Took our show on the road today and visited the Appian Way and the walls of Rome. Alaric in 410 breached the wall but Attila was unsuccessful decades later. The section of the wall we viewed was built along a hill with the interior thus being a good deal higher than the outside. Made it more convenient for soldiers to defend. The wall was constructed in the 4th century BC and repaired in the 3rd century AD. As you will see in the pictures it is rather massive being eleven feet thick and twenty-six feet high. It ran for twelve miles. Yes, that is a lot of brick.

We went into the top area of one of the gates (San Sebastian), and snapped a couple of pictures of the Appian Way running under it. As for the Appian Way, this road continues in use. We drove on it even though it was constructed in the 5th century BC. Imagine one of our roads lasting even a fraction of that time.
