They say it's Hawaii here but…where is the sun? Well the weather was not great but not that bad either. The first couple of days I could go around the island. Then, when it rained too much I stayed at the hostel and got some rest. I was actually pretty tired, I would almost say a little bit travelled-off, so it was a good thing. Jeju is a volcanic island. The main crater stands in the middle but there is lots and lots of small ones all over the island. I went to the one on the East coast, called Seokwipo. You can climb up to the crater. It is circular and has a 'hole' in the middle. As one can expect really. From the distance you can really see how flat it is. I went ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul March 25th 2014

Elfi left Seoul after only 3 days. I stayed longer, I felt like I needed to explore this city a bit more. I had met an American guy at the hostel and went around the old part of Seoul with him. We went to Bukchon Hanok village between Gyeongbok palace and Changdeok palace. There we found a place where they make makgeolli and we learned the fermentation process. Then, we randomly passed a house that was being renovate. Being a bit nosy I tried to look through the half opened entrance door and the woman (owner) saw me. Instead of shutting the door, she opened it and welcomed us inside! This house is fantastic, it is U-shaped and organised around the central garden. The woman spoke a very good English. She actually bought two houses and ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul March 23rd 2014

On our first day, we climbed up Ansam 'mountain' to reach a view point. From up there we could measure the immensity of Seoul, we could barely see the limit of the city…there is 'only' 10 million people living here. We kind of lose ourselves on our way down and ended up in an empty neighbourhood. It was very odd and a little strange. The all neighbourhood felt like a ghost town. The house were not even that old. After walking within the empty streets for 10-15 min we understood. At the other end of the district we saw them…the cranes. This area must have been chosen for re-development. I guess that the 2 storeys family houses will be replaced by high rise buildings. Everything is on a different scale here. The wholesale market is gigantic. ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul » Hongdae March 22nd 2014

We arrived in Incheon airport by night and took the subway to our hostel. We booked a place in Hongdae district (Seoul) which turned out to be a great idea. It's very close to Seoul University thus the area is young and there is lots of restaurants and pubs with reasonable prices (of course coming from China everything seem expensive, we have to adjust). Jimjilbang. You should not leave Korea without experiencing a Jimjilbang. So we checked that off our list asap. But what is it? Jimjilbang are public bath house. Upon arrival, we were given two towels, a large T-shirt, a short and a key. We had no idea about the procedure so we followed the woman who entered just after us. First you have to leave your shoes in a small locker. Then you ... read more

Geo: 34.27, 108.9One of the 'not to be missed' spot in China: the famous army of Terracotta warriors. And once you see it you understand why it is well worth a visit. I don't really have words to describe it. The site was built by an emperor who was rather megalo. Qin Shi Huan (260-210 BC) got on the throne at the age of 13 and decided to unify China, which he did! And thus became the first emperor of China. He was a great strategist. In the meantime he ordered the construction of his mausoleum and it would have to be magnificent. He wanted to be buried with a representation of its army, and in life-size please! So workers/artist had to build soldiers, archers, horses, horsemen and chariots which were later buried why the emperor. ... read more

Asia » China » Chongqing » Dazu March 14th 2014

Geo: 29.6809, 105.721Dazu is famous for its rock carving of Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist influences. Carvings (about 50 000 statues) were done within caves and on cliffs. The oldest statues date back from the Tang Dynasty (about 650 AD) but work was carried on until the Song dynasty (12th century). Some sculptures are very tall, others are vey small, most are painted (and the paints remains) and others are plain but all are very refined. The details are just stunning. Just have a look for yourselves.

Geo: 29.3654, 104.771We got to Zigong with no idea of where we might spend the night…and we got very lucky. An American girl saw us at the bus station, looking lost and asked us if she could help. We ended up spending two nights in her small apartment on university campus. It was really nice. Zigong is not really on a tourist track. It is only famous for its salt mines and a site were many skeletons of dinosaurs were discovered. So we visited both the Salt museum and the dinosaur museum. I think we would agree to say that the salt museum is the most informative museum we have seen so far. The explanation in English were good and informative. And the exhibit is set in an old house. The Dinosaur museum is only worth ... read more

Asia » China » Sichuan » Leshan March 11th 2014

Geo: 29.5623, 103.764There is only one thing to see in Leshan and it is the Big Buddha or Dafo. We arrived late from Emei Shan (we had a late morning) so we just walked around town. Beryl finally found the socks she has been looking for for so long. Some facts about Dafo: it was carved in the cliff in order to appease the river that flows below. It dates back from the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD) and is 233-foot tall. Its toes are bigger than a regular person…! Many temples and tombs can be found in the same area, so we spend the all day exploring the site. The giant Buddha is indeed very impressive but it is not very 'beautiful'. And really the most impressive thing is the fact that it was carved within ... read more

Geo: 29.5011, 103.391We spent 3 days lost in the holy Mountains and it was just nice. Emei Shan is the most famous of the 4 holy Buddhist mountains of China, where Yuxian arrived from India on the back of the famous elephant with 6 tusks, Puxian. The story says that, one day, an herbalist living in the mountain saw a white deer and followed him until the top of the Mountain. Once there, he saw a golden light and a temple was built in its honour… Since then, Emei Shan is a symbol of Buddhism and many temples have been build there. Sadly, like in many places in China, most of them have been damaged by either fire or war (against Japanese or Cultural Revolution). However the oldest is still over 1100years old.The hike starts at ... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07After a long way by bus between Lijiang and Panzihua (Beo can talk better about it ), we finish with the train to Chengdu, all together it took almost 24hours but we got to see some beautiful scenery along the bus route. In Chengdu we only went to see the Panda Breeding Center. Well it was not much more than a zoo. You can only see the pandas in their small enclosures or even lock inside. The only indication about you being in a breeding center is the relatively high number of panda cubs. But you don't really get any infos. It was all a bit disappointing. In the end the best thing was to see the Red Pandas. They are small balls of red fur with funny face paint. In one enclosure, visitors are ... read more
