Geo: 37.6228, -4.85856On Thursday morning within minutes we were on the Autovia making our way to the next stop which would give us the opportunity to see one of the 'must see' places on our list - the Mezquita or Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba. As we neared our destination the landscape was one of intense cultivation including mile upon mile of olive groves and later bright yellow sunflowers. Camping La Campina was easy to find and by late morning we were checking in, though we had been rather concerned that our email asking about availability had not been acknowledged. We need not have worried though as Mathilde and Rick were expecting us and even had a suitable pitch set aside given the length of our caravan. The Spanish/Dutch couple were very helpful when planning our day in Córdoba. Geo: 37.225, -3.48806As David was feeling much improved, yesterday morning we left El Berro several days later than intended but every cloud has a silver lining. When I went to reception to settle up (it is very rare that you have to cough up in full over here when you check in) we not only got the ACSI discount card rate of €16 but as we had stayed seven nights paid for six, making it just over a tenner a night, with excellent free wifi too. Not that we are scrimping but every little helps when you are away as long as we are.Whilst the scenery in Murcia and the Sierra Espuna was dramatic and unusual, in my book it was not as pleasing on the eye as some of the locations we have visited in ... read more

Geo: 37.8888, -1.49364It's Day 35 already - can you believe it! The temperatures haven't been as high as on the coast and at times there is a freshness in the breeze, but still pleasant. The stat on the central heating kicked in during the night a few times too. We had the forecasted rain on Thursday but Angela says that it is welcome since like the Serengeti, they may not see any more until October. We are currently in Murcia and the more rural, natural Spain we were seeking two years ago after travelling through the bustling, high-rise Costas. A British traveller advised us we would need to go inland and this little sleepy backwater must be about 15 miles as the crow flies from the Med.Anyhow, to bring our readers up-to-date, we left Alcossebre last Tuesday ... read more

Geo: 40.3046, 0.226305After a lazy first full day, our priority on Thursday was leaving the site to get fuel as we were down to a 40-mile reserve, so the satnav duly programmed took us out of Alcossebre to the nearest filling station. Diesel was €1.19 a litre (about 94p) so very good for the budget.Next stop, the ferreteria (hardware shop) where David bought a brush for washing the car and caravan, followed by supermarket shopping. Since our last visit a large Consum store has been built and whilst not traditional Spanish shopping it does make life easier for us. Not only was there known brands (Paxo sage and onion stuffing mix, Weetabix) but also the occasional tannoy announcement in English too. For anyone in a motorhome or not wanting to take the car, the site runs ... read more

Geo: 40.2696, 0.307225It was with some reluctance that we tore ourselves away from our first Spanish site of the trip, Camping Can Coromines, after a relaxing ten days. Not only were the site facilities very good but the owners and their family who run it are very personable and helpful. David in particular enjoyed Marc's company, and the two would often chat and debate all sorts of topics, with much humour thrown in. A lovely man. Both Marc and Sally are very hands on in respect of the site - he doing maintenance, mowing, bar - while Sally doing meet, greet, welcome, preparing accommodation (apartments and glamping pods) and judging by the reviews she is no slouch in the kitchen either in high season when the informal restaurant operates. So, farewells said, including our neighbours from The ... read more

Geo: 42.2096, 2.73789When we chose to stay in this area of Catalonia, at the top of my 'must see' list was the museum in Figueres devoted to the Surrealist artist, Salvador Dali. From my History of Art days at school in the 70s, I can remember being fascinated by the weird and wonderful paintings he created. I even had a huge jigsaw with his 'Metamorphosis of Narcissus' as its subject and with so much going on in the picture it was wonderful to see the crazy, dreamy scene gradually emerging piece-by-piece, wondering what on earth had been going on inside his head. The Dali Theatre-Museum occupies the former Municipal Theatre which was destroyed at the end of the Spanish Civil War. On its ruins Dali decided to create his museum for three reasons: he considered himself to ... read more

Geo: 42.2099, 2.73759Having arrived here on Saturday, we felt it was high time we did some sightseeing. We ventured out yesterday afternoon in search of groceries and fuel but only managed the latter as supermarkets were closed. The date was not listed in our campsites of Spain handbook as being a public holiday. I did wonder if it was connected with the day before (Sunday) being elections, but never got to the bottom of it. Needless to say we didn't starve. This morning we drove along to Besalu - just a couple or so miles. It is of medieval origin and its ancient bridge is its most distinctive landmark. As this was our first intended stop in Spain, I had selected an image of the bridge from the Internet to use as the title pic for the ... read more

Geo: 45.7007, 3.16976Monday morning we packed up leisurely in preparation for our next transfer of just over 200 miles. After the first 20 miles we joined the motorway network which took us almost to our next stop - Camping Le Clos Auroy at Orcet, south of Clermont Ferrand - in the area of the Auvergne, famed for its extinct volcanoes. The highest and most famous is the Puy de Dome and that is where we ventured yesterday afternoon. In the morning, we needed some provisions so off we went to the local Lidl store - something of an infatuation for us now during our European travels, and when using the stores in the UK you can almost imagine yourself abroad! Anyway, while I was getting foodie items, David was despatched to find wine since the 'cellar' was ... read more

Geo: 47.4029, 0.779408We spent Friday night pitched on Camping Les Pommiers which is a municipal site just minutes after disembarking at Ouistreham. It was not somewhere we would spend many nights but more than adequate under the circumstances and we soon dropped off to sleep.Yesterday morning (Saturday) we set off for our next destination, Camping Les Acacias, at La Ville-aux-Dames just outside Tours on the Loire. Again, not the best site we have stayed on but the allocated pitch is fairly flat, requiring little levelling, and the loo/shower block very clean, modern, hot showers, so all-in-all not too bad as a stopover. What more would we want? There is a long distance cycle route across the road which would be worth exploring another time.We had our first of many croissants this morning for breakfast. They just ... read more

Geo: 50.8993, -1.18827Although I had been planning and researching for this trip over the winter we took the plunge and booked a one-way ferry, insurance, euros, pre-ferry site and first two on the other side just last Thursday. A busy few days followed and we pulled off the drive after lunch on Tuesday with all the usual panics about things left undone or possibly not packed haunting me en-route but these things disappeared as we checked into the oasis that is the peaceful, wooded Caravan Club site - Rookesbury Park, near Wickham. We have stayed here before as not only is it near to Portsmouth for ferries (15 minutes on a good day) but our daughter and husband live nearby too. This has worked to their advantage since I have prepared meals for them as they came ... read more
