Geo: 43.5531, -6.12948On Monday morning we moved on to the next province along the coast to Asturias through some beautiful, lush green landscapes - you can see why they call it the Costa Verde - our destination being the picturesque coastal town of Cudillero, though our base is actually at Aronces a little further beyond. The final approach instructions for arriving at Camping Cudillero state clearly that caravans and motorhomes should not approach through the town itself and on driving through by car later it is clearly evident why due to the steep, narrow, cobbled streets. Our email enquiry about availability of a suitable pitch had gone unanswered but thankfully there was plenty of space as we arrived around midday, to a surprisingly frosty welcome from the young woman at reception. However, we were soon setting up ... read more

Geo: 43.2961, -8.81109In the end, come Friday morning I was relieved to see the back of Camping San Francisco. It could be so quiet and peaceful at times, but come nightfall through until midnight young children (some looked no more than age 5) ran amok, playing hide and seek around the cramped pitches, shrieking, bumped into our caravan on more than one occasion. I am all for families and their offspring enjoying holidays under canvas or in caravans, but this was beyond the limit for me particularly as the receptionist informed us that a security guard is on duty at night. Perhaps it is a Spanish thing since we have experienced noisy behaviour in the past from both young and older. Our next transfer was a short one - barely two hours - to Camping Sisargas, near ... read more

Geo: 42.7628, -9.07343This year we have pretty much stuck to our intended clockwise route around the Iberian peninsula but the area I had least planned was northern Spain, with the exception of the Picos de Europa mountain range - a 'must see', we had both agreed. This was partly due to not knowing how long we would be able to devote to exploring the area and also the weather, which can be changeable. Indeed, as we drove northwards the cloud cover was low, the first rain we had seen in six weeks appeared on the windscreen and a layer of 'Scotch mist' was hovering over the indented coast as we neared our next destination. When asked, one of our fellow travellers at Quinta Chave Grande who knew Galicia told us about Muros, and we are presently pitched ... read more

Geo: 41.8251, -8.31837On Thursday morning we left Quinta Chave Grande and one of the friendliest campsites we have ever visited, but not before buying rolls from the ever-smiling baker, Amadeus. It is clear why so many return year after year to chill out and indeed why some eventually buy homes, be it for vacations or retirement. Not for us though - at the moment, our holiday home is where we choose to park it!Although our destination was northwards, given the rural location and how narrow some of the nearby roads were, we opted to play it safe and head south to rejoin the motorway network near Viseu on which we had arrived a week before. Once on the comparatively stress-free highway our course took us near the places we had visited a couple of days earlier ... read more

Geo: 40.824, -7.69385Before relating details of our long excursion yesterday, a bit more about day-to-day life here at Camping Chave Grande. What sets this site above the level of many that we have used over the years is that our hosts, Lidia and Jorge go the extra mile in creating the best experience possible for their clients. Take Sunday, for instance, when we went to the evening buffet of Portuguese 'cold table' - a wide selection of delicious cold meats, cheeses, artisan bread, honey and the equivalent, I guess, of our chutney which looked like sliced jelly! This time, our fellow guests were French (a young family of five plus a couple nearer our age who later proudly showed David his Land Rover Defender - boys and their toys) and a Danish family, the latter are clearly ... read more

Geo: 40.824, -7.69385On Thursday morning we were on the road northwards shortly after 8.30am - earlier than planned. Due to the steep driveway out of the Camping Pelinos 77, we had taken Remy up on his offer of a tow out but he had overlooked that he had a hospital appointment later in the day, and was knocking on the door at 7.30am to apologise, so it would need to be sooner rather than later. We had time enough for a cuppa and bowl of cereal before disconnecting and packing away - no hot shower that morning. Our early start meant that we were pulling alongside reception at our next campsite, Quinta Chave Grande, to the north of Satao at lunchtime. The site came highly recommended by British neighbours, Nick and Caroline, on the only Portuguese stop ... read more

Geo: 39.6378, -8.33616We're on Day 57 already and still more than a month to go. I booked the return ferry a couple of weeks ago, so I shall dose myself with Stugeron since it is the 24-hour crossing from Santander in northern Spain into Portsmouth and I don't sail well. At least it will give us more time to explore Spain and Portugal rather than using a week to take the slower route up through France to one of the Channel ports. However, back to more current matters, on Sunday, we reluctantly said goodbye to the lovely people we had met in just a few days at Camping Alentejo, hitting the road yet again in a northerly direction for Tomar and arrived at Camping Pelinos 77 just after lunch.Although I study websites and all the wonderful resources ... read more

Geo: 38.7917, -7.68861Monday morning we left Camping Turiscampo on the Western Algarve, joined the motorway, heading due north, so you could almost say we are on our way home despite still having several more weeks yet to go.Our journey of just over 200 miles used the congestion free motorways and was straightforward, with Camping Alentejo situated alongside the road a short distance beyond the small village of Evoramonte. With just 30 pitches in a rural setting this is more our type of site and after ringing the bell beside the reception, the Dutch owner, Siboe, came to greet us and checked us in. We set up on a gravelled pitch offering some shade looking out on to a plantation of cork trees, while beyond is Siboe's small herd of reddish-brown cattle grazing. The Alentejo, a big fertile ... read more

Geo: 37.1026, -8.73425After heeding the suggestion of a British-born owner of a gift shop in Praia de Luz, yesterday we headed for the hills, or the Serra de Monchique to be precise in order to find the alternative Portugal. Once off the initial bit of motorway, the road meandered uphill through pine and eucalyptus clad hills before turning in a westerly direction south of Monchique itself. The route along the ridge went through little hamlets with panoramic views down to the Algarve Coast in the distance. At a fitting viewpoint we stopped for coffee to take in the scene from the terrace, with citrus trees below. The only other customers were two Dutch guys out for a ride from the coast on their motorcycles, as ever speaking excellent English, the conversation mainly revolving around football, such ... read more

Geo: 37.103, -8.73397The searing heat of Spain became rather wearing but it did have the positive effect of suppressing our appetites, taking to supplementing main meals with lots of liquid. No harm done but it will be a good excuse to make up for 'lost' meals later on!By our standards, Monday was at 250 miles a long transfer, so we set off due west onto the Autovia, round the outskirts of Seville (the most we are going to see of the city on this occasion), then back on the motorway network taking us into Portugal. At the border we stopped to register our credit card at the Easytoll machine which is one of their ways of collecting fees for using the network, but in reality the number plate recognition cameras are unable to deal with the ... read more
