Geo: 12.314, 76.6759Mysore is a bustling city which main tourist attraction is the Maharaja's Palace. Tom really wanting to see it so I waiting for him to arrive to go inside. Tom was due to arrive on Sunday but missed his flight in London so didn't make it to Mysore until Monday. So I went around the place on my own for a day. I even tried street food and survived.Chamundi Hill: to get there I took the bus 201 from City bus station. It is about half an hour away, up a hill. The place was crowded with Indian tourist. I did not bother to queue to see inside the temple or to get a free darshan (the lines were too long). So I just stayed around the temple, watching people doing some rituals before ... read more

Geo: 12.314, 76.6759My first mission in Mysore was to buy a saree. I asked at my hotel where to get one and for what kind of price. A guy told me I would find the best deals at the Government Silk factory. It is also what the Lonely Planet says. So I went there. I gave them my budget and the women didn't try to convince me to get a more expensive one. And what I really liked was that the prices were written on each piece of fabric, which mean they don't make up a price for foreigners. You get a seat and then the show begins. The women unfolded many sarees on the table in from of me. Everything that had a little bit of pink or purple was eliminated. From the start I liked ... read more

Geo: 12.314, 76.6759This journey starts in Amritapuri and ends in Mysores 27h later. This is my first long distance travel in India and I am on my own.First, I had to wave goodbye to Chloé. It is thank to her if I feel fine starting this journey, I had a great introduction to India. I jumped into a taxi. I got a good price because he had just dropped someone here and didn't want to go back empty. At the bus station the taxi driver told me ''It's that bus''. So I climb in the designated bus and checked with a passenger ''Is this bus going to Ernakulam?''. Wobble of the head and slight movement of the shoulders and a movement of hand that to me seemed like he was pointing at a seat for me to ... read more

Geo: 9.17243, 76.5002For her PhD research, Chloé works with Amritapuri University. While studying there she has accommodation at the Ashram of Amma. And she told me that I should come and have a look for myself. It was not in my travel plan but why not.Amma is a leaving goddess and the Ashram is a place that contains the home where she was born, the small temple where she gave her first dashran, a big temple and a huge hall where she now gives her dashran. She is very popular and the Ashram has many high rise buildings to accommodate people. Amma wasn't on the premises while I was there and apparently it's very quiet when she is not there. She was on tour in Europe. Most people in the Ashram are followers, they believe in ... read more

Geo: 10.012, 76.2251Kathakali is a traditional dance form Kerala. It means 'telling a story in dancing'. We went to see a show in an old theatre. First, you get to see how they do the makeup. It is really impressive. And especially so when you know that all colors are natural. For example, yellow is made by mixing coconut oil with a stone. They put oil on a hard stone and scratch the softer stone on it to make the color. It is the same for red and black while other colors are from flowers or seeds. The glue they use to stick the paper on their face is made of rice. We saw the story of the Prince Bhima (green face) delivering an oppressed village from the demon Baka (red face). And at the end ... read more

Geo: 10.012, 76.2251I am glad I arrived in India in the relatively small town of Kochi in Kerala. And that my friend Chloé was waiting for me at the airport. She has been in India for almost two months now so she knows how things work here. First thing I did at the hotel was to have a nap and a shower. After that I was kind of operational. We went for a stroll along Fort Cochin waterfront and stayed there to see the sunset. Unfortunately, it was very hazy so the sun disappeared in the haze before setting on the sea. We still managed to have a good look at the Chinese fishing nets. They are legacy of the 15th century and need at least four men to operate them at high tide. Nowadays they ... read more

Geo: 43.9274, 2.14826The Lonely Planet China has ~1040 pages and weights over 800g. It's a monster! And I don't even need all of it. So I decided to dismantle it. It is a rather easy process. You need: the book, a hair-drier, a small scissor and a pair of cloves to protect your hands from the heat.First: remove the softcover from the pages by heating up the side of the book. Then: remove each section one by one by melting the clue and cutting the strings.DONE! My revamped China guide is now only 400g and 100% useful :) On the plus side, on a day to day basis, I will be able to take along with me only the few relevant pages and not the all book. They should think of a way to make pull-out chapter as ... read more

Geo: 43.9274, 2.14826I need an all-weathers proof suitcase....by this, I mean I need to pack stuff to survive from -5°C to +30°C. For the higher end of the spectrum it's easy: short, T-shirt, hat, sun block, DONE! While, for the lower end of the spectrum it's a bit trickier. Plus, I want my backpack to be as light as possible. I am aiming for about 12kg and a daypack of 5kg.

Geo: 43.9274, 2.14826I am enjoying being back in my hometown and having nothing to do. Well, by nothing I mean I am not actually working, but I feel as busy. I had to go blackberry picking with my Mum to make jam. Miam :) and I spend most of my time preparing my trip.On top of my priority list is 'GETTING VISA'. I need four in total but I will get the one for Cambodia at the border as I don't think I will have time to get it before I leave. Visas are a budgets by themselves. And after giving it long thought, here is what I think:-Vietnam: easy to apply for and get, do it yourself via the embassy (got that one already)-India: a little tricky but feasible, you have to go through VF ... read more

Europe » France » Corsica » Ajaccio September 17th 2013

Geo: 41.9186, 8.73688I am unpacking again. I have just spend one week in Corsica, this French island in the Mediterranean sea that we call the 'beauty island'. I went with Fan, my childhood friend. I wonder why we chose to go to an island as we are both sea sick but we did. On the way there the sea was very calm, however the way back was no fun. The sea was bad, they even almost cancelled the ferry and gave us plenty of puck-in bags. I used few of them but survived the crossing. In the end I still think it was worth it, we had lots of fun and there was not too many tourist. In Corsica there is something for everyone, from the beach with golden sand to mountain trails.
