Taiwan has one of the three mud hot spring known worldwide (one is in Japan and the other in Sicily). So I thought I had to check it out. It is not a very well-traveled spot and people were really surprised I had even heard of the place. To get there I had to get the train and then two different buses. Once again the journey went fine thanks to people kindness. The station master in Xinying was really funny and once I had told him where I was going it would point at each arriving/departing bus and make a big cross with his arms to make sure I don't get on it. After about 25min, my bus was here and he pointed at it with a big smile. Xie Xie (thank you). I arrived in ... read more

Ok so my first idea when in Kaohsiung was to go up North in the Maolin Mountain to see a colony of butterflies. Well...it was a lot more complicated than anticipated and totally out of budget. So, I ended up going south to a little island named Little Liu Qiu (pronouce Shia Liou Chiou). Turned out to be a really good choice. I had a fun day and getting there was half of the fun. I had to take a bus to Dongang bus station and then another bus to the harbour and a boat. I know I keep finding myself on boats despite my horrible sea sickness. But this time I was fine (both ways). I have to say it was smoother than a ride on-board an Indian bus. Once on at destination, I managed ... read more

I really liked this city, Kaohsiung. The night market I went to (Rueifang) was amazing. And I managed to identify the food I bought :) so I got chicken heart on a stick, egg+sausage+cheese encased in some sort of dough and roasted squid and also green tea. I didn't see a single western face while I was there (and I went around a few time before I could decide what to eat). I definitively recommend that night market. The second evening I somehow ended in the fashion district of Kaohsiung. It's Shinkugan shopping district (east of Central Park). The lanes are filled with shops selling fashionable clothes and the young crowd that goes with it. It is kind of a tame version of Takeshita-dori in Harajuku (Tokyo). I felt a little bit out of place with ... read more

Asia » Taiwan » Hualien » Taroko December 4th 2013

Hualien is the biggest city on the east coast, nothing special. I just based myself there to explore Taroko National Park. The main attraction is the Taroko gorge. I met a guy at the hostel on the day I arrived and we decided to visit the gorge together the next day. We used the shuttle bus to do so. It is not the most efficient way as we happened to have to wait for the bus but it is the cheapest way. We still had time to see all we wanted (mainly because many of the trails in the park are close due to the cyclone that struck the island 2 months ago). So we did the few trails that were open. Chi-Jene picked me up at the airport. I was just allowed to drop my rucksack at the hostel and we were off to the night market to try weird food. So we started with pork belly soup accompanied by a Taiwanese hamburger, then we had tofu and vegetable and for dessert sweet congee (type of rice porridge). The old women at the congee stand randomly knew I am French.... Apparently I just look French. The next day, Chi-Jene took me for breakfast (some sort of dough and soya milk) before visiting the Lin's family historical residence. It's a very nice place. Once I am rich and have my own house I want a pond with a bridge in my garden and a moon door (very important). Then we had a lovely lunch with her family (her ... read more

Geo: 10.1418, 76.1787We spend our last few days in a resort on Cherai beach. It's about 4km of withe sand and palm trees. Our resort was 2min inland near the river. Very nice.We did about nothing apart from relaxing, reading, swimming and playing Karrom. The sea is so warm it is just about refreshing. You could stay in there for hours! Karrom is an East Asian game. My parents have one so I used to play when I was a kid. It was really fun to play again (especially because I won, Tom had no beginners luck). My trip in India started with few days at the beach and ended the same way. I think this is a very good way to do it.On a passé les quelques derniers jours à la plage à Cherai. C'est du ... read more

Geo: 9.50003, 76.3299The backwaters are made up of a multitude of canals. It's a bit like a delta. It is very popular to rent a houseboat to explore them. You can rent it for a few hours or for an overnight trip. We went for the overnight option. Our houseboat was among the smallest ones. Some can accommodate huge parties. On the lower deck form back to front, there is the kitchen, our room, an area to eat/sit and the rudder. There is also a small upper deck with only a sofa and a coffee table. You could thing it would be really boring to spend so much time on a canal but there is so much to look at! There is life everywhere: wildlife (mainly birds) and human activities (fishing, laundry, going to and from work/school).We ... read more

Geo: 13.0615, 80.2478The second part of the wedding took place in Chennai. The first evening was a reception with only close friends and family. This is where they cut the cake and fed each other. This is also were booze was allowed, where the dancing happened and the party carried on until 5am (without Vikash or Shankari who had to make sure to look presentable for the next day). Indeed, the next evening was another huge reception, the couple stood on stage for about 3h while people would take turn on stage to greet them and have their picture taken. Geo: 11.0056, 76.9661Vikash and Shankari wedding was just grandiose. We were invite to all the celebrations. It was an epic 4 days of celebrations. The pre-nuptial reception and the wedding ceremony where in Coimbatore. The reception is kind of an introduction of the bride and the groom. After a short ceremony, they were greeted by over 2 000 people. It was just an awful lots of people. We had to line up to go on stage, greet them, had a picture taken and then we went for dinner. They had a catering hall with a lot of specialty dishes. Very good. The wedding ceremony was the following morning. Tom and I dressed in our best and most traditional Indian clothes. I think we looked good. The ceremony lasted for 1h/1h30 and I don't really know what ... read more

Geo: 11.4134, 76.6952Ooty is at 2 200m. We arrived at night, it was cold. We had to wear our jumper and jacket. The next morning, we went for a trek around Ooty. Our guide took us across farmland, Eucalyptus forest, tea fields and on a view point. We had a great time. I wish I had time to write down all of what he told us before I forget. I am forgetting already. I remember a bit about the tea. They pick the leaves every other week (we only saw women in the fields). There is 3 types of leaves: the big ones make black tea, the 'still not open' ones make green tea and the very small buds are used to make white tea. The tea bushes are about 80cm tall but are cut to ... read more
