Geo: 39.4891, -6.41299Having decided against the option of the bus which leaves from outside the campsite, we drove into nearby Cacares and found the recommended multi-storey car park for visiting the old city - although as with many that we have used in Spain, we were in fact underground rather than above. Access to some can be rather tight, but you do tend to go off sightseeing with some reassurance that your vehicle is safe - a sign of the times, sadly - plus it is in the shade.Anyhow, we followed the signs through narrow cobbled alleyways to what is reputed to be one of the most authentic medieval and Renaissance cities, with little changing in the last five to six hundred years. On reaching the Plaza Mayor, our first stop was the tourist information office for ... read more

Geo: 39.4891, -6.41294Yesterday (Thursday) afternoon we drove a few miles in the direction of Portugal, turned off for the town of Malpartida and a small national park by the name of Los Barruecos which we explored by car and the occasional short foray on foot. Here, we found two distinctive features of interest - landscape and wildlife. The park is littered with huge weather-worn boulders - some lying alone and others in piles with the odd one perched precariously. The sight is quite eerie and so unlike anything we had seen in Spain so far. If anything, it reminded me of the Roaches, just north of Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands, which I had first encountered on a geography field trip from school. The park has a number of lakes which are home to numerous species of bird ... read more

Geo: 39.4891, -6.41298On our last full day in Aranjuez (Tuesday) we stayed close to 'home', had coffee and Jaffa cakes over a natter with Dorothy and Eric during the morning. Then, after lunch we walked from the site through some of the formal gardens of the Palacio Real which must have been very grand in their heyday. In the intense heat of the day, the trees provided some welcome shade. We chose not to go round the interior of the Palace for which there is an entrance fee, but from outside it looks very grand, although it is free of charge to wander the extensive grounds and confines as we did. Not that that swayed our decision, you understand!Back at the 'van, another invite to join Dorothy and Eric this time for a glass of wine and ... read more

Geo: 40.042, -3.59986On Sunday, by 8pm you would not have believed we were on the same campsite. One by one pitches emptied and a quiet hush descended on the place, so a good night's sleep was at last a promising possibility. Unfortunately, the barking dog behind us is still here and judging by the way the pitch is set up they are here for the long-haul.We set the alarm for Monday morning so as to get an early start to visit Toledo (25 miles away) which had been highly recommended by a number of people and before 9am we were on the road driving across the dry, arid landscape. Parking in the city is tricky, but one suggestion was to seek out the underground car parks which have escalators nearby cut into the rock face to ... read more

Geo: 40.0421, -3.60022Saturday morning we walked out through the former palace gardens (planted with sprouts of all things next to the site) into Aranjuez in search of the weekly street market, which turned out to be a lively affair with very vocal stall holders promoting their wares. The first bit is clothes, household goods (towels, bedding and the like) and a number of unofficial traders who do not rent a traditional wooden stall but set out their Calvin Klein underwear, designer handbags, CDs and perfumes on a basic tarpaulin in the middle of the walkway ready to be scooped up for a quick getaway if the authorities spot them. Some of them seemed to be doing a roaring trade. At the end of this run is a separate section for fruit and veg of all shapes, sizes and ... read more

Geo: 40.042, -3.59983Our four nights at Marjal Guardamar came to an end and David thankfully was showing signs of being on the mend. The site facilities and pitch were fine, but we did not find the surrounding area inspiring or interesting - we were a bit despondent to say the least. So, after emailing ahead yesterday, we are now in Aranjuez, some 30-40 miles south of Madrid. This has meant a change to the intended itinerary, which was not set in stone anyway, so we shall not now be visiting Andalusia, Costa de la Luz or the Algarve this year.By recent standards, at 250 miles, it was quite a long transfer, but the road network was superb and extremely quiet - so quiet that I took a spell behind the wheel for 90 minutes or so. ... read more

Geo: 38.1089, -0.655788Last Saturday in Javea was very much a socialising day, when the weather was overcast, cooler than of late, and showery. In the afternoon, Jan and Ria, the Dutch couple came to us for a drink and snacks since they intended to leave and move south the following day (Sunday). We spent an enjoyable couple of hours discussing various topics, obviously caravanning and our current respective itineraries, food, wine, but also David and Jan share hands-on experience of motor sport but in different areas. We have enjoyed their company so have exchanged emails to keep in touch with each others travels. They, like us, have no fixed plan, just a rough idea of where they might go, do and see.Later, we met up with the Javea MacLachlan clan, brothers (John Paul and Jason) of our ... read more

Geo: 38.7827, 0.173545This morning we explored Javea in the opposite direction, that is, down towards the coastal promenade then round to the working port (both leisure and commercial fishing vessels). We went on foot as opposed to taking the car and parking up which is an added bonus when on a site as it tends to be less stressful, cheaper and healthier since we are getting exercise. We indulged in a spot of cafe culture by stopping off for a coffee overlooking the sea before walking around the port then along the harbour wall and back. Before setting off back to the site we stopped off at Polly's Bookstore where approximately 10,000 second-hand paperback books are on sale, primarily for the ex-pat community, but also for tourists passing through like ourselves. Since David had long since read ... read more

Geo: 38.7827, 0.173537On our last full day at Ribamar we didn't venture far - just to the little secluded beach beyond the gate at the bottom of the site for an hour or so late afternoon when the heat had slightly gone out of the fierce sun. For the last few days, we have enjoyed cloudless, bright blue skies, coupled with high temperatures. This would have been the perfect get away from it all location except for two things - children and dogs. For several nights, a group of kids could be heard running around making a noise after dark until almost midnight, within the curfew rules set by the management, but in our opinion unfair for the majority of the clientele given the general tranquil ambience of the site. As for dogs, we experienced several off ... read more

Geo: 40.2697, 0.307674We thought this morning that after a lazy few days we ought to explore the surrounding area, so we decided on Peniscola, some 20 miles up the coast which had been recommended by our Dutch neighbours. Perhaps the name, related to a male body part, was an omen - read on!We decided not to take the motorway on which we arrived last Wednesday, but to take the alternative N340. It was a good, fast road, much used by commercial as well as other traffic, but through up a few unexpected surprises. First of all we spotted a guy having a pee in the field alongside the road but he was far from discreet, with everything on show to all who passed by. We had encountered the French at the side of the road relieving ... read more
