Geo: 43.9055, 10.7882When we arrived at Camping Belsito, we were handed a sheet with general information as well a suggestion for things to see and do for every day of the week.On Sunday David went out solo to explore by bike but was back after an hour since the climbs are very steep - more so than the terrain down in the south of France. For the remainder of the day we relaxed with our books, puzzles and games, just as suggested on the campsite instructions.Monday, Republic Day in Italy, we drove through Monsummano Terme, Montevettolini and Lamporecchio to Vinci - the birthplace of the great Leonardo of that name. The town is surrounded by lush, green countryside planted with olives and vines, and at the foot of Montalbano - a range of hills stretching between ... read more

Geo: 43.9055, 10.7882On Wednesday, the sun was shining so we decided to repeat the bike ride we did from here last year. Since I had not used mine in five months and with very little other physical exercise, I was struggling with many of the early inclines and had to walk some of the way. However, this does have its benefits since you can safely take in the fantastic views over the wooded Ligurian hillsides dotted with hamlets of dwellings in a multitude of terracotta shades, with very little traffic. The peace is temporarily broken though as you pass beneath the motorway viaduct. After settling the bill, we left Finale Ligure on Friday to rejoin the motorway which would take us through Genoa via numerous tunnels closely bordered by residential high-rise living then into Tuscany, with the ... read more

Geo: 44.17, 8.34517After intending a 6-day stay at St. Clair, we left after 12. Our excuse was to avoid the motorway traffic around the Monaco GP weekend!David continued with his bike rides into the hills with Rien which he enjoyed immensely, particularly the banter from his bike-buddy. Meanwhile, I pottered about back at the 'van, researching the trip, reading and sitting in the sun.Saturday evening, Rien kindly invited us 'next door' for supper prepared and cooked by himself - a concoction of grilled aubergine, ham, mozzarella and tomato, followed by pasta with a meat and ratatouille-type sauce. Another enjoyable evening was had by all.Monday dawned and it was time to think about packing away but David spotted that one of the rear tyres was looking flat. He inflated it using his cycle pump before we set ... read more

Geo: 43.1441, 6.38115We are enjoying this relaxing, delightful place so much we are not now moving on into Italy until Tuesday. There's so many places to see and things we would like to do that we must tear ourselves away sooner rather than later.David is in cycling heaven and even has a bike-buddy in our neighbour, Rien, a Dutchman who knows the area well. At 68 with many miles touring all over Europe, both on four wheels (in his camper van) and two (by bike), and sports including speed skating, David is in awe of his physical fitness and stamina for his age. The two of them went out for a three hour ride on Sunday which at times left David lagging behind, but there again he is a relative newcomer to the hobby. The route ... read more

Geo: 43.144, 6.38112Our evening meal last night at Le Bontemps, near Vernioz, was not a gastronomic feast but more simple everyday dishes. David chose a burger and I had lasagne, preceded by a shot of pastis (Ricard - the best - according to the brother and sister running the establishment), and a couple of glasses of respectable local red. However, we were joined in the restaurant by three other couples - one Belgian, one German and one British, so we passed an enjoyable couple of hours exchanging camping stories. Fortunate for us, given that the Belgians and British did not speak German, or any of us speak Flemish, it was all in English. We came away with some useful tips of places to visit and things to see.Our departure ran more smoothly this morning so we were ... read more

Geo: 45.426, 4.92821It was an interesting night's sleep beside the lake, being interrupted by noises from the assorted wildlife, including what sounded like chattering. A neighbouring camper said it was coypu - never heard that before. We arrived at our next destination in good time, but unfortunately the reception was closed for lunch. It never ceases to amaze me that in this day and age when everyone is trying to make a living that such places still adhere to this outdated tradition. However, we checked in at 1.30 but the allocated pitch was disappointing - uneven grass and beneath trees (a few twigs rattled on the roof during our stay, but it probably sounded worse than what it was and no apparent damage done). It was cool and showery too so himself was not very happy. We were ... read more

Geo: 49.7837, 3.21424We left the UK this morning on P&O's Dover-Calais crossing to start this year's trip, though it will be no where near as extensive as 2013. Over the next 8 weeks or so, we plan to take in the south of France (we are in need of warmth and sunshine), Italy, Croatia and Slovenia. Although we have visited Italy on a number of occasions, there are still areas we should like to explore, and Croatia is new to us but comes highly recommended so a 'must see' before it becomes too popular and overcrowded.Last year's five-month odyssey proved to be a life-changing experience leaving us quite unsettled over the winter months to the extent of even talking about becoming snowbirds in Southern Spain at some time. Despite the last UK winter being comparatively mild, ... read more

Geo: 52.7587, -1.93085Despite the wet weather we have spent a great few days over the weekend catching up with family.Friday morning I had a much needed haircut in Wickham, and later we went along to Louise and Olley's for lasagne and more chat.Saturday evening we were joined by Kate, Chris's girlfriend who is now studying at Portsmouth Uni, for a meal at the Kings Head in Wickham Village. This was followed on Sunday by Louise's delicious roast beef and Yorkshire pudding lunch - something I had missed and craved despite some memorable dining.Anyhow, all good things must come to an end so this morning after our 152nd sleep and in our 22nd week on the road we left Rookesbury Park for our final journey back to the Midlands. During our 7,500 miles by car, this turned ... read more

Geo: 50.8811, -1.20237The final transfer to Benouville was wet and grim, but we made good progress despite travelling on comparatively busy roads. As the campsite closed for lunch between 12 and 2, we had about an hour to kill based on the satnav prediction so with half an hour's travelling time left we pulled in at an 'aire' - not a service area like on UK motorways, but a large, glorified layby with loos and picnic tables - but in this case there was an additional sign for 'frites' which turned out to be a mobile fast food wagon. With the rain lashing down by this time, rather than making up our usual baguette-based lunch in the caravan, we decided to dine trucker-style under the canopy. The friendly proprietor took our order which, when it arrived was ... read more

Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire October 16th 2013

Geo: 47.0746, -0.41011It has rained just a bit too much in recent days so that yesterday we took the decision to make for home sooner rather than later. So, after an overnight stop at a site we have used at Benouville, near the famous Pegasus Bridge connected with WW2 history, we shall be on the early morning ferry from Ouistreham (Caen) bound for Portsmouth tomorrow. We prefer this route since it gives us a better journey home, plus it avoids the dreaded M25 when using Dover/Calais.Yesterday afternoon, with all the journey bookings done, we drove out to Vihiers for groceries and fuel from SuperU, then called at the local family-owned winery in the village for a tasting and purchase of a few bottles of Loire to remind us of this part of our trip. I told ... read more
