I have time so I decided to try to explore the Tulou area on my own (despite the advice of the guy at the hostel in Xiamen telling me to take a tour). I somehow managed to reach the hostel in the small town in the middle of the mountain. I say somewhat because nothing went according to plan but I got there rather quickly. When I arrived, I was lucky that two guys speaking English were about to go for lunch and then to the nearest Tulou. I drop my bag and tagged along with them. That was so so so lucky. This area would have been very hard to navigate on my own especially that the staff at the hostel doesn't speak English. First things first, what is a Tulou? A Tulou is a ... read more

Geo: 24.45, 118.0821h train journey but it could have been a good few hours less if we hadn't stopped so long for random reasons. The guy at the hostel recommended I book a seat and I agreed to it because it is much much much cheaper than a sleeper (and usually I don't sleep to bad on seats). However I was not prepared for that kind of seats...hard, at a 90°C angle and with no clear separation between people. So when I got on board I immediately regretted not getting a sleeper but by the end of the journey I thought it was a great experience. I don't regret it and I slept better then I first thought I would. The first few hours of the journey were rather chaotic. I sat more or less at ... read more

Geo: 29.7095, 118.353I chose to visit those two town with a tour. It's is usually not my way but I had two reasons for this: first I thought it was good value (230yuen for the entrance fees, lunch and the bus, entrance fees for individuals is 100yuen per town, so do the math) and then I still have that stupid cold so being booked on a tour will get me out of bed. Plus I really can't be asked to work out public transports. In the morning the air was crisp but the temperature rose in the afternoon and I could take of my hat, gloves, one jumper and even my overcoat. It was very scenic and the village felt out of another time. I let you go through the pictures to get a feel of ... read more

Geo: 29.7095, 118.3532014 started with a timid 'happy new year'. I went to an jazzish bar with a Canadian guy I had just met in the hostel. We were not the only westerners in that place but we were less than 10. And Chinese clearly don't give a damn about our new year. So we just had a timid count down and few people shouting Happy New Year. Welcome to 2014. I think one sentence can summarize the philosophy of my first day in 2014: When in Rome...do as Romans do. Well, that's it. This morning I took the bus to Tunxi. I am now completely out of the zone where I can still hope I might find a restaurant with an English menu or a picture menu. So for dinner, I had to walk around ... read more

Geo: 30.25, 120.17Ok so this is the third time I am regretting not packing any Strepsil-type medicine. I got a sore throat in India, in Taiwan and now in China. So I think it will happen again... As a result I am in one of those mood where I would love to just roll from my bed to my sofa and just stay there with the TV on and a good cup of tea. Well, clearly you can't do that in an hostel. Instead I got woken up at dawn by a couple in my dorm and they took forever to get ready...when I finally got up, at 9am which is not that late at all, I had to face the cold living room. I didn't stay there. Instead I went to crab some food and ... read more

Geo: 30.25, 120.17The lake is not that big so I decide to rent a bicycle to go around it. Wise choice. I had an early start because I couldn't book a bike and wanted to make sure I would get one from the hostel as it is much cheaper than in town. Around the lake there is a wide collection of Pagodas, temples and gardens. And views are so lovely that they are considered as the definition of classical beauty in China. The lake dates back from the 8th century, all of it is man-made even the island in the middle. Two famous poets, Baidi (9th century) and Sudi (11th century) added their touch to the making of the lake by added two causeways. They are very nice to cycle on, they are lined with willows ... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78Nanjing has been the capital many times in the past. In recent history, it was picked by the government of the Rebublic of China as the capital. However, when le communist party founded the People's Republic of China, they moved the capital to Beijing (because it seems that all goverment having Nanjing for capital city are short-lived). I let you have a look at the pictures and legends.

Geo: 32.05, 118.78Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming dynasty, is the only Ming emperor buried outside of Beijing. The mausoleum was build between 1381 and 1423 and the emperor was buried in 1398. A spiritual path leads to the mausoleum. The first section (615m) of the path is lined with 6 kind of stone animals: lions, Xiezhi, camels, elephants, qilin and horses (see picture's legend for more details). They are guarding the tomb and drive away evil spirits. The second part (250m) is flanked by a pair of baluster, two pairs of generals and two pairs of civil officers. They stand with great dignity and guard the tomb with their loyalty. Then you go through a serie of gates, the most relevant one is the Red gate which is the last one before the rectangular ... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78Let me explain. I usually never use an hair-dryer. Few reasons for this: first it makes my hair very static, second it takes times and third I don't onw an hair-dryer (that's probably the main reason). However since I have reach the Chinese winter I have found myself actively looking for an hair-dryer. One reason for this, it is real cold here and they don't really have the heater inside... I can actually see my breath in the bathroom. In fact I feel usually colder in the evening when I am in the hostel than outside during the day. Thanks god they kind of heat the dorms. So for the past two nights I took refuge in there, under my duvet. That's the only way to be warm. Last evening I did some laundry ... read more

Geo: 31.177, 120.8I visited Tongli on Christmas day. There was not many tourist around. It was very enjoyable. You actually have to pay a fee to get within the town. It's a bit expensive (£10) but I think it is worth it because then you can get into every house and garden with that ticket and you get to see a lot more than if you had to pay for each site individually. At least I get the feeling that it's worth it. Otherwise I wouldn't have known wich site to pick and might have missed out on some pearls. Some site are UNESCO so you have to see those but some are not and these are the one were you can go upstairs and really see what the houses and furnitures looked liked back in ... read more
