Day 9- Four Faces
Today we left Billings, Montana and headed for South Dakota! We drove for about an hour and then stopped at Little Bighorn National Monument, the site of General Custer’s last stand. We toured the visitor center and listened to a 30 minute narrative on the battle. The ranger was very knowledgeable and the talk was great. It was outside on a covered patio, and he was able to point to the sites where the different skirmishes occurred. After that we walked up to Last Stand Hill and viewed the memorial markers. We then hit the road and headed for South Dakota. After a long drive we arrived in time to check in to our motel and then drive up the road to Mt. Rushmore National Memorial! We went to the amphitheatre and watched the nightly show. It was really cool. The ranger talked about Mt. Rushmore and also showed a video on the making of Mt. R and of the four presidents. After the video they sang the National Anthem and slowly lit up Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. It was amazing. They also had all the veterans in the audience come down to the stage. Then

This is the spot where General Custer fell. He is not buried there because he was buried at West Point.
they had a Boy Scout troop (from Iowa) come and take down the flag. Then the ranger had all the veterans come up touch the flag, say their names, and the branch of service they were in. After we finished up our dinner we took some last pictures and then drove back to our motel for a night’s rest.
