I love Tokyo. If I had to eat only in one city for the rest of my life, Tokyo would be it. Most chefs I know would agree with me. Anthony Bourdain. We’ve all seen photos of Tokyo, but until you are there you cannot imagine the enormity of this city. Dave refers to this as his “Grand Canyon Theory.” You can tell people how big it is, show them pictures of how big it is, but until you actually put your eyes on it, you do not realize just how big it really is. To start with, Japan is roughly the size of California and has a population of 125 million. Thirty-eight million of those people live in the greater Tokyo area. It’s the largest metropolitan area in the world. Need more perspective? The next ... read more

Last October my father was very sick after he got Covid while recovering from surgery. He was not expected to live so the whole family gathered and we were ready to say goodbye to him. Fortunately, he got better and went back home. I had the chance to catch up with my nephew Kevin who is now living in Sweden. At age 11, he was a nice bubbly boy and he was very different to the boy I saw years ago when he was growing up. It was a great chance for my family reunion. Kevin and his parents, however, couldn't go back to Hanoi for Tết this year as my sister is waiting for her residence visa. Tết (Vietnamese Lunar New Year - 9 to 13 February) is the biggest event of the year for ... read more

We arrived in Singapore on Monday after 2 days at sea. We had planned to go to Sentosa Island as I had not been there. We went to disembark at 10am but the queue to get off was very long so we returned to the cabin and tried again at 11am. This time the queue was even longer. We had a drink in the bar until the worst was over and joined the line at about 11-45. From there it took us 2 hours to make it through Immigration. What a waste of time. The captain said later he had written a letter of protest about it. When we finally emerged at nearly 2pm we bought tickets for the cable car. Fortunately it was only a short walk to the cable car station. We had a ... read more

Yesterday was the first double training day, and it sure feels like it today. I was feeling the leg cramps after the session yesterday, and that feeling made itself know again last night. After about an hour of sleep, I had the worst thigh cramps I’ve ever had. Almost made me cry. It was one leg followed immediately by the other. I staggered around the room for about 10 minutes until they subsided. I grabbed some water, added some electrolytes, and drank it all and hoped for some serious sleep. Guess I am still in the jet lag area because I woke up for good around 1:30 am. Tried to be productive and even tried to go back to sleep around 4, but no luck. Maybe an afternoon nap will be on the agenda. I may ... read more

This writing is taking place at the standard cafe at the Ambassador, looking out at the Bird Oasis. Funnily (not a real word), I don’t see a bird anywhere. Plenty of fish in the water, and squirrels in the top fencing, but no birds. The last time here, this was being renovated. They even added a viewing area where you can walk out into the oasis. Maybe that why there are no birds. Uneventful travel this morning. The BTS was rather empty. Got to the gym just as Fahlaep was coming up the alley on his scooter. Started off with 6 laps around the block. Now I remember how the sweat flows. Eventhough the outside temperature was really comfortable, the humidity when running kicked in today. Fahlaep is still easing me into the workouts. He said ... read more

I forgot to mention earlier that when I came into the hotel Tuesday, the one bellhop from last visit came running over to me and greeted me like we were long lost friends. I remember him because I was having him help me with write something in Thai for Fahlaep’s birthday surprise on my last day of the previous trip. And today, the manager of the Espresso Cafe in the hotel, where I’ve been having lunch and writing, came up to me and greeted me. A little disappointing to find the Espresso Cafe doesn’t have the sandwiches I was getting last time, so I’m going to have to find other options for lunch. I’ll probably still go there for the icy beverage and typing environment. It also gives housekeeping a chance to clean, and it’s always ... read more

From Cat Ba Island, I headed to Trang An, which is close to Ninh Binh. Only 90KM from Hanoi and due to Hoa Lu ancient capital (first capital of Vietnam), Ninh Binh can feel touristy, as does it's real tourist cousin, Tam Coc. Avoiding those, I headed to Trang An, a small village with beautiful nature and small homestays. It's also known as as the "Ha Long Bay on land" for the karsts rising out of the river. My hostel was the most scenic place I have stayed at in this trip and I could immediately understand the charm of the place. During my walk through the village, I saw freshly planted rice fields, people going about their lives (very friendly and children always try their English with you) and just the slow pace and clean ... read more
