price of diesel
When we went last year diesel was around 99 kuna I must admit I had a shock when they asked for 44 kuna to go over the bridge to Krk until I realised it was less than £4. Main roads OK and some excellent motorways which are relatively empty. We fell in love with Croatia , the people are very friendly , the young speak good English and the scenery is absolutely stunning. Also a little undiscovered. We wished we had got to Mostar but we had trouble with insurance for Bosnia for the motorhome. I dont know what hire car companies are like but there is a big difference between Croatia which is on its way to becoming part of the EU and Bosnia . We had to pay rather a lot for two weeks insurance to allow us to drive over the Neum corridor between the north part of Croatia to get to Dubrovnik. That little bit of coast which was given to Bosnia causes drivers awful problems. You either pay an arm and a leg to go through or you go through without insurance. And we were told they wouldnt insure the motorhome if we went into Bosnia. There is a ongoing problem off piste with land mines from the 90's war.

Thanks for the gas prices...
and as for insurance, the rental car company insurance covers Montenegro and Bosnia, but none of the other countries eastward...Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania. I'll make sure my company covers the countries I am traveling to. Your previous visits to this area have inspired me, and I look forward to reading about your September trip.

Nipping out...
This will be my first extended trip that I've been on my own in many years. It will definitely be a new experience!

your trip
Sounds good Bob ,the roads are not very good over there particularly narrow and windy on the way to Orebic and Korcula. But the views stunning. We didnt think much of Rovinj , Zadar is stunning. We are off to Croatia in September again but this time taking in Cres, Krk and Mali Losinj. Cheap country with cheap fuel .

Thanks for the road information...
and since you mentioned it, how much does gas cost?

We love the planning phase
I'm sorry Linda has decided to send you out on your own but sprucing up the house sounds nice also. It does sound like you've booked the perfect time of year. We are eager to go to that part of the world so we will use your blogs as our guide.

Love the planning...
would you care to join me!? I'll have space in the rental car.

Planning...
Bob that sounds like a fantastic trip. I have no tips to offer as we haven't ventured into that part of the world yet, however I can't wait to read about your trip! Happy planning.

I'm on a roll...
booked all my rooms for about $20/day less than I had budgeted!
20th June 2014

I would love to join your travel meet...
please provide the details for when and where you meet.

Visit
I saw that you were in Colorado and thought the same thing. I am part of a travel meet up that perhaps you could attend some time when you visit your daughter. If not, we could of course meet for a drink and share stories. I would like that very much!

wow
Just read your profile info and WOW. So . impressive. And i do not think your goal is anywhere near trivial. We must set goals to look forward. If I didn't i would never have made it to all 7 continents or just recently hit my 44 th country. I'm afraid my goal is even loftier. ...i want to visit every country. We'll see. Thanks so much for sharing and i look forward to reading more.

What a great way to capture your family history
Wow, Bob, I'm a genealogist but never thought of doing anything like this to record family history. What a great job. Thanks for sharing. Judy

I think anyone would need another holiday after that hectic schedule through Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Panama... and what better place to recuperate than Cancun! It was my first destination outside of Europe and because of that it will always bring a smile to my face... It sounds like you had a great tour, Peru and Bolivia are definitely up on my to do list... Some day hopefully! Hope you're feeling better! Regards

I like your title -- it's so true that sometimes, especially after a long "vacation" -- you need an extra break with actual lounging (white sand beaches don't hurt) to get the energy to do whatever comes next. After yours and everyone else's recommendations on Peru, we are itching to go someday soon! Thanks for taking us with you on your travels~~ :)

Meeting Tara...
Sounds like you and Linda had a lovely catch-up with Tara. Moon Valley looks very much like parts of Cappodocia in Turkey - loved the photos.
19th May 2014

Believe me, Moon Valley was nothing like Cappodocia in Turkey...
it's very much smaller area, and it's hard to get a picture of anything without including board walks and other man made stuff.

Nice Spot To Kick Back
You need a place like that one every now and then. Looks great, but a pity that you aren't feeling the best. I agree with you about the new wonders of the world, although I would put the Taj Mahal on any list. We enjoyed Chichen Itsa but there were heavy crowds when we were there. It would have been better with a few less but I guess that is pretty normal for such special places.

El Castillo at Chichen Itza

A fine, final holiday!
After your whirlwind tour of Peru and Bolivia and the snow back home, I'm so glad you had a nice warm, sunny rest at your gorgeous resort! I'm sure I'll never stay at such a luxurious spot, so it was lovely to enjoy it vicariously through you. Too bad they've roped off the temples. I climbed up the back of the Pyramid of the Sun when I was there on the Equinox one year to see tens of thousands of people looking up at me--the Mayan priestess. I guess those days are over.

El Castillo at Chichen Itza

I learned that Mayans had priestesses...
but glad that you weren't there to sacrifice anyone. That must have been amazing to be the center of attention of all those people on such an iconic spot. The reason the ruins are now off limits is because of the misbehavior of a few tourists...chipping souvenirs and spraying graffiti...ruining it for everyone...pardon the pun.

Perfect place to relax
Amazing white sand beaches. We've been to Tulum and long to go to Chichen Itza. Lovely photos! Hope you are feeling better soon.

The antibiotics are starting to kick in...
and I can notice some progress to getting well. I hope that I'm well enough tomorrow to teach Junior Achievement to 4th graders.

It's starting to sound like Tara is a symbolic monument herself who must be visited for any bloggers who go to South America. ;) I love these mini-TB gatherings. I'm finding the comments regarding the reciprocal visa charges especially interesting -- it seems like the golden rule is being held up like a mirror to the US and the reflection is spreading quickly. I also hope that the US government reconsiders the consequences and benefits of its strict and often biased visa regulations. Loving the blogs (and the new profile photo -- lovely)!
18th May 2014

I hope TBers continue to meet Tara...
her three month visa in Bolivia is about up so she is headed back to Peru for awhile. She knows AnnaAdventuring in Aeriquipa. She also met Saritrace while in Bolivia. What she really needs now is a TBer who can bring her a replacement camera from the States (or passing through any duty free airport on the way to Peru. She thought that she might see Dancing Dave and Denise at the end of the year either before or after they visit their son in Toronto. They are also planning to visit us, but I'm not sure she wants to go that long without a camera. Aren't you due for a vacation!!!???
