Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City February 13th 2014

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662We arrived in Ho Chi Mind City in the morning, found an hostel, visited a bit and left the next day very early. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly named Saigon) is very different from Hanoi. The streets are also very busy but somehow less noisy, people do not use their horns as much. I also think there is more high rise buildings here. We just walk around the city centre, went to see the cathedral and the post office. The latest was build by the French in the late 19th century and looks more like a train station than a post office, but it's impressive. In the evening, we decided to get a night view of the city and to do so we went up the Sheraton. They have a terrace bar on the ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An February 11th 2014

Geo: 15.875, 108.336Hoi An is roughly mid-way between Hanoi and Saigon. We stopped there for one night to recover from all the night buses we have done. It was a great choice. We really enjoyed this small town. The atmosphere is very relaxed and layed back here. It is a Unesco site so there is a lot of tourist but it was OK, we managed not to care too much. The old town is made of two-storey house with a mix of european and Chinese architecture (Vietnam was under Chinese occupation for over a 1000 years). All the buildings are painted in yellow and white. We walked around the pedestrian streets (which are lined up with clothe shops) and went to visit few temple and the Chinese communal houses. We grab a beer in a bar ... read more

Geo: 22.3945, 104.056Sa Pa is in the mountain, west of Lao Cai. It's the opposite side compared to Bac Ha and it's much greener. We managed to find an hotel with a terrace offering a great view on the Fansipan (highest summit in Vietnam). So the first evening we just grabbed some food at the market and ate while watching the sun setting behind the mountain. On our first day we just walked around and above town. We also did some shopping. There is so many shops selling cheap outdoor equipment. In the end, Elfi bought a small day pack and that's it.Home stay experience. There is many Black H'Mong women on the market trying to sell you bags or take you to their village. We decided to try a home stay. Our guide was Mu. ... read more

Geo: 22.5144, 104.287We decided to explore to region around Bac Ha on our own. So we rented a motorbike, took a map and we were off.The first day we went to Coc Ly. On Tuesday there is supposed to be a big market there but because of the Tet it was really small, only few stalls and one place to have lunch. We had the usual Pho surrounded by local people. It was really nice even if we couldn't understand a word of what was going on. On the way back, we rode through the mountain. We found a great spot to watch the sunset over the rice terrace (it's not the right season, the rice paddy are dry, but it is still nice). The second day, we randomly ended up in a local festival near Can ... read more

Geo: 22.4751, 103.974We did the 8h journey between HaNoi and Lao Cai on the night bus. Here in Vietnam they have sleeper buses which mean you can lie down. Well for tall people it's not that great as they can't fit in. The sleepers are Vietnamese size. Still it is pretty good. I would even say it's awesome except that the roads condition is so bad that you just keep bouncing around, so sleeping is not easy. For the journey we had prepared sandwiches with blue cheese inside (brought by Elfi from Germany). I am pretty sure that every one in the bus hate us for the very distinctive smell that emanated from it….but we didn't care much, it was delicious! On a fait les 8h de route qui séparent Hanoi de Lao Cai en bus-couchettes (donc ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi February 1st 2014

Geo: 21.0243, 105.855Hanoi (and the rest of Vietnam) after the Tet is just a no-man land, everything is close. Only some small restaurant are still open so we could find something to eat, mainly Pho (if not only). We stayed at our friends' place for two days doing the laundry, catching up on emails and trying to organise the rest of our trip. This was a little more difficult than planned as all the train up north were full and most buses also were. We finally found a bus to Lao Cai (last town before China). We are on the roll again!Plus rien ne se passe, toute la ville est mortibus et tous les magasins fermés, seuls quelques boui-boui sont encore en état de marche, ce qui nous permet de manger des Pho à tour de ... read more

Geo: 20.0976, 106.086We woke up to an empty town (and it was not early). We had been warned that nothing works the day after Tet but it is something to see the streets that empty. We rented a motorbike to wander around. The plan was to go to Phat Diem to see a famous church and then to the beach. Well, it didn't happened like that. We passed through Phat Diem without really realising and when we did we were in the middle of the countryside. We decided to stop for lunch and randomly found ourselves in a small temple. The man offered us tea and then happy water (wine rice). After we had lunch on top of a hill overlooking a great landscape. On the way back we found the famous church. It was white ... read more

Geo: 20.25, 105.98We spend New Year in Ninh Binh. We arrived in the afternoon from Cuc Phuong, The town was really quite. We had a quick look around to try to rent motorbikes but couldn't see anything so we got one from the hotel. We had to have dinner at the hotel because everywhere else was closed! We stayed downstairs drinking beers and at around 11pm the boss came with a bottle of rice wine to toast the new year. After a couple of shot it was time for us to make our way to see the fireworks. To find them we just had to follow the flow of scooters. It was unbelievable the number of scooters carrying at leats 2 people each (and a maximum of 5). The fireworks were supposed to start at midnight ... read more

Geo: 20.3167, 105.633It was a real hassle to get to Cuc Phuong National park but it was worth it. We slept 20km inside the park in a house that could host about 20 people but we were the only one there, in the middle of the forest. Thankfully, a family leaves at the park centre and they run a small restaurant where we could get rice, soup and fried vegetables. That's all we ate for 2 days (plus the few fruits we had we us). Also, we had no electricity after 9.30pm so we were given canddles. We walked a bit in the forest and tried to see animals. We got to see one giant black squirrel. It was very big and black… We also saw a lot of regular squirrels and few small birds. We didn't ... read more

Geo: 20.25, 105.98We went to Tam Coc to spend the Tet away from the madness of Hanoi. It worked perfectly. Tam Coc is also known as the terrestrial Halong Bay which mean rocks spike the landscape. We cycled through rice field to reach the different sites. We stopped at a temple build at the foot of a rock. The temple itself was nothing special but we went up the stairs behind it to reach a temple build in a cave. We were about to walk back down when we notice we could go around that temple up few stairs into a huge cave with some statues of Buddha and then even further to the top of the rock. I guess the spikes are about 80 to 100 meters high so you get a great view. THE ... read more
