Geo: 44.9474, 2.48346Aurillac. You probably have never heard of it. In France we mainly (if not only) know it as 'the blue dot in the middle of France'. Blue in reference to the forecast maps. And as I have just learned, it is the capital of the umbrella. So guess what...it rains quite a bit. I got lucky, it didn't rain while I was there. The main purpose of my visit was to see my friend from Uni, Crevette, his partner and their 3 month-old daughter. So I had a quick training on 'how to take care of a baby' feeding, part 1 - the bottle. I managed that part well (I think). Didn't try to change any nappies. When we were not babysitting, we walked around the center of town (few times), we also went up the ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Le Mont-Saint-Michel August 25th 2013

Geo: 48.6358, -1.51122Finally! I have seen the Mont Saint Michel. It is has impressive as one can imagine it. The abbey is perched on the top of the rock with houses build on the flanks. Very impressive architecture. If you don't have much money in your pockets or don't want to spend an insane amount in only one day then here are some tips. First, pack a sandwich, the food on the Mont is expensive and not that great. Second, don't park in the car park. If you come from the west you can drive a little further and park near a trail. Then it is about 30min walk to the free shuttle bus. This trick will save you 12€ and it is very nice to walk toward the Mont, the view is great.Even if you want ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany August 23rd 2013

Geo: 48.65, -2.01667St-Malo is one of the last French city with its walls still complete. It is remarkable, especially when you consider that 80% of the city was destroyed during WWII by bombing and blast. The relative good condition of the walls at the end of the war prompted the town mayor to attempt a rebuild. And the town was indeed rebuild to look identical to what it did before the war.Nowadays it is a very touristic place. The main streets inside the walls are lined up with fancy shops where you can buy fancy ice cream, cakes from Brittany, paintings, and of course the famous blue&white stripped sailor jumper. It has been a long time since I have seen such a concentration of people wearing what I will call for now the 'french stripes'.To get ... read more

Europe » France August 22nd 2013

Geo: 49.4424, 1.09849I was agreeably surprised by Rouen. The city centre is made by half-timbered houses and pedestrian paved streets. Lovely. In one little street I found a shop called Beryl, they sell shoes...I think this store name is only present in the North east of France.I stayed with a friend from high school. He had to work so I had time to go to the museum. They had a very interesting temporary exhibit about ' Impressionist' with many paintings of Monet, Caillebotte, Sisley and many more.In the evening, they have a light and sound show at the abbey. The first part is supposed to tell the story of Joan of Arc, I didn't get any of it, to me it was just pretty lights on the wall of the abbey. The second part was meant ... read more

Geo: 49.9275, 1.08787I hate boats. I hate being at sea. I am always sick. I don't remember being on a boat and not being sick, ever.Despite that fact I decided to go back to France on the ferry. Some might think it is brave, other that it is foolish, I thought it was suicidal. Until.....it all went fine :) Andrew took me to the harbor, it was a sunny day. I was very glad he was there, I felt a little more relaxed and ever so slightly less anxious. Saying goodbye was difficult, I will miss him.The ferry was called 'Cote d'Albatre' and was totally huge. It was about as high as the 7-storey building that was in front of us! I found a spot at the back of the boat, outside and stayed there. Leaving ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » East Sussex » Brighton August 19th 2013

Geo: 50.8209, -0.139846We arrived in Brighton in a dreadful weather. You know that kind of drizzled and wind that just makes you feel miserable. Anyways, we went first to Andrew's new school to store all his stuffs in a cupboard. Brighton College looks nothing like a school to me, at least from the outside, then classrooms are like one would expect. The building are made of black bricks with windows in white sculpted stone, and there is a chapel in the middle. Really amazing for a school. After that we met with Gwen and went to check in in our hostel. It is opposite the pier with a bar on the ground floor. I can now say that this bar was very popular (for some unclear reasons) and thus the all hostel was a party hostel ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Suffolk » Ipswich August 15th 2013

Geo: 52.0593, 1.15567The south East of Suffolk is very flat with estuaries and sea shores being very muddy, thus this area is called the mud flat. The scenery of the seashore at Orford is not particularly dramatic however Orford is a picturesque village. As we have found very often along our journey across England, British villages are usually very nice. On our way there we passed a house out of a fairy tale. It doesn't show well on the picture but this red bricks house with its thatched roof, its walls covered with ivy and all the multicolored flowers at the front just reminded both of us of Hansel & Gretel. In the evening we went with Tom for a digestive walk. The initial plan was to take a quit walk to have a view at the ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cambridgeshire » Cambridge August 14th 2013

Geo: 52.2025, 0.131237Cambridge, what a lovely university town. I wish it was term time though, so instead of the myriad of Chinese tourists we would have seen the students. That would have probably been a lot more fun! Anyways, the architecture of the different colleges is fascinating. They all try to be more splendid than the other! Most of them are rather famous or maybe I watched too much of University challenge. I loved that program. We went to the Wren library (part of Trinity college). We had to ask a porter for directions and we ended up chatting with him a little. We asked him how students are assigned to each college. They don't use a sorting hat, instead each student just apply for its three favorites colleges. However, for Trinity they also have to seat ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Rutland » Oakham August 13th 2013

Geo: 52.6711, -0.734018The drive from Manchester to Stamford was long. Very scenic, as we drove across from to Mansfield, but long. Plus, avoid Chesterfield at all cost, the traffic was dreadful there. We stopped en route in a countryside pub for diner and some darts. It has been a long time since I had played but I still managed to go around the clock. We arrived at the Rutland water after dark thus it took us forever to find a good place to install our tent. We were near the lake so we woke up to a beautiful scenery. We didn't sleep so well though, mainly due to the noise made by the birds at dawn. We should have expected it as it is a bird watching spot. Stamford is a lovely small town and right ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater Manchester » Manchester August 11th 2013

Geo: 53.4807, -2.23451We are staying in a modern flat in Stalford Quays, near Media City where the BBC is located. From the living room we overlook one of the canals, damn good view to enjoy from the balcony. We went to the IWM (Imperial War Museums), which was very interesting and free. So definitely worth a look. We also keep being told that the Science Museum is very good but we don't have enough time to go there.Saturday night we decided that we needed to experienced Manchester night life and thus after diner and some cider (from Ampleforth) we headed toward the town center. Neither of us had any idea where to go so we asked few people. We got off the tram at Picadilly and went to the Northern Quarter. The first bar we went ... read more
