Today was a sad day in a way as we had to hand back our car which really does mean that this amazing trip is nearly over only 3 more sleeps and we are on the plane to Dubai and then home in 1 week, where has the time gone. Must say our wonderful car has served us well. We have covered 5950km in 4 countries and only got lost a half a dozen time. We will spend the next few days exploring Barcelona by foot and bus.... read more

Yes, the trip back to Barcelona was a back track of our trip north 8 days ago but as this country is so changeable this trip was still interesting. It is great to see all the agriculture active, the small country towns and as you get close to Barcelona all the industrial areas. This evening we meet up with one of Rose’s Spanish cousin for a late dinner (9.30pm), drinks and chat. So good to get to hear about life in Spain from a local.... read more

Europe » Spain » Aragon » Zaragoza July 13th 2016

Today we are heading back to Zaragoza on the trip back to Barcelona but before we left the La Rioja regional we spent a couple of hours at a medieval hilltop town of Laguardia which was original constructed in the 13th century. All the houses in this town have an underground wine cellar and therefore the subsoil of the town is completely hollow (no cars allowed in the area). After a walk around the town a trip up one of the wall towers we then took a tour of the San Pedro family wine caves with wine tasting in cave. Some of this family’s wine caves are 8 metres under the ground and which guarantees the perfect temperature, humidity, silence and darkness for the wine to develop.... read more

Europe » Spain » La Rioja » Haro July 12th 2016

Today we are heading to Haro, a small town in the Rioja wine region of Spain which is well known for their red wines, also because where is not much else to do in Miranda de Ebro. After a little look around the town we headed to the Bodegas (wine cellar) area of town for a tour and wine tasting at Gomez Cruzado Bodega. This was a great couple of hours with the tasting of 1 white wine and 4 wonderful red wines (and the tasting glasses where not small). After this we headed back over the bridge to the town for a lovely lunch in the sun of the town square. Then it was back to Bodega Roda for a look at their underground cellar and this time tasting of 1 red wine and a ... read more

Having made it to the Atlantic Ocean it’s now time to head back south to Barcelona, but first we headed along the coast to Bilbao. The only problem was the rain and clouds have rolled in and there were no sea views on the way to Bilbao, but the weather clear for a visit to the city for lunch and a walk around the city. After driving in along the river we got a great view of the Guggenheim Museum, what a great building it is like a sculpture itself. Today we parked next to the train station then walked across the river to the old city to view church of San Nicolas (the patron saint of sailors), Plaza Nueva where the people of Bilbao meet up to munch on Pintxos and the Cathedral of Santiago. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Basque Country » San Sebastián July 10th 2016

Today we had just a short 1-hour drive to the Atlantic Ocean and the city of San Sebastian but this time we had to get through a random breath test check point, we were OK with a reading of 0.00. The only difference to Australian and NZ check points are they have a policeman with the automatic gun at the ready (finger on the trigger) for people who try to do a runner, I guess its shoot first and ask questions later. The plan was to spend some time on the beach but the clouds rolled in, so it was a walk to the beach and port area with a late lunch at one of the wonderful seafood restaurants at the fishing port. After this we took an hour’s boat trip around the local bays then ... read more

Europe » Spain » Navarre » Pamplona July 9th 2016

Today was a very long day. On the bus at 5:50am to head into the city to get to our balcony to watch the start of the festivities at 8am. As we reach the city centre all we could see were steams of very wary tired and happy people leaving the city after yesterday’s celebrations and a well-oiled clean-up machine in full flight preparing the city for another onslaught of revellers today. The balcony we have booked is on the second floor at one of the bends mid-way through the course and we had to be there before 6.45am otherwise the streets are closed off. In a way just watching the people arriving at their balcony and the clean-up process on the street below of both rubbish and people was as exciting as the run. 8am ... read more

Europe » Spain » Navarre » Pamplona July 8th 2016

After a night of lighting, thunder and rain we wake to a clear morning and we are on the road to Pamplona and the festival of San Fermin. The drive today was great due to the lack of trucks for about 50km, they had their own road next to ours. We also drove through an area where on every ridge there was a wind farm, there was probably more Wind turbines than the whole of Australia & NZ together. We have spent the afternoon walking the streets of the old town centre taking in the atmosphere of a festival and get our bearings so we are ready for the big day tomorrow. Today’s great finds where the monument to the Bull Run which is a 11-metre-long bronze monument that shows 11 runners, 6 bulls and 3 ... read more

We started today with a visit to Mercado Central (local veg, fish and meat market) what a fantastic area to people watch these traders are so skilled we stood watch a man filet anchovies for a good 10 minutes and then it was on to watch a women cut schnitzels with a massive knife. Our next visit was to the Basilica Nuestra Senora del Pilar what a wonderful building both inside and outside. We even got to go up one of the many towers of the Basilica to get a wonderful view of the city and the roof. Europe » Spain » Aragon » Zaragoza July 6th 2016

Today we are heading out on the first leg of the Roberts/Nesdale tour of Northern Spain. We have travelled 3 hours northwest of Barcelona to Zaragoza which is halfway between Pamploma and Barcelona and is the capital of the Region of Aragon. During this drive we have travelled through ever changing landscapes from very cultivated areas and very baron area. Zaragoza is a city of over 2,000 years of history from the Roman, Moorish Jewish and Christian communities that have left their mark on this city. We have this afternoon walked the streets of the city and visit the Roman ruins, Palace Aljaferia, Plazza Nuestra Senora del Pilar then finished up with more walks of the city laneway and visiting many bars and restaurant enjoying the local tradition of tapas. What a great way to have ... read more
