Had a truly wonderful Easter. After church, I ate lunch and then baked the amazing rosemary facaccia bread that Ingrid usually makes (since she was at work). It actually didn't turn out half bad. Mid-afternoon we went to Lauren's house to begin our easter celebrations. When we got there, we discovered that miss Lauren had made us Easter baskets! It was the most lovely surprise. =) We proceeded to sit out on her driveway and dye eggs! =) It was lots of fun... I can't remember the last time I did it. Brought back good memories. It was amusing, because while we acted like kids and dyed eggs, we were also drinking wine. We found this juxtaposition to be entertaining. =) After egg dying, Lauren baked fish and sauteed green beans and we warmed up the ... read more

Week 5 (yikes! how did that happen? I feel like I just got here!) was extremely long. Not entirely sure why, but it just seemed to drag on and on. The majority of the week was spent building nest barriers, and fixing nest barriers and other such physical work, rather than biology stuff. By wednesday it was getting pretty tiring. Both Ingrid and I just wanted to work with the cranes again! The nice thing was that Lauren understood that and she apologized that we had been doing so much of the same thing for days and that we hadn't really done anything with the cranes directly. But she also stressed the importance of the nest barriers and I get that. If they can help to save the lives of more of these precious Sandhill crane ... read more

My weekend was quite uneventful, except for Saturday, which was the first real festival of the season in my area. It was really awesome! But before I go into that, I will briefly mention another awesome aspect of the day. =) In the morning Ingrid and I met up with Lauren for breakfast at a restaurant in Ocean Springs that Lauren had recommended as a good place to get breakfast out. I had been craving an omelett ever since we went to IHOP and so that is what I got. It was wonderful! Soooo much food. 3 egg omelett (which i got with cheese tomato and olives), hash browns, bacon (which I gave to Lauren and Ingrid), and a biscuit. So tasty, and relatively cheap considering the amount of food. I was pleased. And the restaurant ... read more

This week started out well. After a frustrating time last week attempting to triangulate this one fake crane, I FINALLY successfully triangulated it and was able to home-in and find it. It was a little pathetic just how excited I was. =) Tuesday we worked on putting out posts around an area called Duck Pond, so that we can build a nest barrier there. It went pretty well, except that while trying to get the posts into the ground, both Ingrid and I popped holes in our gum boots. =( Now those are permanently our post-putting-in boots, and they are going to have to order us new ones to actually use most of the time. Whoops. Other than that it went well. We got a fair bit accomplished, although at the end we did go in ... read more

Still loving the job. Week 3 is coming to a close and as such, I am finding I have less to report so the blog posts may become less frequent. Perhaps only one or 2 each week. But we shall see. =) The majority of this week was spent practicing our radio telemetry. Scott put transmitters on fake cranes and stuck them in random places on the refuge for us to try to triangulate and then home-in on to find them. The first time I did this was extremely successful. My three points were so close to each other that they didn't form a triangle really... they practically all met at one point. So we just walked out there and found the crane right away. It was fabulous. I felt great. Since then, however, it has ... read more

INFINITELY better than Vegas. Let's just get that out there right off the bat. :) Saturday Ingrid and I drove to New Orleans to explore for the day. Lauren gave us directions and told us the general areas to go (and not to go) which was good. We got there a little after noon. Walked immediately to Jackson Square. It was just like I remembered it from when I went there with band in high school. Went straight to Cafe Du Monde and got beneits, at the recommendation of practically everyone (including AC). O.M.G. It was heaven. Sooooo delicious. And cheap! They give you a lot of hot, powder sugar covered delicious doughiness for only around $2. Amazing. Ate them overlooking the square. Then watched a pretty entertaining group of street performers. Then just walked around. ... read more

Thursday was great. After all the physical exursion of tuesday and wednesday, it was a much more chill day. Ingrid and I drove up to New Orleans to the Audobon center up there in order to pick up 2 sandhill cranes and take them back to the refuge, in the hopes that they will serve as foster parents. So lots of time in the car, which was fine by me! We got a tad lost on the way there, but end result was that we got it all sorted out and eventually made it there (took nearly 3 hours instead of 2. whoops!). The girl we worked with at the audobon place was super nice. She helped us load the cranes (in crates) into the truck bed and secure there. Then she let us have a ... read more

Another physically exhausting day. It was overcast in the morning so I didn’t bother putting on sun screen. The plan was to work on clearing the weeds near the fencing of one of the pens since it wasn’t supposed to rain until the afternoon. Took a while to find the weed-eaters and be shown how to use them, etc. Keep in mind my arms and legs were already sore from our day in the swamp on Tuesday lugging the fencing around through the water and constantly bending down to tie zip-ties. So the prospect of lifting a semi-heavy piece of machinery to clear away weeds was not so enticing. But we set to it. Had such trouble with the weed-eaters. Couldn’t get the one to start. Neither of us could get them to feed the thread ... read more

Today was an adventure, to say the least. Didn’t have to be at the office til 7am which was lovely. Ingrid and I went pretty much straight out into the field to continue working on putting up the fencing. The morning began as probably the warmest of any of the days we’ve been here so far. Which was lovely. I didn’t need any thermals and didn’t even need my sweatshirt. Considering how the morning progressed, I am grateful that it wasn’t as cold as some previous days have been. Anyway, we started working around 7:30 and were quickly into our old rhythm. We were getting lots done in a relatively short amount of time. About every hour we would finish a role of netting and have to walk back to the truck to get another. Pretty ... read more

Monday was a pretty easy-going day, so not much to report. 5:30am start... went to a different blind (no wet feet this time!). It was 15ft high so twas a bit precarious to get into but I succeeded without falling lol. I got to watch the sunrise and that was quite lovely. And I saw 12 cranes! Got to watch them for a few hours and was able to see most of their bands (I hope!). I feel that I am making progress. :) Late morning/early afternoon was spent working more on the fencing around the nesting area. It was so gorgeous outside! Realized pretty soon I will need to put on sunscreen. We found our rhythm last time so we were able to move quite quickly today, got a fair bit done Visiting retired Japanese ... read more
