Europe » Germany » Hesse » Frankfurt October 26th 2015

Geo: 50.0924, 8.68195It is 4pm and we are sitting in our hotel room composing the last blog before catching Delta home in the morning. Frankfurt is a beautifully picturesque town (oh what a lie that is), but we do have a couple of shots from our window of the Main River, which is cute. By the way, our hotel, although not four stars like Innsbruck is markedly superior and cheaper. When in Innsbruck avoid Sailer, but in Frankfurt Ibis is a good choice. We departed Rothenburg before nine this morning (quite early for us) and drove to Viernheim where we were entirely unable to locate anything remotely resembling our old apartment. So we abandoned this effort and drove along the tram line we used to take into the army facilities, and bingo we discovered old army housing ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Rothenburg ob der Tauber October 25th 2015

Geo: 50.3118, 11.7712Our last actual tourist day, although we may attempt to locate our old apartment in Viernheim (old is the operative word as it was 43 years ago) on the way to Frankfurt tomorrow. But today is Rothenburg, Germany. This place is much larger than we anticipated. We thought we visited it in the "old" days but likely not. In this walled city we drove inside the gates as our Gasthof was as downtown as possible. The mood was Christmas as it was chilly and the typical German overcast day. The decorations about town were Christmas colors. We entered many shops, especially devoted to Christmas. The ornaments were unfortunately outrageously expensive or likely made in China. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the town. Now for a tad of history we learned today. Rothenburg was actually a quite large and ... read more

Europe » Austria October 24th 2015

Geo: 47.2627, 11.3947After a drive through Northern Italy we arrived at Innsbruck. The entire drive was effected on the autostrada for a total toll of 33.10 Euro or close to $37. (the dollar strengthened a bit over the last day or so). But my gosh that was much more than burning their $6. plus gas. Bird is quick to interject, "however it was beautiful mile after mile", and indeed she is correct (for a change). This is the first time on a four lane limited access highway that we have been treated to such extended and beautiful scenery. Unfortunately the photos do not adequately capture the colors and depth, so partly you will just have to trust us, difficult as that is.We arrived somewhat before four. After checking in etc. we left for a walking tour of ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Siena October 23rd 2015

Geo: 43.3187, 11.3305Today was Siena. A rather nice town, certainly better than San Gimignano but no Florence. Much bigger than we expected, yet again not close to Florence. New information for us Siena was a bitter rival and equal of Florence for 400 years, and defeated them in at least two major battles. Eventually Siena succumbed, thus it is a bit of a time warp for us today. Bad for them, good for us.We know this will profoundly surprise all of you, but the primary attractions here, this being a medieval town, are churches. We have seen better and worse. Bird is a bit more impressed with the churches than HP (suppose he is upset there was nothing Roman in town). Everything here was medieval. Even after the Renaissance, they continued to paint two dimensional in ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » San Gimignano October 22nd 2015

Geo: 43.4703, 11.0438They label this medieval walled hilltop town the "Tuscan Manhattan", and you will soon see why. From a distance we assumed San Gimignano would be an exciting place to visit. However, initial appearances can be deceiving. All total we spent about three to four hours here and did perhaps one hour of sightseeing. The remainder was spent finding a place to park and eat, the latter including each of us greedily consuming a gelato from the best ice cream shop in the world with awards to prove it. Yes, the ice cream was good.As for the rest of the visit, Bird labels it "just okay", which translated means none-to-good. We took maybe one or two adequate pictures but will burden you with seven. Tomorrow we are off to Siena.... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence October 22nd 2015

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Seems like we have saved the best accommodation for last in the Tuscan town of Poggibonsi. It is a wonderfully restored historic building with tile roof and exposed wooden beams supporting it. Fireplace, silver service and Tuscan antique furniture are present. Price certainly not exorbitant as after all this is Bird and HP. We are well pleased.Okay now for Firenze (Florence). We have never been here before, resisting the place as little more than a pretentious stuffed shirt. Oh, what an error. The place is wonderfully beautiful. The Renaissance was born in Firenze, and more art from that period is here than anywhere else (at least we are going to say that). For us the highlight of the day was the statue of David. Seems folks consider Michelangelo's masterpiece to be the Pieta in the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Orvieto October 20th 2015

Geo: 42.7165, 12.1116So, we drove north and are now in Tuscany. We stopped at Orvieto, which is an Italian Hill Town. There are many hill towns in Tuscany and Umbria, particularly the former. They were built during the middle ages as defensive structures due to the constant small time warfare and raiding. So, this massive Roman Empire is reduced to sibling squabbling. But there are attractive sights left for us. In Orvieto, the church is rated by some as the most beautiful in Italy. We do not disagree. Unfortunately for us they were engaged in restorative work on the exterior front. The inside was pristine. The church is rich with paintings and frescoes. In fact Mike (aka Michelangelo) reviewed the ceiling and wall art before painting the Sistine Chapel. Bird is also especially impressed with the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Capri October 19th 2015

Geo: 40.5509, 14.2429The weather cooperated, although a web site indicated there would be a deluge today. Only a bit of a sprinkle on the way home. So we took the train south to Sorrento, spent a bit of time there, and then a hydrofoil to Capri. The island is impressive, but we both doubt it rates the three stars everyone awards. What we have here is cantilevered houses and "streets" that are actually sidewalks. There is, however, a road, but we did not venture onto it. Our motors were leg power...again.The main sight for us was Tiberius' Villa (Bird is now complaining "it is not we"). HP is sure she is only kidding. Yet she continues, "the last picture is for me".After the last several of days, we concluded you folks deserve some mercy. There are ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Paestum October 18th 2015

Geo: 40.4238, 15.0078Sorry, the experience Bird says was nowhere close to the title. We drove the Amalfi Coast to the Greek City of Paestum where even tight wad Rick Steves says don't drive yourself. Actually, we considered his advice but couldn't find a taxi for the two hour drive. So we just enjoyed ourselves! We did, however, click way too many pictures, and we seem to be enjoying them more so including additional ones for you poor unfortunate recipients. The drive was not as harrowing as Lake Como, perhaps as we have become a bit accustomed to Italian drivers. Nonetheless, the damn motorcycles wore us out. They would pass on hairpin curves and expect cars to move out of the way, although we were bigger. We concluded driving on this road was simply their Sunday thrill. ... read more
