Geo: 47.2364, 11.3373Thursday - the alarm went off at 6.30 signalling the time to get the show on the road, and after collecting the bread from the shop and final farewell to Aline we were off-site at 8am bound for Innsbruck in Austria. The route just beyond Interlaken was full of hairpin bends and climbs and descents, to such an extent that David questioned whether we were on the right road. I assured him that Michelin-man had recommended the route so on we went. The route took us through numerous tunnels and we marvelled at the engineering that had gone on to create them and what a difference they must have made to the locals and tourists alike. The longest one, Arlberg, for which there was a toll of €9 went on for miles and was truly impressive. After ... read more

Geo: 46.6858, 7.8307Yesterday started as promised so we showered and breakfasted pronto then drove out to Scheltenberg, the base station for the cable cars to take us the 30-minute ascent to the peak of Schiltorn. That in itself was a beautiful journey but once up at the top it was wall-to-wall mountains as far as the eye could see, many covered in snow.Thankfully there were fewer tourists than had been up at Jungfraujoch on Saturday so it made for a more relaxing experience. We walked around the viewing platforms taking in the spectacular panorama but unfortunately the three peaks of Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger were topped with clouds throughout. Indeed, as time past more cloud came in and out to spoil the view so we were glad to have had an early start. The mountain of Schiltorn ... read more

Geo: 46.6857, 7.83051Although Tuesday started with low cloud the forecast was for brighter things so we set off just beyond Brienz to Ballenburg to look around the open-air museum of Swiss buildings. We have visited similar set ups in the UK like Avoncroft, near Bromsgrove, and the Weald and Downland, Sussex, but this was impressive and on a large scale. They have reconstructed over 100 buildings from all regions of Switzerland, many with interiors and fittings to match. You are pretty much free to roam where you please with the exhibits mainly unchained so that you can get up close - no over powering stewards telling you not to touch. Several of the buildings have compounds or shelters for animals including fowl, pigs, goats, cows and donkeys.... read more

Geo: 46.6859, 7.8307We had rain overnight and on waking it was damp, gloomy and overcast. After breakfast we strolled into Interlaken rather than taking the bus to do a bit of grocery shopping. After lunch the weather was not promising - one or two short spells of sunshine and warmth, so we did not venture forth, opting to potter about - David cleaning the bikes, me doing the ironing. A little later a couple of British caravans checked in, two couples we had met last week at the site in the Black Forest. They are now on their way back to UK from Austria - the same site that we are due to travel to on Thursday. By all accounts we shall be impressed. The ducks joined us outside this evening as we had a cuppa and some ... read more

Geo: 46.6858, 7.83081We are really glad that we did Jungfraujoch yesterday as this morning was decidedly cooler and cloudier - the peaks not at all clear. So we decided to go out on our bikes and chose a route beyond Interlaken around Lake Brienzersee. A few miles in it started to drizzle but we continued steadfastly which turned out to be wise decision as it did not amount to much with conditions gradually improving. On reaching Brienz we stopped at a cafe for coffee and a sticky bun before setting off once again. However our plan to continue around the other side of the lake to do a circular route was unsuccessful as the path indicated on the cycling leaflet could not be found, so we decided to return by the same route. We stopped several times to ... read more

Geo: 46.6859, 7.83068We did the Jungfraujoch as planned and what a spectacular day it has been.Alarm was set for 6.30 and we caught the 7.45 bus into Interlaken, walked along to the tourist info bureau to buy our tickets as they opened, followed by a stroll along to the station in order to catch the 8.35 train bound for the top. It takes over two and a half hours in total with a couple of train changes along the way to reach the end of the line at 'Top of Europe' being the highest railway station in the continent at over 11,000'.The weather was bright and sunny though the temperature noticeably dropped as we climbed, putting on more layers as we went. Some were clearly not prepared for the climatic changes of altitude! One guy had ... read more

Geo: 46.6852, 7.83016The day started bright and sunny, so after breakfast we set off to look around Interlaken itself taking advantage of the free pass for local buses. It does take you all around the houses but still a bonus. At the tourist info we checked out the Jungfraujoch excursion, otherwise known as 'Top of Europe' which was at the top of our wish list of things to do whilst here. Looking at the weather forecast, we are going to go for it tomorrow with an early start. It's not cheap but we may never pass this way again.Afterwards, we watched the para gliders landing in the Central Park area, both solo and tandem. David was very taken with the idea so on return to the site decided to go for it and a couple of ... read more

Geo: 46.6856, 7.83051Sorry there was not an entry for yesterday (Wednesday) - we lost our Internet connection.Anyway, we spent some time across the border in France. I had read about a couple of worthwhile places to visit so we set off to explore and we were not disappointed.First stop was Riquewihr - a medieval town with cobbled streets and brightly painted buildings. Despite being very much on the tourist trail we found it thoroughly charming. Very much our type of place. We had lunch of quiche lorraine - obviously a local dish - washed down with the local white vino. The restaurant was quaint, with tables set outdoors in a cobbled courtyard. We then drove the short distance to Ribeauville which was not quite so atmospheric, but we were taken with the storks nesting on the roof of ... read more

Geo: 47.8721, 7.73554Yesterday (Monday) was cool and overcast so we did not do a great deal. We took a stroll into Staufen from the site to have a look around and get our bearings, then some grocery shopping It's a charming little place - very clean and tidy with some stylish shops. None of the Rudesheim 'tat' here!We also had a drive out to the car wash to clean the BMW after all the falling debris from the trees in Rudesheim. It was quite a challenge to interpret how the machine operates given the language barrier, but David sorted it out thanks to a mechanic who spoke very good English. This morning dawned bright and sunny, full of promise, so we set out early by our standards for Cafe Decker in Staufen for a coffee and Black ... read more

Geo: 47.8717, 7.73591Hi, folks. From Luxembourg, we moved onto Rudesheim in Germany, but there was no wifi facility at the site so no postings from there, not as it was memorable for all the right reasons.First of all, the directions for finding the site were inadequate and we missed the turning, ended up along the main thoroughfare along with hundreds of Harley's congregating for the weekend event. We eventually found the site, pitched, including the awning for the first time this holiday, sat out in the sunshine. Over night the wind got up and blew lots of stuff off the surrounding trees onto the car and caravan, and it rained! Car and caravan are now filthy. Cleaning of vehicles is strictly frowned upon for eco reasons so it may be the car wash for the car at ... read more
