Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Monistrol de Montserrat July 5th 2016

Today we head out a day trip to the Benedictine Monk retreat at Montserrat which offers you some of the most spectacular mountain views of Catalonia. We took the cable car from the base of the mountain up to the Monastery which is 1350m up at a 45degree angle at a speed of 18km per hour with fantastic view of the valley and the mountain from all sides. Not only is Montserrat Monastery of significant religious importance for the black faced Madonna but the natural beauty of the surroundings is breathtaking. After visiting the Basilica and town we then take another cable car (funicular) to the top of the mountain were we took a walk out to visit one of the 6 small chapel’s all the mountain ridge and to view the unusual rock formations. Another great day walking the streets, eating and drinking, the goal was to go to Carrer de Bhai were the street is full of Pintxos bars. Could so get use to this life. The first stop was a coffee at El Nacional which is an old carpark building that has been converted to a wonderful area with bars and restaurants. This building also has the best toilets in Barcelona that everyone goes and photographs (so we did also). Finally, after a number of covert diversion by Senor Alberto (Alan), we finally got to the first Pintxos. We all selected a couple of pintxos and together with our beer had the first course. This was the mode for a couple of bars and we then decided we had our fill and proceeded home. The nights activities once ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Sant Pere de Ribes July 3rd 2016

Today we headed to Pineda de Mar for lunch and to pick up Rose’s cousin Alan who is hosting us for our time in Barcelona. After a great lunch of Spain Tapes (including a fantastic snail dish) we headed off to Alan’s place in the Old City area of Barcelona. The afternoon was spent walking the streets to some wonderful places like the old markets that is now a Cultural Centre and houses a fantastic archaeological site, Santa Maria de Maria basilica that was built in the mid 13th century and of course a visit to the port area to view the boats. We spend the afternoon and evening bar hoping trying the wonderful drinks and food. What a fun City.... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Roses July 2nd 2016

Today we leave the Pyrenees regional without seeing them due to rain. We have been told we will need to come back in winter as this is when you get the back view of the Pyrenees (I see another trip being planned). We headed back to the Gulf of Lion for a picnic lunch overlooking Port-la-Novella (man it is windy here) before we set off to cross the France / Spain border at Le Perthus. At least this time you know you are crossing the border as there are border patrol building but you do not have to stop. Tonight we are booked into a lovely hotel on the beach at Roses. Yes, Rose has a place name after her in Spain so of course we had to stay here. Roses is a lovely town approx. ... read more

Europe » France » Midi-Pyrénées » Foix July 1st 2016

Today we decided to stay close to home and visit some of the local attractions. As we are in the area of France’s leading underground tourism operators we decide we could not pass up the opportunity to check out one of the Grottos of France. We went on a 2 hour underground guided boat and walking tour to view the subterranean river of Labouiche, to view many stalagmites, stalactites, crystals, and waterfall on the 1500 metre journey of the river and reach a depth of 60 metre below ground. The temp of the cave is about 13-degree C which is wonderful on this hot day and the water was crystal clear what a shame we cannot go swimming. The waterfall flows into a pool with a depth of 3 metre and the speed of the water ... read more

Europe » France » Midi-Pyrénées » Foix June 30th 2016

After a wonderful walk of the Fontvieille village we headed off to cross the Rhone River at Arles which at first we could not understand why people would wont to travel up and down this river in barges as it was so small but 1km down the road we found the correct Rhone River which soon clear that up for us. Our main stop today was a wonderful couple of hours walking around Carcassonne Medieval City this is a beautiful city with much history. Carcassonne City and Canal du Midi are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and welcomes several million visitors every year but still feels quaint and relaxing. This area was first settled 1000 years before the birth of Christ. The current location of the Medieval City was settled in 6 B.C, the ... read more

This morning we started the day with a full English Cooked Breakfast at the local English pub (The Blue Lady great remendiation Clarke). This local English Pub was full of French housewives who come to the pub for English courses the publican is running, what a great we to attract the locals and they serve great breakfast with good coffee. We are travelling to Marseille for a look around and then on to Fontvieille in Provance for the evening. Marseille was a bit of a letdown after the wonderful coastal cities of Monaco and Antibes and was on par with Naples in Italy. But I must see Marseille harbour area must have more policemen on patrol than any other place we have been to, they were everywhere. After a walk around and lunch we head off ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Antibes June 28th 2016

Rose made the legendary decision that due to our apartment not having any A/C, fans or any wind flow and we both had not slept well, today we would rent an umbrella and loungers on a beach and sleep today. We planned to go to where the “private” beaches are which as we understand has businesses offering this service, but to the public. 30 Euros picked us a front row umbrella and 2 padded loungers for the day. As an added bonus unlike the rocky beach of Spotorno, this was a pristine white sand beach with only 3 steps from my lounger to the warm water, yes to those who are asking Rose had 2 swims today…A new record. After a late lunch and few more hours of sun worshipping we decided to head back to ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Antibes June 27th 2016

A little sad and excited this morning as we realise that today is the last day in Italy, yet excited that today is the first day in France. We head out of Spotorno and decide that Monaco for lunch would be a great start and then Nice before Antibes for the night. After the 100km drive and actually crossing the border in a tunnel we arrive at the turn off to Monaco and the steep descent back to sea level. Our plan was to find one of the many car parks and have lunch by the water. Once the Sat Nav said we are here we targeted a Car park and parked the Car. Our plan was complex, all road down headed to the sea, so that’s where we went. Scuttled by the recent F1 GP, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Spotorno June 26th 2016

Back on the road again and what a lovely day, we headed out on a cloudless and 30C day as we came through the tunnels to Genoa the temperature plummeted to 20 and rain was imminent. By the time we got to Spotorno the angry clouds were still there but the temperature had risen again and Rose was single minded to spend the afternoon sunbathing on the beach. After checking in the beach facing Hotel room (small, but accommodating) we headed across the road to lunch Alga Blu (Blue Algae) where we have a great lunch, a few Aperol Spritzers and water. Now to the beach where we got 2 loungers, 2 chairs and an umbrella for 20 Euros. On our second to last day of the Italian leg Rose finally went for a swim!!! There ... read more
