This weekend one of my best friends from high school came to visit, which was super lovely! On Friday, after picking her up from the airport, we ate food and then promptly went to the pool. Later that evening we went into Vegas. I figured that there were at least a few things she should experience. So, we went to Bellagio, and she saw the r-diculousness that is that hotel, with its indoor gardens, etc. Then we watched the fountains. Beautiful, as before. However, this time, I wouldn't help but laugh at the irony of the songs they played. For the first one we saw, the fountains were going in time to "Proud to be an American". Ironic cause I'm standing there looking at this insane water display, in the desert, thinking how NOT proud I ... read more

This week I was once again in Barstow, tracking tortoises. It was an easy week, once again. It just gets done so quickly! Even though a lot of them had actually moved a bit this time, we still were done quickly. On Wednesday morning we got up early so we could look for missing ones for a bit before doing some tracking. Near the end of our search for lost ones, I looked to my left and there was a tortoise shell. Normally, this wouldn't mean anything. We come across quite a few shells and they are never ours. However, this one had a floy tag on it and part of a transmitter! So, it was one of ours. Sadly, it was dead. :-( Also, there are 2 missing in that plot and we aren't sure ... read more

The rest of my weekend was quite marvelous as well, although it was really Friday that made the whole weekend utterly spectacular. Saturday I slept in, as we were out late. When I awoke, it was to weather that made me question where I was. It was only in the low 80s, with 41% humidity, and dark rain clouds! Shocking. We decided we should take the opportunity to enjoy nature, and around 2pm all us interns went out to Red Rocks Canyon, which is on the other side of Vegas. It was quite a lovely day. The gift shop was pretty neat, even if it was in a trailer. haha. It was raining (say what?!?!) by the time we got out there but we didn't let it deter us. I couldn't believe I was outside, in ... read more

I don't even know how to begin to describe how amazing it was seeing LOVE. I guess I'll just start at the beginning and give it my best shot. Julia dropped Gloria and I off outside the Mirage a little after 5:30. We found the box office and picked up the tickets. They also gave us 2 tickets to the Revolution Lounge that included a drink special. Anywho, we had some time to kill so we wandered around Mirage for a bit. Spent some time watching people in the casino. AC, we stood by the craps tables for a bit. So confusing! We tried to figure out what all was going on but it was difficult. lol. Went to the bathroom before heading in, and let me just say, that was the nicest bathroom I think ... read more

This week I was once again in Barstow. We didn't have to be at the office until 7am and that was so lovely. Since it was me and Gloria and Ignacio that were going to Barstow, we had no car and so we just walked to the office in the morning. Headed out shortly thereafter and went straight to the house. Martin needed to get his GPS from the house. And drop off his kitten! Cause that's right! We had a cat in the house for the week! It was so lovely! This kitten is absolutely adorable... and a little bit crazy. :) Martin found him as a stray outside the Barstow house maybe a month or 2 ago. So anyway, we didn't head out into the field til after 11. So we were out for ... read more

Surprise!!!! I flew home last Saturday for a week and it was marvelous! Got into Philly around 10pm and by the time I got home I was still awake so I stayed up for a bit on the computer and talking to Emily, which was very nice. Sunday morning we headed down to Cape May! It was so nice seeing so much green as we drove down. I hadn't realized quite how much I missed woods until I saw them again. :) Also, I love Jersey and how every 2 feet practically there are local produce stands along the side of the road. Wonderful. I went with dad, we arrived a little after 2pm but couldn't check in yet. So I wandered. Went and got some scratch lottery tickets (I love that I lived in vegas ... read more

The rest of my night tracking was actually kinda exciting! One night a bat flew right past me! I was thrilled. Obviously. :) Then a pretty uncool thing happened, although it all turned out okay. During thursday's shift, I thought that one of my tortoises was dead. Which was odd because it had been fine 24hours early. But when I tracked to it on thursday it was flipped over. I assumed that since it was on its back and not moving at all, that it was dead. I couldn't get ahold of Sarah on the radio and so I wasn't sure what to do so I just left it. The rest of the night I didn't track it. Which saved me time because it was the furthest one out. When we were done I told Sarah ... read more

The rest of last week was spent in Barstow. I actually had to stay until Friday. Think they are kinda running out of things for us to do sometimes. Anyway, it wasn't too bad. Having the dog made it totally ok. :) We were basically finished on Wednesday but Thursday morning we all went out to plot 5 and spent nearly 2 hours looking for a missing tortoise. No luck this time though. Sad. :( Then Felicia Angela and I headed over to do plot 3. After that we were done for the day! Back at the house I just did more relaxing. Finished getting caught up on Greys Anatomy.... still not sure why I did that. Although it did start getting better towards the end of Season 5. And then I was crying hysterically at ... read more

On thursday morning last week we went out looking for one of the lost tortoises, that had been missing since march. We weren't expecting anything because, well, they have been looking for all lost tortoises for a while with no luck. So yeah. Emily and Erin and I are walking along, heading to where the tortoise was last seen, when Erin cries out, "I FOUND A TORTOISE!" we thought she was kidding. Until we realized she wasn't. There he was, 3238, sitting on the ground, a few feet outside of a burrow. And not just any burrow. The burrow that he was last seen in, back in March! It was very exciting indeed! But, we were thoroughly unprepared, cause we weren't expecting to actually find him. Had to stand on a hill (to get cell reception) ... read more

Hey! So, not too much to talk about but I'll at least write a little. :) Saturday night we went out into Vegas again... this time earlier just to kinda walk a bit around the Strip. We went to the Bellagio (which is INSANE) and wondered around inside and then watched the fountains outside (really neat. they time the fountains with different songs... very pretty). We then walked to the Mirage and wondered inside before realizing that what we were after, the so-called Volcano, was outside the Mirage. So then we went out and were able to catch the volcano in action.. it was very cool. Involved water and lights but then also actual fire! All timed to music, as with the fountains. It was fun. And, while wondering around both Bellagio and Mirage we got ... read more
