Geo: 36.75, 139.61Nikko is only a couple of hours away from Tokyo and really easy to access by train. Most people come here on a day trip but I would recommend to spend at least one night in Nikko. Like that you can take your time to explore the different temples without having to rush. They are really worth your time. They are not Unesco for nothing. I spent three nights and two days here. I will try to give a brief overview of my impressions. You can wonder around the site for free but you need to pay fees for the bigger temples. There is no pass so it turns out a bit expensive, but again, well worth it.Rinnoji temple (also known by myself as 'the one under repair'): It's the first temple you reach ... read more

Geo: 35.67, 139.77Coming back from Mt Fuji, I struggled to find the hotel where I was supposed to meet with Elfi, Tine and Andrea. I finally managed (after asking twice my direction to a policeman) but they had already gone. So I ended up going out with two guys I just met there. We went to Akihabara, the electronic town. It is the geek district per se. Near the subway station, there is a Gundam café. Everything in there as a link with the series. We all had a cocktail. Let's kick start the night. The main street is lined with building in which you find many floors of video games, crab games and other random games. You can see those arcades are mainly directed towards guys. Most of the figurines you can win represent anime ... read more

Geo: 35.4893, 138.688On our day of departure, we had to leave the flat by 9am. After that I waved goodbye to the other 3 and left on my own. I took the train to the Five Lakes district and stopped at Kawaguchi station. For the return journey, I took the bus which turned out to be cheaper and as fast. For my first night, I stayed in a fancy hotel. I was in a three-person dorm, nothing too fancy there but the hotel had its own onsen. After dropping my bags, I went for a walk around the lake Kawaguchi. From the side opposite to my hotel, there is a very good view of Mt Fuji. Except that this afternoon the clouds were masking the top of the mountain. I had an early diner in order ... read more

Geo: 35.67, 139.77We reached Shinjuku (Tokyo) at 6am on a Friday morning. We were on the overnight bus from Kyoto. We actually slept quite well, the seats are spacious, reclines well and we were a little tipsy when boarding the bus. That helps but also the driver drives so smoothly you kind of forget you are in a bus.Once in Tokyo, we had to find our way from the bus drop to the subway station. It wasn't far. At such an early hour, the subway was almost empty. We took the Shinjuku line to the other side of town. We had to meet Elfi's friend at 2pm, so we found a spot near the river to have breakfast (biscuit and coffee/tea from Family Mart). The great thing with Family Mart is that there is always a ... read more

Geo: 35.01, 135.75Arashiyama 嵐山 = Storm mountain. It's a district west of Kyoto. I really like this part of town even if it's a bit far off and it takes about 45min by bus to get there from the city centre. Today, the weather is very unstable. Rain and sun alternate and the wind blows. In the end, this weather made up for very dramatic sceneries. The mountain is full of blooming cherry trees that make clear white patches among the other trees. This landscape was very splendid when the sun would shine on it especially with dark grey clouds for background. The river running through Arashiyama is crossed by Togetsukyo Bridge. The wooden bridge is over 400 years old and when I arrived there, in the rain, it was roamed by a wave of colourful ... read more

Geo: 35.01, 135.75I met up with a friend I know from St Andrews. Hélène is french but have been living in Japan for few years and in Kyoto for few month. We met at Demachiyanagi. It's a park at the tip of the island formed by a division of the river. The island is linked to the side of the river by a turtle bridge which makes for a great playground. I was a bit early, and she was a bit late so I had plenty of time to enjoy people watching at the site. When she got here, we found a nice little café to have lunch. I ordered Omurice. It's a dish in which you can see some western influence. You get a thin omelette wrapping a generous amount of fried rice. Yummy. It's always ... read more

Geo: 35.01, 135.75Walking the Philosopher's path (Tetsugaru no michi). I walked it before but in late September it looks nothing like it does now! Today, the small stream and paved path are lined with hundreds of cherry trees in full bloom. The view is just stunning! OK you kind of have to battle through a horde of tourist but everyone is in a good mood, here to enjoy the first warm days of spring and the sakura. And sometimes people makes for good shot. Tetsugaku no michi runs roughly between two hugely famous temples, Ginkaku-ji (Silver temple) and Nanzen-ji. I did visit those already, so on the way I stopped at the ever so slightly less famous Honen-in. This temple was built in1681 in the place of the thatched roof hut where priest Honen used to ... read more

Geo: 35.01, 135.75Daitoku temple complex is a large enclosed area in northern Kyoto. The place is the head quarter of the Rinzai school, a branch of Japanese Zen Buddhism. The complex is composed by the main temple, Daitoku temple, and about 24 subtemples. According to many guides, it is one of the best place in Japan to experience Zen culture and architecture and to enjoy Zen gardens. Not all the temples are open to the public. And you have to pay a fee for each open temple you wish to visit. So I choose two of them a little bit randomly. Koto-in is probably the most famous temple in Daitoku-ji, especially known for its maple trees producing beautiful colours in autumn. The temple was established in 1601 by Hosokawa Tadaoki. Geo: 35.01, 135.75Hirano shrine was established in the 8th century and the present buildings date from the 17th century. It is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing - especially at night. Apparently there is about 400 trees of 50 different species (I read it, no way I could have tell). During full bloom, the trees are lit up and visitor can enjoy a variety of food stalls in the shrine's park.I went there about 4pm. I am right on time for full bloom. The atmosphere within the shrine ground was very serene but very festive at the same time. Lots of people seemed to be here to enjoy the afternoon sun. There was a line in front of the main hall. Visitor were waiting to cast a prayer. How to pray at a Shinto shrine? ... read more

Geo: 34.68, 135.5I arrived in Osaka in the evening. I had booked my hotel very last minute so I had to take whatever what left at a reasonable price. My room just about 7m square with nothing but a futon, a TV set and a fan. Well I guess it is enough. The only bathroom was downstairs, near the lobby. It is a common facility, so when it's empty, you can go and turn the sign on 'Women' (or Men). And then only a person of that sex can go in. Once inside, you strip and put your clothe in a drawer. The next room has 4 showers on the wall and a big bath (only in use at specific time). I took my shower seating on a plastic stool. I went to visit Osaka castle ... read more
