Geo: 45.863, 8.5441Okay folks just to prove we were not lying about the roads, we took a few shots on the way to Lake Maggiore. You can apologize after viewing them.Arrived at Lake Maggiore early and drove around a bit. The weatherman (or woman) should be fired for missing this forecast so badly. It is simply a beautiful fall day. Temp in the mid sixties.Poor 'ol Dawgs are in the dog house, and the Jackets have no stinger left. We expect our Birds will assuage Georgia pride tonight. Go Falcons!... read more

Geo: 45.9458, 9.19024After all the beautiful weather we have enjoyed, it finally turned on us. We were not able to ride a ferry to towns we wanted to visit. Instead we had, for us, an unusual lunch (HP had three small fish that were caught in the lake, and Bird had Buckwheat stuffed Ravioli with the stuffing consisting of Lake fish and Cheese). HP preferred hers, but she refused to share. The lunch, and sitting in the apt complaining of the weather, took us until 2pm. Something of a break then ensued. At least the rain ended. Too late for a ferry, so we drove ostensibly to Bellagio. Actually the navigator sent us in the opposite direction. Have we told you about the roads around this lake? They are bit larger than a normal lane yet ... read more

Geo: 45.9877, 9.26198Left the Gasthaus in Munchen bright and bushy tailed just after eight. The wonderful innkeepers presented Bird with two quite cute and large cookies from Oktoberfest (the innkeeper went the night before, and sheepishly admitted he enjoyed himself). She plans on making the trip back to the U.S. with them for M1 and M2 (we'll see if they last). After trading cars we traveled through Garmisch to Austria and finally Italy to Lake Como. The trip was to last six hours and ended up a bit over seven, mostly due to the navigator (Bird). There were also a couple of stops for pictures. Some of the topography and roads in Austria and Switzerland are amazing. After driving it our memory returned of seeing it before, but nonetheless remains amazing. Tunnels back to back with each ... read more

Geo: 48.1391, 11.5802More than we were hoping for. A mixture of carnival (rides and games of all kinds), stalls selling all kinds of German food imaginable (sausages, pretzels, pommes frites), other stalls selling souvenirs (beer steins, coffee cups, keychains and t-shirts), and then the beer tents. They are really not tents but permanent buildings with a canvas ceiling (thus tents) that seat between 4,500 and 10,000 and are all differently decorated. There are 14 large tents and 20 small tents. We visited about 10 of the 14 large tents and no small ones. No, we did not have a beer at each tent. A beer is a liter severed in a large glass stein. We shared two (more beer than we have drank in a day in many years) and some German sausages. In fact, food ... read more

Geo: 48.1391, 11.5802Okay folks there is one stupid man on this trip. We elected to avoid both Munchen and the autobahn and instead traveled through some Bavarian farmlands and briefly visited a beautiful lake with mountains and mist. Then some idiot deleted all of these during the visit to Nymphenburg Palace. He attempted to make excuses to Bird about the camera being at fault, but she ignored his pleas only looking for his rear to kick again. He deserved it!!Well okay, we do have some pictures of the Nymphenburg Palace. This is new for us, but as big as it is one would think we would have visited. Worse than that, it has never been on our radar. This palace reminds us of an attempt to emulate Versailles. There are indeed grand aspects, especially the grand hall ... read more

Europe » Austria September 29th 2015

Geo: 47.8, 13.0333Our entire day was spent in the old town of this ancient city (Romans were here) and the fortress that was begun in 1077 says Bird. The fortress was enlarged over the centuries with the imposing structure we presently see. There has never been a successful assault, although they surrendered to Napoleon without a fight. Inside this place is a maze of rooms and towers that left two tourists constantly lost. We were here just over forty years ago, one would think we would remember our way around.Other sights are essentially the churches, which are not surprisingly large and ornate. A very interesting sight is a restaurant where Charlemagne ate during the ninth century. While the fortress proved itself to much for HP and Bird's sense of direction, the old town left us completely bewildered. ... read more

Geo: 47.8, 13.0333Packed up from Croatia this morning and drove to Salzburg. On the way we stopped at Lake Bled, Slovenia. Don't really know anything about it except the lake is very pretty and a monastery was built on a small island during the middle ages. The pair of airheads then took the autobahn to Salzburg. Airheads as the countryside was beautiful, and we were on the Austrian autobahn, not German with some sections having no speed limit. Nonetheless the speed limit here was in the low to mid 80's. Even so we took our lives into our hands a couple of times and pulled over for a shot. Temp continues to change. During the drive we saw snow on the mountain tops and encountered a temperature of nine a couple of times. Okay so it was ... read more

Geo: 45.2367, 13.9386We drove to the interior of Istria to see the gorge that inspired Jules Verne to write "Journey to the Center of the Earth". After seeing it all we can say is Jules was a very easily inspired person. And Frommer gave it three stars! Sorry, no picture. In fact, we only include one of an olive grove. Now for the sad part. We must leave Croatia tomorrow, and our route will take us by Vicki and Carol Ann's old stomping grounds in the former Northwest of Yugoslavia. The Croatian people are a very pleasant lot. Invariably with a smile and quick to assist. Most of their country is rugged, doesn't lend itself to agriculture, but beautiful and extreme. In some contrast to much of the country Istria, which is a triangular peninsula in the ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria » Porec September 26th 2015

Geo: 45.2296, 13.6088Took a day trip to both Porec and Rovinj. Bird labels this a "down day". Sure was after yesterday. The highlight, we imagine, was a Byzantine Cathedral, but even that didn't seem especially impressive. It was built in the fifth Century, perhaps after Justinian reconquered Italy, and we image this portion of land to Italy's east. While taking pictures over the water of Porec we were pleased to hear one of Doozer and Baby Bird's favorite songs-Cotton Fields. We also enjoyed seeing extensive plantings of grapes and olives. Perhaps Italy is better known for each, but they grow their share here. And on the way back to Pula we stopped at a roadside stand (there were a great number) and purchased a small bottle of Grappa.... read more
