Geo: 26.9025, 99.9316After one day delay, (hum the fish in overdose is not good for the organism), we set off for the Tiger Leaping Gorge aka the mandatory hike when you are in this area! And it is well worth the effort. As we were leaving our hostel, we met three guys who were also heading to the Gorge. When they found out that we were planning to walk the upper trail and overnight in the Gorge they disappeared, only to reappear few meters further saying they would come with us! So along our travel we learn the magic Chinese word: "Itshi!!", which means “together” thus we start to slowly understand the Chinese psychology, that falls down on our head in many other times… (see next)I think the photos of the Gorge are going to talk ... read more

Geo: 26.9025, 99.9316Don't listen to what people say…or at least not always! People lie, hehe!!! We were told several times that Lijiang is too touristic and that we would found Shuhe, the second old town centre, more authentic. Well, this was probably true a few years back in time but now Shuhe has been completely taken over by tourists, guesthouses, restaurants and souvenir shops. And its small size make it very difficult to escape from touristland… The two cities (Lijiang and Shuhe) are connected by new built pavilions, all of them being the same, awful. I (Beryl) went to Lijiang while Elfi had to remain in bed (small stomach problems). Lijiang is indeed very touristy but in the morning there isn't so many people and it's much bigger than Shuhe thus it is very easy to ... read more

Geo: 26.3, 99.85Béryl speaking: ''We celebrated my birthday in the tiny village of Shaxi. It is lost in the mountain somewhere between Dali and our next stop Lijiang. It was a memorable birthday! We ordered some take-away food for dinner. It is much more difficult than it sound to make the people at the restaurant understand that we wanted to have our food packed, but we managed. We ordered a bit more than we should have… We went back to the hostel and ate dinner with the bottle of red wine (Gaillac) Elfi had brought back from France. And for dessert we had wine, dark chocolate and the local cheese deep-fried. Just awesome!'' By the way (Elfi), the village is super small and kept its flavour of old and local architecture. After the famous night, we ... read more

Geo: 25.7, 100.15We were only planning to stay a couple of days in the small town of Dali and ended up staying for four days. Dali is a very old town where the first settlements are dated from 3000 years ago. Located at 1900m high, near the lake Erhai, the town is surrounded by mountains up to 4000m high. It is just an awesome place and you can judge by yourself when looking at the photos we took.I (Elfi) had the contact of a friend of a friend (Matthieu), his partner (Dorine) and their newly born daughter. We met the family in a park near the city centre. It's where we tried tea with "crisanteum" flower for the first time. They introduce us to the region and their circle of friends. It is how we got ... read more

Asia » China » Yunnan » Kunming February 22nd 2014

Geo: 25.05, 102.7We arrived in the evening, around 9pm, in the city of 'eternal spring' for a stay of only 24h. We were late for dinner so everything was closed but we had the chance to find a street-stand where they had BBQ skewers and BBQ vegetables. One of the best BBQ we had! The guys at the table next to us were quite drunk and were loudly playing a drinking game. It was some sort of shi-fu-mi but different. It was fun to watch them. The city of Kunming has nothing special, just a big Chinese city. We walked around, went to the Yunnan museum (it's free so it's ok but there is not much in it and nothing is translated into English). We found ourselves in the biggest park of the town late afternoon. Parks ... read more

Geo: 13.4691, 104.041On our third day, the theme was: temples, jungle and bicycles. We explored temples were the jungles is reclaiming its right. It was a great day! (Even if we were very tired and a little bit templed-off.)We started with the small temple of Bantaey Kdei. Elfi had a long chat with a young girl selling postcard and other little things, to learn a bit more about the reasons why a little girl sell bullshit to tourists instead of going to school while I sat in a corner eating bananas. I think we were just a little too tired to really appreciate this temple. But it had nice carvings and was rather rough. Elfi: there were as well a huge bee nest hanging on a tree and bats hiding in the towers, awesome. The other super ... read more

Geo: 13.4691, 104.041On our second day, we visited the most famous temples of Angkor (Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat) by bicycle. Angkor Thom is a massive complex with few temples enclosed within the same wall, which formed the City at this time like most of the biggest temples there. First, we tried to visit the Bayon, the first Buddhist temple in Angkor, as early as possible, but after our early start the few previous days, we didn't managed to be on our bikes by 6:00am. So we arrived just before 9am and it was already crowded. The Bayon is famous for its towers with faces of Buddha facing each cardinal direction. This temple is covered by multiple Bas-Relief and would deserve some explanations, some of them are partly destroyed and/or not easy to understand. So we ... read more

Geo: 13.4691, 104.041For our first day in Angkor (which means capital in Khmer) we decided to get a tuk-tuk and to visit the temples that are further away. Banteay Srei is about 25km away from Siem Reap so we set off early (meeting at 6:00 with the tuk-tuk driver) and had a chance to enjoy the "cool" temperature and admired the sunrise on the way. It is famous for its fine bas-relief carving on red sandstones. It is indeed very impressive and was extremely well restored, however we realised after seeing the other that we didn't 'feel' anything special with this one. The magic was that we avoided the crowd. Banteay Samre is the only temple (as far as we know) with an inside moat. We really enjoyed this small temple which was restored by anastilosis ... read more

Geo: 11.5588, 104.917We arrived in Phnom Penh by bus from Ho Chi Minh City ("same same", our new slogan). Crossing the border was a piece of cake, so it took us just about 6h from door to door. The first thing we discovered upon arrival is that there is no public buses in Phnom Penh…we had to resign ourselves to take a tuk-tuk to our hotel. The city was not so busy and we learned later that today (14/02/2014) was a bank holiday for Buddhist believers. In the afternoon, we just walked around town and in the evening we grabbed dinner at the night market. The food stands formed a square and in the empty space in the middle were disposed some mat. After ordering whatever we wanted, we sat on a mat to enjoy. We ... read more
