France at Coulon which is 40 minutes or so due east from La Rochelle. We began the trip with three nights at Rookesbury Park Caravan Club site so as to spend some time with expectant daughter and husband. A pub lunch on the Saturday was followed by a relaxing afternoon chatting and snoozing, while the following day was very energetic for Olley as he ran the Southampton half-marathon accompanied by Dean, his cousin Angie's partner. After completing in a respectable time they returned to Angie's where she had prepared a delicious curry meal for us all.On the Monday morning, having moved to ... read more

Geo: 52.757, -1.93461After 95 nights away, we walked through the door of home last Friday (14th) after the worst journey during our trip. What would usually take 3 hours towing time, took 4½ hours due to motorway closures and holdups on the M42 and M6 – it's little wonder that European tourists are so reluctant to come over here. Even with driving on the right-hand side, we never encountered such stressful traffic volumes and road works like this.Anyhow, we left Potes in the Picos de Europa on Monday (10th) just after 8am so as to negotiate the long and winding road back to the Autovia that would take us on our final Spanish transfer to Santander. Thankfully there was little traffic at that time of the morning, and well before the tourist coaches bound for the ... read more

Geo: 43.1544, -4.64383We do like mountains, especially in fine weather - nature's theme park for thrills and spectacle. Over the years we have enjoyed the Highlands of Scotland, the Italian Dolomites, Austrian, Swiss and French Alps, Pyrenees, to name a few, but I only became aware of Spain's Picos de Europa a couple of years ago during our 'Grand Tour'. On that occasion our route meant that we would be visiting in late September and we didn't think the weather would be ideal, so we would leave it for another year. Given the climate of northern Spain and our departure date, we decided on a clockwise circumnavigation, thus leaving Cantabria until the end. Indeed, now that we have sorted our journey home by ferry from Santander departing on Monday, this is our last stop in Europe ... read more

Geo: 43.5531, -6.12948We had a very unsettled spell over three days including a prolonged thunderstorm one night, but yesterday (Saturday) dawned sunny and brighter as forecasted so we picked upon a suggestion from a tourist office leaflet to go inland and explore highland villages. Like Scotland, many are now abandoned and in ruins, the scenery was stunning but still sustains the grazing of livestock, including horses.Beyond the village of San Martin de Luina and about five miles inland from the coast, the road became single-track, quickly climbing to well over 2,000 feet. The panoramic view down towards the sea was spectacular and as we descended we never met another vehicle which was just as well as passing opportunities were few and far between and the drop perilous. This didn't deter a number of keen road-cyclists who ... read more
