Sorry it has been a while! Been pretty busy lately. Last week we finished up classes and had our exams so as of friday, no more class! Which is really crazy. As of monay, our directed research projects started!! I got into Jess's DR, which is the one I wanted! i was really really excited. there are 10 of us in Jess's DR, working with bats. 9 people are in socio-econ and 6 are in the plant one. My closest friends are in socio-econ so i hardly ever see them, but i like all of the people in my group so it is all good. I am loving every minute of it. We are basically catching bats and then either processing them, or putting transmitters on them. We currently have two bats with transmitters on them ... read more

Hey all! So basically right after getting back from sydney we headed out on a 3 day field trip. On the way we stopped at Mossman Gorge which was a national park area... rainforest and water among all these huge rocks. It was beautiful and amazing. When we got to our accomadations (hostel in the rainforest called Crocodylas) we unpacked and stuff and then drove a few miles to Cow Bay Beach. sigh. it was amazing. sun, sand, shells, rainforest, blue ocean. i took a million pictures. walked along the beach. then laid in the sun reading. Just hung out after dinner playing cards and stuff. On the second day I got up for a bird walk in the morning. We didnt see much but it was still fun. Then we went to the Daintree Discovery ... read more

Heya! So, I thought I'd best update about my spring break. We had off from the 20-24 and I went with 2 people down to Sydney. I stayed with Erica in a hostel and Jessica stayed with her sister in a hotel that actually ended up being really close to where we were. It was AMAZING. On Thursday it took a while for us to get from the airport to the hostel. Once there we checked in and then met up with Jessica and went out to dinner to this pizza place. A very fancy pizza place. It was sooooo nice to eat good pizza. Finally. It made me very happy. =) Even if we were way under dressed for the style of the restaurant and even if it was quite pricey. We ate dessert there ... read more

Heylo! So this past week not much occured. just lots of studying and taking of exams, which i survived. lol. this weekend was really really great though. On thursday night a bunch of us watched The Holiday and then later on watched Beauty and the Beast. It was a good night. =) Then friday night we had craft night.. and we each did our own aboriginal style dot painting which was fun. After that watched Rabbit Proof Fence which is a movie about a true story of one of the Stolen Generation. It was good. Sad. Crazy. Yesterday we did another tree planting with TREAT. It had been raining so much all week that most of the pre-dug holes were full of water which was really annoying. I hope the trees live that we planted. I ... read more

Right so last entry I totally planned to write about what we did on monday as well. But I had to run out because the group was leaving for our 4 day field trip. haha. So yeah, sorry for the abrupt ending. Anyway, on monday, the day was pretty typical. Classes, field work, etc. But, the night was absolutely incredible. After dinner some of us went with Jess (ecology prof) to set up a bat trap on site. The trap itself was really cool. So about an hour and a half later jess came to tell us that we'd already caught 6 bats so we could go help her take them out and put down the trap if we wanted to. Which i did. The bats were soo small (all microbats). Once we got back down ... read more

Hey all! Sorry it has been a while. We've been busy with classes and field work and stuff and I've been trying to do my paper. Which I finished sunday night and then checked over last night and handed it in. Which was a relief. So, let's see. During the week I think we were just mainly having Forest Management Class and field work. Our field excerise for that class involved picking samples from many different trees, shrubs, vines, and weeds. Then we took different measurements such as flammability, leaf area, specific leaf area, wet mass, dry weight and some other stuff. Thursday we went on a little trip with Jess, the Ecology prof. We went around to different fragments of Mabi 5b forest and talked about stuff that we had learned previously in lessons. This ... read more

Hello all! I just wanted to write about this past sunday, because it was incredible. Sundays are our free days and this sunday we went to see a bunch of waterfalls. On the way to the first one, we stopped at the Atherton Tablelands lookout. It was incredibly gorgeous (i took lots of pics. Will try to put some up later). Once we got to the place with the waterfall, we had to walk about a little over 2km to get to it (including crossing a "creek" which was much more like a stream or small river due to rain. fun times). But it was all worth it. The waterfall (nandryoa falls) was spectacular. It is one of the tallest in queensland i think. And we could swim in it. Which was beyond cool. Swimming around ... read more

So, since I last wrote a lot has happened. The pics of everyone in the program are now up on the sfs web site in case anyone hasn't noticed that and would care to see them. =) Last saturday we took our swim test at Lake Eachem. It started raining basically as soon as we got there but we still swam and it was kinda fun. The water was warm and it looked really gorgeous seeing the rainforest bordering the lake through all of the rain. At night I stayed at the center with a few people and we hung out and made rice crispy treats.. but with coco crispies and rasberry and vanilla marshmellows. It was interesting to say the least. =) Sundays are our free days so me and 5 others got up and ... read more

So on Thursday we had an introduction to all of our classes which was pretty cool, although I am finding it difficult to get back into the mode of doing school work. It is especially difficult to imagine doing homework and taking tests while being out in the rainforest. It just seems kinda wrong. I'm not the only one who feels this way, don't worry. =) But all of the classes seem really great and all of the profs are amazing. I am sooo incredibly excited for the ecology class, although it is definitely going to be the most work. Ah well. AC, next week we start taking AM bird walks and of course I thought of you. =) I have already seen some cool stuff. I keep seeing Sulphur Crested Cockatoos everywhere. They seem to ... read more

Hi Everyone! Sorry it took me a little while to write an entry. The internet is very slow as I have told most of you, plus we are just really busy. However, I keep waking up way early so I've decided and I can try and write stuff then, for as long as this early rising lasts. Australia is amazing. The rainforest is so incredibly gorgeous! The minute the plane landed in Cairns I was in love. I think it was also nice to see green again, after leaving our dreary winter with the leafless trees and everything. It has been in the 80s I guess for the past few days. Really hot in the sun but usually OKish in the shade. I have been surprised that it was fairly sunny the first few days. Yesteday ... read more
