I am taking a 18-day car expedition with my Dad. We are trying to hit several national parks. This is the second extended "road trip" vacation we've taken together. This year I thought'd I'd blog about it to keep you up-to-date with our daily travel news.

Today we left our cozy cabin at Mammoth Hot Springs and got back on the road. Our eventual destination is Colter Bay Lodge in Grand Teton National Park but we are making a quick stop at Old Faithful Inn. We stayed here on our last trip and couldn’t resist stopping for visit at one of or favorite places! After retracing our steps in the lodge, we road our bikes around the big geyser basin. Then we watched a spectacular show as Old Faithful erupted with hot boiling water. My dad and I next got an ice cream cone and hit the road. When we got to Grand Teton National Park we checked into our nice quaint cabins, had a yummy dinner at one of the resturants and fell asleep after a long day.... read more

Day 12- Buffaloed This morning we got up at 5:30 to go look for some more wildlife! We didn’t see anything at first except for a few bison. Then as we drove around a corner we saw a car ahead that was stopped, we hoped they had spotted something. Then we got closer and realized that the animals that they had spotted were about 100 bison blocking the road, or on the side of the road. We got buffaloed again! Finally, we got through the bison after a 25 minute wait. Even the babies decided to block the road so we couldn’t really do anything! When we got by we drove for a while and then stopped and parked at a turnout where a lot of other people had stopped. There was a school group that ... read more

Day 11- Heading for the (Yellow) Stone! Today we spent the morning blogging so we got to Yellowstone National Park in the evening. Another reason for us being late is the buffalo. They were all over the road, it was crazy! As soon as one would cross another would decide to take the other guy’s job of blocking the road. It was actually really funny because they would just stand there oblivious to people’s discomfort! After we got through we finally made it to Roosevelt Lodge. It was named after President Teddy Roosevelt, because it is located in what was his favorite part of the park. We visited Yellowstone on last year’s road trip so we chose to visit just a few of our favorite places- like Roosevelt Lodge. The dinner was fantastic, we both had ... read more

Day 10- Great Faces, Great Places Today we got up, had breakfast, and went to Mt. Rushmore before the crowds got too big. We took some more pictures of the presidents. It is just as spectacular in the day as it is at night. We explored the visitor center and museum a little bit and then hiked the base of the mountain. It was really beautiful and sunny. On the hike you can stop at the sculptor’s studio. The sculptor’s name is G. Borglum, and he was a phenomenal sculptor. After the hike we went through the museum again and I got to blow up Mt. Rushmore! It was fun! As we were leaving a huge thunderstorm hit and everyone was running for cover. Then we left Mt. Rushmore, then South Dakota, and entered Devils Tower ... read more

Day 9- Four Faces Today we left Billings, Montana and headed for South Dakota! We drove for about an hour and then stopped at Little Bighorn National Monument, the site of General Custer’s last stand. We toured the visitor center and listened to a 30 minute narrative on the battle. The ranger was very knowledgeable and the talk was great. It was outside on a covered patio, and he was able to point to the sites where the different skirmishes occurred. After that we walked up to Last Stand Hill and viewed the memorial markers. We then hit the road and headed for South Dakota. After a long drive we arrived in time to check in to our motel and then drive up the road to Mt. Rushmore National Memorial! We went to the amphitheatre and ... read more

Day 8- This morning we got up a little early, ate breakfast, and then hiked around Swiftcurrent Lake. The lake is sort of narrow and long, but still small. The hike was very beautiful but the only wildlife we saw was some squirrels and chipmunks. There were still cute but not seeing any big animals was a little disappointing. After the hike we went on a bike ride to the small motel a mile from Many Glacier. It was a pretty bike ride but a short one. When we got there we walked around a little bit. Then we rode back. On our way back I spotted a Bald Eagle but it flew out of site before my dad could even get out the camera, but I saw it through our binoculars. When we got back ... read more

Day 7- This morning we got up at 5:30 so that we could go and see some wildlife. This time we got lucky, we saw a young black bear cross the road right in front of the car. We only got one picture because it ran away right after we took it. We didn’t see anything else except for some deer grazing in the grass. After that we left the spot we were looking for animals. We went to hotel and ate breakfast. Then we went on a boat tour. Our guide was really funny and told us stories about the town of Wateron. He spotted a grown black bear and they stopped the boat so that we take pictures of it. When we got to the other side of the lake we got to get ... read more

Day 6- Going to the Sun Today we ate in the dining room for breakfast and had the breakfast buffet. Everything was really good and we ate a ton! After breakfast we walked by the lake a little bit and bought some souvenirs in the gift shop. Then we got we got in the car and drove to the sun. Not really the road we drove on was called Going to the Sun. It is really nice and old it was built in 1932 and is still open for most of the year. There are lots of turnouts and picture spots and we stopped to take pictures at a lot of them. We took a lot of pictures and we even stopped to play in the snow for a while. Day 5- For today we booked a horseback ride and a boat tour. After breakfast we went on the horseback ride. I had a really fun time! Our tour was at 11:15 but I guess no one wants to go on a trail ride that early because we were the only people on the ride except for our awesome guide. Her name was Cassidy and she was really nice and talkative. She told us lots of stories about the horses at the stables and her own horses at home. She also taught us about different types of moss and pointed out some dead trees and the reasons they died. That took an hour and we had a lot fun. After saying goodbye to our guide we took a short lunch break and then headed down to ... read more

Day 4- Today we had a very filling continental breakfast to start our day. Then we hit the highway. We stopped at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho to take some scenic pictures when I got bit by a wasp! It was very painful but we bought some ointment to help the swelling. Then we got back on the road. Because of a road construction project we had to take a detour on a scenic route. It was very beautiful with pretty trees and magnificent mountains. There were a lot of ranches with stunning horses grazing in the grass. We cut across the panhandle of Idaho into Montana and drove through many little towns. Then we finally reached Glacier National Park and checked into Lake McDonald Lodge. It is right on the lake so we walked down to the ... read more
