Today is quiet day with only picking up our new Peugeot 3008 and driving to Terracina, about 120km from the Leonardo Di Vinci Airport. I am sure all of you reading this will have already experienced driving in Italy, but it is just the same as driving in India. 1 lane road is easy for 2 cars wide and the sign post says 90km speed limit but some drivers do 130km. All safe and sane we arrive in Terracina, a small town in the coast. After an ice cream on the beach, we drive up into the hills to our BnB for the night. The drive was eventful up the narrow road we had to dive into a driveway when a tractor flew down the road to avoid a head on. Once we arrived (even the ... read more

What a wonderful day in Rome today clear sky and the sun was out, they say it was 23C but felt like 35C. We did the Vatican today again we took a guided tour of the Vatican Museum – all that art and history in one building (in a way too much to take just walking around in haze). I am glad we took a guided tour otherwise we would have had to queue for hours in the sun. Was wonderful to see the famous Sistine Chapel and the stunning frescoes by Michelangelo. After you exit the Vatican Museum you end up in the Citta Del Vaticano what a beautiful church – must say was better than I excepted.... read more

Today we saw some of the classic Rome sights Piazza Venezia, Altare della Patria, Fontana Di Trevi and Piazza di Spagna. Unfortunately, the Spanish steps are under renovations but we found many other steps to climb... doh. We spent the afternoon doing a guided tour of the Colosseum and history of Rome – We had Rob, a wonderful Archaeologist student guide us through the beautiful Colosseum and to think they invented so much that we have today – lifts, stadium roofs and bottled sweat as an aphrodisiac. Then we had a lovely walk back to our hotel thought the Palatino and Roman Forum.... read more

Hi all, after some great service on Emirates flights we have now landed in Rome and find ourselves in the middle of a public holiday with all shops shut. Before we get there, I need to comment about the customs entering Italy. Our customs agent was talking to someone else on her mobile (headset on), she didn't even look up to check our passports were actually ours. Chrissy, I am sure she wouldn't last in the Australian Border Protection. Rose has always felt that the Taxi in Mumbai was the worst taxi she had been in until today. The driver sat on 140-150km 20ft off the back of the car in-front, and we still got passed by other cars. Rose has dictated that I will stay right and restrict myself to the posted speed... Lets see ... read more
