Geo: 40.7492, 14.5007Bird says we should offer a word of warning-there are 26 pictures of Pompeii. Should there be an abnormality with your brain making you not nuts about Roman history, you may want to skip this blog. Of course, we know all of you are normal, thus being as nuts about Roman history as HP.Today we hopped a train to Pompeii. Thirty minutes later we were induced to take a two hour tour, which was good according to Bird. After the tour we struck out on our own for an additional couple of hours. As you know, Pompeii was buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD thus preserving for us a complete Roman city. Actually, there were two, Herculaneum suffered an identical fate, but Bird could only tolerate one. This was another long day with much ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples October 16th 2015

Geo: 40.84, 14.2529We'll start with a word of warning. Bird says should you not be as enamored with Rome as HP, this may become a bit tiresome. HP retorts who could not be? So, lets chat about the museum in Naples. A very rich Pope in the 16th century collected a ton of Roman art, and after Pompeii was discovered in the 18 century, the works from Pompeii were added to the collection he previously passed to his heirs. The museum is essentially the Pope's collection and works from Pompeii and Herculean.HP was in Roman heaven, while Bird was just there. Just to think about what was setting in Roman living rooms, kitchens, etc. was ecstatic for him. Wow. He knows everyone will be glued to the pictures as he was taking them. They will follow. How ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Tivoli October 15th 2015

Geo: 41.9636, 12.7983Today's adventure occurred in Tivoli. We hopped in the car, taking our lives in our hands with Rome's drivers, and went to see Hadrian's Villa. As we expected, this has been the worse for wear after 2,000 years, but the immense size remains. This is not one villa, but has multiple baths (the Romans sure loved them), banquet and reception areas, even two libraries, a hospital, among many other things. The amount of building at least equals Diocletian's retirement home in Split. This is mostly ruins, sort of like what would happen to our buildings without maintenance for a couple of thousand years. Actually, ours would look far worse.Okay, this is our last day in Rome. We leave tomorrow for a brief stop in Naples before landing on the Amalfi Coast for four days. Actually ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome October 14th 2015

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823Took our show on the road today and visited the Appian Way and the walls of Rome. Alaric in 410 breached the wall but Attila was unsuccessful decades later. The section of the wall we viewed was built along a hill with the interior thus being a good deal higher than the outside. Made it more convenient for soldiers to defend. The wall was constructed in the 4th century BC and repaired in the 3rd century AD. As you will see in the pictures it is rather massive being eleven feet thick and twenty-six feet high. It ran for twelve miles. Yes, that is a lot of brick. We went into the top area of one of the gates (San Sebastian), and snapped a couple of pictures of the Appian Way running under it. As ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Ostia October 13th 2015

Geo: 41.7308, 12.2808After repairing the washer (you don't want to know) we made a late exit from our apartment, rode the train for a half hour and arrived in Ostia Antica. This was Rome's port. All of her supplies and food arriving by sea went through here. And during the Imperial period, Italy did not grow enough food to feed herself, so imports were a major concern. We were surprised how far the port was from Rome. Like we mentioned a half hour train ride. Everything arriving here must then be transported by animal drawn carts to a city of one million people. Poor oxen.Save for the marble, which folks during the middle ages stripped from the buildings, the city has come to us in quite good shape. The reason is that not long after Rome fell ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome October 12th 2015

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823Today matched yesterday for the weather. Just a beautiful fall day. Left a bit later today than usual as we wanted to be at the Colosseum in the late afternoon and evening, yet Bird notes "we were still gone nine hours". Our first stop was the Pantheon, which may have the most intact interior of the Roman buildings, likely thanks to the Church converting it to a church. Even so, some Pope stripped the exterior marble. Following this we took a mile or so walk, which Rick Steves labels "The Heart of Rome Walk" before arriving at a Metro for our trip to the Colosseum. As with other Roman buildings, a good deal of thievery went on here eventually ending in either the 15th or 16th century. This arena seated fifty or so thousand ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome October 11th 2015

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823What a difference a day makes. Simply beautiful today. Began without a cloud, while a few drifted in late in the day. Temps perhaps in the low seventies and low humidity. We spent over five hours walking about the Forum and Palatine Hill. Legs sore but well worth it.The Forum is very impressive, but you have to remember this is two thousand years ago. Some deterioration occurs in that time. We may suggest what would your house look like without a roof for over a thousand years. So don't be critical of it not being pristine.Tomorrow we enter the Colosseo (Coliseum), the Pantheon (Temple to all gods), and take a walking tour of Roma. But tonight, its all Falcons.... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome October 10th 2015

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823How about some sympathy? It rained all day, and we were outside waiting or walking for a good portion of it. But once inside we were treated to repeated amazing sights. We previously thought the British were a larcenous group, but they can't compare with the Popes. These guys not only stole stuff from ancient Rome but everywhere else as well. We'll show you later. The crowds were awful. After we decided on the Vatican Museums, Bird discovered the worse day of the week for the Vatican is Saturday, besides that don't go when it rains. We did both as we thought being in a museum would be dry. Apparently that is the thinking of other folks as well. But we made it through.Let us tell you the Vatican is not comprised of St. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa October 9th 2015

Geo: 43.7161, 10.3966Did we tell you we were stopping by Pisa today? Christy IV only made one small error. Pretty good for her, so we drove in and out rather easily. Bird is now complaining that there has been no mention of her new best friend, the wine guy. Three doors down from our apt in La Spezia there was a "loose wine" shop where people could bring any sort of empty bottle and fill her up and rather good prices. Yes, of course, we have a picture.By the way we are now in Rome. Will be here for the next seven days. We'll keep ... read more

Europe » Italy October 8th 2015

Geo: 44.1097, 9.81355Okay, we went to Genova as promised, but with periodic rain and navigation problems, we were unable to make it to Chris' house. We did see more mopeds than one could ever imagine. They had their own parking areas and were parked four deep for literally a block. And we were later informed they are less popular than in the past. Now the main event. The entire day on 7 October was spent in a couple of towns in Cinque Terre. Could find no evidence of Romans here, but do know at least some of the towns were founded at least by the 11th century. Each has a castle and watch tower to spot Muslim pirates. Poor Italy, they suffered from pirates after the barbarians took North Africa from the Romans in the early fifth ... read more
