Steph found an office for the bus company at the port and was able to secure a free transfer to the departure point. This worked well and we didn’t have long to wait for the bus to the capital Phnom Penh. It was a bit different from our recent forms of transport with reclining seats and a sandwich plus bottle of water for lunch. Another pleasant journey on decent roads through the Cambodian countryside spotting water buffalo and various types of birds. We arrived in the city near the palace and Moly a friendly driver offered to match the price of a Grab so we jumped into his tuk tuk. Our hotel was within walking distance of most of the important places and ,although it was very near to Pub Street, our room was thankfully at ... read more

I am writing this sipping a white wine looking out on a lovely beach on the island of Lombok. This is our first port of call and the first time I have got onto WiFi as the ship's connections are unreliable and very expensive. We left Fremantle on Sunday night and have spent 4 days at sea. Our days have consisted of the following Quizzes There are usually 3 quizzes each day. In the morning a 20 question general knowledge one, a 10 question themed quiz in the afternoon and just before dinner a combination 15 question one. So far they have been quite challenging. We did tie with 4 others once but have fallen just short. The other tables have up to 8 people and though we have been joined by a couple of others ... read more

I am quite happy with myself this morning! I slept really well last night, and woke up at about 9am, not my own accord though; I set my alarm! I think that I probably would have naturally slept on! It’s crazy how much I am sleeping whilst I’ve been in Seminyak! But to honest…. It is a total beach, shopping, eating and drinking tourist resort, so I’ve realised, that’s ok, I’m not missing out on anything! I had a good look on the internet for things to see here, but they just don’t appeal to me. A lot of the stuff is up in Ubud, where I’ve just for from. There are the coffee and rice tours, not for me, ATV hire, surfing, cooking etc. Many of the tours on offer involve long drives, which I’m ... read more

From Hanoi, I headed to Cao Bang. I was actually going to the Ban Gioc Waterfall, a place I had seen on the internet and was fascinated by, but not many tourists had in their plans. Part of the reason why Ban Gioc is off the beaten path is its distance from Hanoi (330KM roughly). I took a bus to Cao Bang, which given some delays, reached late evening and then I took a taxi to cover the last 80KM to my homestay at the Ban Gioc Waterfall. Based on the Quay Son river, Ban Gioc Waterfall is a 30 meter high and 300 meters wide waterfall. What makes it interesting (apart from its stunning beauty), is that it's right on the Vietnam-China border. I wonder why the major waterfalls in the world are on borders ... read more

Although the taxi ride to the airport in Hong Kong, China was an hour or so, the check-in process was smooth as silk, and, while I was enjoying a cup of coffee, I was entertained by a robot that delivered cocktails from the bar to the servers at a lounge across from the bar. The flight from Hong Kong to Seoul, South Korea was uneventful, and the seats between my aisle seat and the "window" seat were unoccupied. The passenger across the aisle from me, a man from Northern Ireland who had now been living in Hong Kong for eight years, also had two empty seats between him and the window. This was not unusual for many flights, but this flight seemed to be about 95% of capacity. I suppose most of the passengers were travelling ... read more

Asia » Japan » Okinawa March 8th 2024

After the great experiences of South Korea and Taiwan, it was time to head for our main destination when we first started planning our voyage…..Japan. There are so many considerations when you have the luxury of some three and a half weeks in a single nation, so where do you begin? A country with some 150 million inhabitants crammed on an island where roughly three-quarters of the terrain is mountainous, this is one populous country. With a little research, we ended up on the island of Okinawa, the southernmost and westernmost part of Japan. Part of the strategy was that it was technically still winter and perhaps we would find more forgiving climes here….and we were right. We are always happy when we get off the plane and see palm trees. We flew on Peach Airlines ... read more
