So let's see. An update. Last weekend I didn't do much. Mostly just hung around the house or the pool. We did go into vegas on friday night and went to a place called the Freakin Frog. I really liked it. There was live music so we just sat and had a drink and listened to music that was pretty good. So it was fun. And more my speed. :) Then on monday began my week of crazy tracking. I was prepared for the worst but as it turned out, I didn't mind it. Maybe because we kinda lucked out on the schedule. Normally the majority of the shifts are 10 hour shifts. But because of the crazy heat, Sarah, the grad student who's research it is, decided that we didnt need to go out in ... read more

Hello again! So travels/lack of internet in the apartment (it’s a long complicated story… but eventually it got worked out) is my reasoning for why it took so long for me to post this blog. Anyway, I shall try to catch you up on what I have been up to. :-) Last week I was out in Gold Butte once again, looking for those elusive Gila Monsters. This time, they change the plan of attack a bit. We were still supposed to hike around the washes they are likely to be in, but we also had to drive around the roads in our area, just looking out the window for either tracks or the animal itself. I went out with Bryant, one of the staff members. We basically just drove around on Monday, spending soooo many ... read more

So, an update is in order I suppose. :) Last weekend I didn't do much. Kinda just hung out. We watched Life Aquatic.. which was.... interesting. lol. On Sunday I went to Goldstrike again, this time with Julia and Emily (2 of my housemates). It was just as fun as the first time, if not more. This time we went in some of the hotsprings and spent more time in the Colorado River. It was quite lovely. Oh, and we also saw a bat! In the middle of the day! Quite awesome, but very strange. It shouldn't have been flying around in daylight. Odd. On monday, I just had an office day. So unexciting. We moved some furniture, organized some journals, built a shelving unit, etc. Oh and I got to have my first experiencing driving. ... read more

Alright, here it goes. I shall try to cover my week, as best as I can. :) Ya'll may want to read this in parts, as it will probably be excruciatingly long and not all that interesting. haha. Monday: We met at the office at 8am. I was with one of the other interns and one of the staff and we were headed to Gold Butte, a fairly large desert area in Nevada around Lake Mead. We were the herp team... so we basically spent the entire week going to different points searching for Gila Monsters. We took a bit getting out and then we stopped to eat lunch at one area. At about 1pm we arrived at the first hike site. It was absolutely gorgeous. I think in total it was maybe 5km total. It ... read more

Hello again! Certain people have been demanding (or, asking politely) for another one of these things, but I was waiting until I had something exciting to report. lol. And now I finally do! So, on wednesday I was just in the office doing random things, mostly entering data for one of the projects they are doing with Joshua Trees. Many hours in front of a computer. Then on Thursday I went with a few others to one of our sites at Coyote Springs where they are doing research dealing with fire damage and what tortoises might eat if some of the vegetation is destroyed. So basically they have many different 10'x10' plots set up and they sprayed different pesticides in each, killing grasses in some and killing bushes in others, etc. Each area started with 4 ... read more

Hey all! Don't be concerned by the title of this entry.... nothing bad happened or anything. :) It is simply a reference to the fact that the opening line of the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas mentions Barstow CA, which is where I went for the start of this internship! :) Sadly, I did not remember this on my own... it had to be pointed out to me. I am failing at my Johnny Depp film knowledge... Anyway, the first few days have been incredible. On Sunday I just relaxed, talked a bit with my housemates, and spent a few hours lying out by the pool (because yes, this apartment complex has a pool and mini-gym and everything. craziness), which was lovely. It felt more like a vacation, with sun and palm trees and ... read more

Hey all! So I have arrived safe and sound in sunny Nevada! It was actually really gorgeous weather when I got here last night... in the mid 70s and breezy. Don't know what sort of weather today holds though. So, the plane ride was smooth and uneventful. Those of you wondering how Southwest is... I give it an A+++. The whole crew was super friendly, and the head stewardess was HILARIOUS. she had the entire plane cracking up. It was great. Plus, checking baggage is freeeeeeee! One possible down side, they dont even offer a meal. But, they had plenty of snacks and drinks. So just make sure you bring food for a meal and you will be set! :) Kay, my plug for Southwest is over now. hehe. Ya'll had told me what the Vegas ... read more

Hey! Greetings from New Zealand!! =) I have been loving it here as well. Arrived on the 8th with Kat and Brett. I had a lot of fun with them. We drove around. Went to the Waitomo glow worm cave on the 9th which was super cool. Drivng through the countryside was a lot of fun. =) Then we got to Turangi and on the 10th Brett and I hiked around Tongariro national park (around where mordor stuff was filmed!! ahhh!! hehe). It was so much fun, and we got to see mount doom! could i ask for more? We then drove through Taupo, stopping along the lake (omg it is so gorgeous!). We got to Rotorua and walked around. That is a pretty cool town. Built on top of geothermal stuff which is pretty awesome! ... read more

Last weekend (April 19-20) I went to Cairns! It was very exciting indeed. We got there saturday late afternoon and checked into the hostel... which was insane. It was HUGE and honestly, looked more like a hotel. The halls were long, the kitchen (on each floor) was INSANELY huge, there were tons of computers on each floor, the rooms were nice (own bathroom and shower!) and rooms had a balacony area. It was nuts. After that we kinda walked around for a bit, and then me and one other girl decided to get dinner at this Greek restaurant that we found. Omg i was in heaven. I had been dying for good food. and that is most definitely what i got. it made me very happy. =) Then just kinda hung out with people, walked around, ... read more

I realized that I never wrote about homestay weekends, which were two weekends ago after classes ended and before field research started. So I thought I'd do that now! I stayed wiith a really great family. Single mom Jodie Eden and her 8yr old daughter Ruby. Jodie's boyfriend John was also around a lot. They were all really really great. Jodie and Ruby live in Atherton in a cute little house, one story, nice and open floor plan, great veranda. Ruby was awesome. She talked a LOT and was just really cute. We hung out basically the entire weekend. We played on her trampoline (i forgot how much i love those. hehe) and in her "cubby" as they call it (like a club house). It was nice to just relax wiith a family. Eat breakfest on ... read more
