Wonderful memories!
What a unique idea to do this. I am visiting Brussels for the sixth time, next month, to attend the Andrea Bocceli concert in Antwerp for my birthday. We stay with our close friend and my wife's cousin who is a diplomat based there. I can't get over the idea of your approach. It must be fun to go over these accounts with your family.

Thanks for your comment...
Enjoy Brussels...again!

Well, here goes...
Dear Bob and Linda, You guys have certainly been around the block! I admire your stamina and hope that mine is equal to reading all about your travels from an armchair. Any chance of adding San Miguel de Allende to your agenda? This is not a plug, because we are usually well-booked up, but we do run an air b&b that might interest you. Just google: Casita Mimosa San Miguel de Allende. You might decide that this town and nearby Guanajuato deserve to be seen and experienced. If you can find someone to hang out with Bonnie, maybe Linda can come with you?

Well, here goes...
I Googled your AirBNB...it is so beautiful! I'll have to check airfares, etc. and will add it to my list.

My Dad visits with his old Chinese congregant and family

All things Tibetan. Bob, from the spelling of your name, you are the son of William D. Carlsen, correct?
You may or may not know that I am working on a history of missions in and around Tibet, focusing on C&MA as well as other missions. I would love to talk with you some time. I love the photos and would like to use some of them for the book. You may have heard from Kristin Rollins about this project that I am working on. I finished last year the new biography of A. B. Simpson, "A. B. The Unlikely Founder of a Global Movement." Blessings, Dave Jones

Scottish Roots
Wow, sounds like another great trip in the making, combining travelling with family history research and pilgrimage - sounds perfect! 😊 And wow, 23rd cousin five times removed - who'd have thought it?! 😊

Roots
Tracing the family tree is fun and timely. Glad you have this trip planned. I'm glad Linda has found someone acceptable to stay with Bonnie. That is important. I'm going to add those books to our reading list. Have a great time planning.

Reading list..
Do you have Scottish ancestors, too?

Bagpipers at Glen Coe on our second visit to Scotland in 1980

In search of one's roots
Your investigations and determination are impressive as usual Bob, but do not forget to have some downtime and smell the roses to ensure your trip is with the breeze not into a headwind. Enjoy the planning and I look forward to hearing how it goes.

Good advice...
does heather have a pleasant scent? As for pace, I will be averaging less than 100 mi/day, with one day only 33 miles. We will also end up in Edinburgh for three days.

Fellow traveler
I am glad to see that I am not alone in planning and booking trips well in advance. I bought a plane ticket for my April 2020 Philippines/Japan trip back in August. September 2020? That's great! Now you have the whole year to research/plan/anticipate. I'll be particularly interested in hearing about how you find Iona.

Thorough!
Gee Bob, you really have this planned with detail that I could only dream of. I hope to read more of your travels. I’m a bit disappointed that you only traced Linda’s ancestry to 1580; I can’t go back more than about 5 generations, and have an Irish background. You’ve done well there. It must be hard to visit places you’ve never lived in but it’s a good problem to have. Get out there Bob, have a great journey of discovery, and it’s always better with loved ones.

Planning a trip is half the fun!
Planning also helps reduce the cost of a trip. However, I always have a Plan B, C, D...

Pilgrimage and Old England
I love reading your writings on my country, as seen as a tourist. It really is a beautiful country. I very much like your way of doing a pilgrimage also, probably the way I would do it as well. I too believe the horse tried to kiss you, not bite! 😊

The Old Way

We are hiking for a week this summer
We are actually hiking for a week this summer. We will start in Canterbury and walk towards Rome. We will stop hiking somewhere in northern France. Perhaps we will continue the hike som other year. We are hiking because we enjoy it. /Ake
